Finding A Way Out Of The Ethnographic Paradigm Jungle, Subhadip Roy, Pratyush Banerjee
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a hybrid ethnographic paradigm, taking the best points from the different approaches of ethnographic research. The pioneering proponents of ethnography differed in their conceptualization of the method, resulting in the development of three distinct schools of thought-holistic, semiotic and behavioristic. These three ethnographic paradigms have their respective benefits and shortcomings. Following any one of these approaches may lead to only partial comprehension of the phenomenon by the ethnographer. This study wished to address this issue by developing a best practice approach, which will have the virtues of all the three …

A Grounded Theory Of Connectivity And Persistence In A Limited Residency Doctoral Program, Steven R. Terrell, Martha M. Snyder, Laurie P. Dringus, Elizabeth Maddrey
The Qualitative Report
Limited-residency and online doctoral programs have an attrition rate significantly higher than traditional programs. This grounded-theory study focused on issues pertaining to communication between students, their peers and faculty and how interpersonal communication may affect persistence. Data were collected from 17 students actively working on their dissertation in a limited-residency educational technology program. The resultant theory indicated that students felt communication between themselves and peers is possible but not common. Students also indicated that dissertation supervisors are readily accessible but longer than expected response times may contribute to a lack of student success. The results suggest the development and effective …

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
State governments always want graduates who received higher education in universities and colleges to stimulate the economic growth of the state. Many state universities want to contribute more to the state’s economy as well, and state universities frequently have relevant economic development activities and offices. The state universities normally receive annual budgeted financial support and occasional special funding from the state government while the state expects contributions to the economic growth and an educated citizen in return. In this research, the economic impact of a graduate degree funded by the state government was considered in the state of Nebraska.

Development Of Natural Cyclic Peptide Inhibitors Of Xrcc4/Xlf Interaction For Radio-Sensitization Of Breast Tumor Cells, Mohaini Mohammed Al
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women according to the American Cancer Society. The standard treatment regimen for breast cancer involves ionizing radiation combined with surgery and chemotherapy. Ionizing radiation induces a complex signaling response in cells resulting in either growth arrest, senescence or cell death, and the cell killing after exposure to radiation results largely from DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). There are two main mechanisms in mammalian cells responsible for repairing the DSBs; the primary mechanism is non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) and the secondary mechanism is homologous recombination (HRR). Previous studies showed that breast …

A Physiological Signal Processing System For Optimal Engagement And Attention Detection., Ashwin Belle
Theses and Dissertations
In today’s high paced, hi-tech and high stress environment, with extended work hours, long to-do lists and neglected personal health, sleep deprivation has become common in modern culture. Coupled with these factors is the inherent repetitious and tedious nature of certain occupations and daily routines, which all add up to an undesirable fluctuation in individuals’ cognitive attention and capacity. Given certain critical professions, a momentary or prolonged lapse in attention level can be catastrophic and sometimes deadly. This research proposes to develop a real-time monitoring system which uses fundamental physiological signals such as the Electrocardiograph (ECG), to analyze and predict …

New Approach To Time Domain Classification Of Broadband Noise In Gravitational Wave Data, Soma Mukherjee, P. Rizwan, R. Biswas
Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Transient broadband noise in gravitational wave (GW) detectors-also known as noise triggers (referred to as triggers for brevity)-can often be a deterrant to the efficiency with which astrophysical search pipelines detect sources. It is important to understand their instrumental or environmental origin so that they could be eliminated or accounted for in the data. Since the number of triggers is large, data mining approaches such as clustering and classification are useful tools for this task. Classification of triggers based on a handful of discrete properties has been done in the past. A rich information content is available in the waveform …

Brand switching data frequently used in market structure analysis is adequate to analyze non- durable goods, because it can capture competition between specific two brands. But brand switching data sometimes can not be used to analyze goods like automobiles having long term duration because one of main assumptions that consumer preference toward brand attributes is not changed against time can be violated. Therefore a new type of data which can precisely capture competition among durable goods is needed. Another problem of using brand switching data collected from actual purchase behavior is short of explanation why consumers consider different set of …

Research Purpose Consumers rely on various clues to evaluate their decision to patronize a retail store, and store brand is one of them (Dodds 1991; Grewal et al. 1998). As consumers find ever increasing variety of contact points connecting them to specific store, the value of experiential shopping as a means of increasing store`s brand equity warrants greater attention from scholars of retail management. Retail shopping values are credited for creating not only cognitive experiences like brand knowledge but also emotional experiences such as shopping pleasure and pride (Schmitt 1999). This may be because today`s consumers place emphasis on emotional …

Today`s consumers perceive consumption as a representation of themselves. It is not simply an act that fulfills a consumer`s physical and practical needs. Even in terms of life quality, consumers increasingly want to achieve an emotional and sensible experience through consumption. Consumers now make decisions based on their need to express their position in relation to other people, pursue emotional satisfaction, and try to improve the quality of life. Culture-art products that meet such internal and external demands of consumers have made significant improvements in both quantity and quality, because of the social interest and policy support. The recognition of …

