The Consumption Of Dha During Embryogenesis As An Indicative Of The Need To Supply Dha During Early Larval Development: A Review, Joana Figueiredo, Junda Lin, Justin Anto, Luis Narciso

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

The establishment of an adequate larval diet for crustacean and fish often involves a series of time-consuming and expensive trial and errors. Despite being nutritionally poor, rotifers and Artemia are the most commonly used preys in larviculture. Whether (and to what extent) the prey needs to be enriched with essential fatty acids differs from species to species. We hypothesized that the DHA content of a newly spawned eggs and its consumption through embryogenesis can be a good indicator of the need to enrich the prey with DHA. In order to assess this hypothesis, we performed a search in the scientifc …

Investigation Of Enhancement Of Furosemide Solubilization With Cyclodextrins And A Novel Octenyl Succinate Anhydride Starch, Rui Zhu

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Solubility behavior is one of the most challenging aspects for drug commercialization and often the main reason of drug that do not reach to its full potential. Now nearly 60% new chemical entities possess solubility problems, whereas practically no drug products with less than 10 µg/ml solubility in 70’s or 80’s. There is an ever increasing need to develop new formulation techniques and exicipients with novel mechanisms of action. Various techniques have been applied to enhance the drug solubility such as co-solvents, particle size reduction, lipid based drug delivery systems, nanosuspension, use of surfactants, salt formation, cyclodextrin complexes and solid …

The research approach adopted in this dissertation was a mixed methods approach; therefore, quantitative analysis was utilized during a statistical comparison of secondary schools in Missouri and a review of trends from a survey distributed to all secondary school principals in …

Against All Odds: Relations Between Nato And The Mena Region, Florence Gaub Dr. Aug 2012

Against All Odds: Relations Between Nato And The Mena Region, Florence Gaub Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

While NATO was created with a primary outlook to the East, its Southern rim was neglected strategically until the end of the Cold War. Since then, the Alliance has undertaken a number of efforts to build strategic relationships with the Middle East and North Africa, recognizing the region’s importance for Allied security. However, looming obstacles may well interfer with NATO's efforts to enhance relations with the region. Geostrategic realities are not in NATO’s favor: it is a region of crisis; suspicious of the West in general; riddled with internal instability; and is a difficult to build ties with. This monograph …

2012-13 Key Strategic Issues List, Antulio J. Echevarria Ii

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Update No. 1 and Update No. 2 to the KSIL are now available with additional topics.

Unlike other lists that generally reflect issues which are operational or tactical in nature, the focus of the Key Strategic Issues List is strategic. The spotlight is, in other words, on those items that senior Army and Department of Defense leaders should consider in providing military advice and formulating military strategy. At present, the U.S. military is engaged in a changing situation in Iraq and an increasing presence in Afghanistan, as well as efforts to restore balance in force sizing and structure.

Culture, Identity, And Information Technology In The 21st Century: Implications For U.S. National Security, Pauline Kusiak Dr. Aug 2012

Culture, Identity, And Information Technology In The 21st Century: Implications For U.S. National Security, Pauline Kusiak Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

While it is impossible to predict the values and beliefs of future generations, a modest forecast is made by tracing global trends in the use of language and media, as well as in the use of information and communication technologies. The potential implications of these culture and identity trends for the strength of the U.S. “signal” in the global info-communication sphere are analyzed. The author suggests that the information that will dominate the 21st century, particularly the beliefs and values of foreign societies, may increasingly and more directly impact our own national security, making it ever more critical for policymakers …

Tribiology Of Engineered Surfaces In Aggressive Environments, Nathan Phillip Mitchell

All Theses

To improve the performance of sliding systems, surface modifications and coatings are often applied to opposing surfaces. This thesis focuses on characterizing two tribo-systems (DLC-DLC and steel micropatterns-flat) under their predicted application environments. The first section is focused on friction testing of micropatterned surfaces for orthopaedic device design, the second section elucidates how the sliding of diamond-like-carbon (DLC) coatings changes with temperature and humidity. The experimental design and major results of these sections are as follows.

(1) The use of micropatterning to create uniform surface morphologies has been cited as yielding improvements in the coefficient of friction during high velocity …

L. solanacearum), the putative causal agent of zebra chip (ZC) disease in potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.), were sampled in commercial potato fields and untreated control plots for 3 yr in multiple locations in Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. Populations of the potato psyllid varied across years and across potato growing regions. However, the percentage of potato psyllids infected with Ca. L. solanacearum although variable across years, was consistently highest in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas (LRGV), the reported overwintering …

Palantir: Early Detection Of Development Conflicts Arising From Parallel Code Changes, Anita Sarma, D F. Redmiles, Andre Van Der Hoek Aug 2012

Palantir: Early Detection Of Development Conflicts Arising From Parallel Code Changes, Anita Sarma, D F. Redmiles, Andre Van Der Hoek

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

The earlier a conflict is detected, the easier it is to resolve—this is the main precept of workspace awareness. Workspace awareness seeks to provide users with information of relevant ongoing parallel changes occurring in private workspaces, thereby enabling the early detection and resolution of potential conflicts. The key approach is to unobtrusively inform developers of potential conflicts arising because of concurrent changes to the same file and dependency violations in ongoing parallel work. This paper describes our research goals, approach, and implementation of workspace awareness through Palantır and includes a comprehensive evaluation involving two laboratory experiments. We present both quantitative …

Melanopsin Mediates Retrograde Visual Signaling In The Retina, Dao-Qi Zhang, Michael A. Belenky, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Douglas G. Mcmahon Aug 2012

Melanopsin Mediates Retrograde Visual Signaling In The Retina, Dao-Qi Zhang, Michael A. Belenky, Patricia J. Sollars, Gary E. Pickard, Douglas G. Mcmahon

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The canonical flow of visual signals proceeds from outer to inner retina (photoreceptors→bipolar cells→ganglion cells). However, melanopsin-expressing ganglion cells are photosensitive and functional sustained light signaling to retinal dopaminergic interneurons persists in the absence of rods and cones. Here we show that the sustained-type light response of retinal dopamine neurons requires melanopsin and that the response is mediated by AMPA-type glutamate receptors, defining a retrograde retinal visual signaling pathway that fully reverses the usual flow of light signals in retinal circuits.

Quorum Sensing And Other Aspects Of The Biology Of Candida Albicans, Kenneth W. Nickerson Aug 2012

Quorum Sensing And Other Aspects Of The Biology Of Candida Albicans, Kenneth W. Nickerson

Kenneth Nickerson Papers

Most dimorphic fungi exhibit cell density dependent effects in that they grow as yeasts when inoculated at > 106 cells per ml and as mycelia when inoculated at < 106 cells per ml. For Candida albicans, we discovered (2001) that this phenomenon (quorum sensing) is due to the production and secretion of the C15 isoprenoid trans-trans farnesol. Since then, we found that C. albicans cells treated with sublethal levels of zaragozic acid (2003) or fluconazole (2004) produced 10-40X more farnesol and that these fluconazole treated cells were ca. 5X more toxic to mice following tail vein injection. This suggestion …