Companies recently introduce art collaborated products incorporating culture into a product. Art collaborated products include incorporating famous movies and/or design of an artist into a newly launched product. The introduction of art collaborated products are gradually increasing. However, research for this trend is relatively scarce. Although research concerning design has discussed a number of different factors as playing a role in influencing responses to design including culture, fashion, innate preferences, etc.), only limited attention has been paid to the processes by which consumers generate responses to product designs. * Ph. Experimental Investigation Of Pool Boiling Performance With Ethanol And Fc-87 On Open Microchannel Surfaces, Ankit Kalani
Theses
The growing trend in miniaturization of electronics has generated a need for efficient thermal management of these devices. Boiling has the ability to dissipate large quantity of heat while maintaining a small temperature difference. Vapor chamber with pool boiling offers an effective way to provide cooling and maintaining temperature uniformity. The objective of the current work is to investigate pool boiling performance of ethanol and FC - 87 on microchannel surfaces. Ethanol is an attractive working fluid due to its better heat transfer performance and higher heat of vaporization compared to refrigerants, and lower boiling point compared to water. The …

Analysis Of The Environmental Impact On Remanufacturing Wind Turbines, Manuel Sosa Skrainka
Theses
To deliver clean energy the use of wind turbines is essential. In June 2011 there was an installed wind capacity equivalent to 211,000MW world-wide (WWEA, 2011). By the end of the year 2009 the U.S. had 35,100MW of wind energy installed capacity to generate electricity (AWEA, 2010). This industry has grown in recent years and is expected to grow even more in the future. The environmental impacts that will arise from the increased number of wind turbines and their end-of-life should be addressed, as large amounts of resources will be required to satisfy the current and future market demands for …

With their first production implemented around 1960’s, lasers have afterwards proven to be excellent light sources in building the technology. Subsequently, it has been shown that the extraordinary properties of lasers are related to their coherence properties. Recent developments in optics make it possible to synthesize partially coherent light beams from fully coherent ones. In the last several decades it was seen that using partially coherent light sources may be advantageous, in the areas such as laser surface processing, fiber and free-space optical communications, and medical diagnostics. In this thesis, I study extensively the generation, the propagation in different media, …

Numerical Analysis Of Phase Change Material For Energy Storage System / Wan Khairul Muzammil Abdul Rahim, Abdul Rahim Wan Khairul Muzammil
Student Works (2010-2019)
A numerical method based on the effective heat capacity method was studied to solve the phase change heat transfer problems of a phase change material in a cylindrical latent heat thermal energy storage device during the charging (melting) process of the material. The commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics was employed to run the numerical simulations. The effective heat capacity method was used to characterize the fusion heat of melting of the phase change material and the moving boundary of solid-liquid interface. An analytical tool was used to validate the phase change heat transfer process in which the results show a good …

The Design And Testing Of A Power Augmented Wind Turbine System For Urban High Rise Application / Pan Kok Chen, Kok Chen Pan
Student Works (2010-2019)
The utilization of renewable energy such as wind energy and solar energy is receiving great attention due to the elevated price of fossil fuels in the international market as well as adverse environmental problems from the process of power generation. On-site generation is becoming more widespread for dwelling places, for example, photovoltaic panels, micro- CHP (Combined Heat and Power) and micro-wind. For on-site generation, building integrated wind turbines and solar energy systems serve as attractive opportunities. Retrofitting high-rise building would be a feasible choice for on-site wind turbine integration since no huge capital investment is involved. However, urban areas generally …

Hydrologic Evaluation Of Established Rain Gardens In Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew R. Anderson, Thomas G. Franti, David P. Shelton
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Increased urbanization has resulted in water quality and flooding problems for many receiving waters in the United States. Rain gardens are one type of best management practice commonly used in low impact development (LID). Many studies have evaluated large engineered bioretention cells in research settings. There is little information on the effectiveness of homeowner-maintained rain gardens that rely on deep percolation as the method for water exfiltration. Repeatable controlled experiments are very rare in hydrologic studies due to the inherent variability of weather data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hydrologic properties of twelve established rain gardens …
A Molecular Rheostat Coupling Cell Size To Nutrient Availability In Bacteria, Anchun Chien
A Molecular Rheostat Coupling Cell Size To Nutrient Availability In Bacteria, Anchun Chien
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Cell size control is of universal importance to all organisms. Regulation of cell size ensures that cells are of the appropriate size for a given growth condition or developmental fate. Nutrient availability is a primary determinant of cell size in bacteria. Bacterial cells, including the Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and the Gram-negative Escherichia coli increase size in a nutrient-dependent manner. Cells cultured in nutrient-rich medium can be up to twice the size of their counterparts cultured in nutrient-poor medium, suggesting that bacteria have ways of sensing nutrient availability and transmitting this information to the division machinery.
This dissertation first examines the …
