Executive Compensation And Horizon Incentives: An Empirical Investigation Of Corporate Cash Payout, Sheng Huang Aug 2012

Executive Compensation And Horizon Incentives: An Empirical Investigation Of Corporate Cash Payout, Sheng Huang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The recent financial crisis has renewed the interest in executives’ compensation-related horizon incentives. This paper examines how the short-termism in CEO compensation affects corporate cash payout through share repurchases using a new measure of compensation horizon incentive. In contrast to the conventional wisdom that firms buy back shares after poor stock performance, we find that CEOs with short compensation horizons are more likely to buy back shares after good performance. To bolster already high stock price, they have incentives to repurchase to boost up reported EPS towards analysts’ expectations, and to cater to investors with short investment horizons. This short-termism …

Characterization Of Binding And Fusion Efficiencies Mediated By The V1–V5 Env Derived From Transmitted And Non-Transmitted Viruses Isolated From A Perinatal Transmission Cohort From Zambia, Mackenzie Waltke

School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) is the etiological agent of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), which affects over 34 million people worldwide. In sub-Saharan Africa where access to antiretroviral therapies (ART) is limited, mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) rates remain high and represent a major concern in the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Little is known about the biological properties of viruses that are transmitted perinatally, including how the biological functions of envelope (Env) influence transmissibility. Previously, transmitted viruses were found to have an advantage in replicative fitness mediated by Env V1-V5. In this study viruses derived from transmitting mother infant pairs (MIPs) were …

Mistaken Identity, Identity Theft And Problems Of Remote Authentication In E-Commerce, Eliza Mik Aug 2012

Mistaken Identity, Identity Theft And Problems Of Remote Authentication In E-Commerce, Eliza Mik

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The problem of mistaken identity in e-commerce transactions brings together seemingly unrelated issues: privacy, network security, digital signatures – and classic contract law. The technological characteristics of the Internet have a tendency to turn traditional legal doctrines on their head, or, at least expose flaws in existing legal arguments. Combining an academic exercise with the practical implications of the insecurity of the Internet, this paper draws some unexpected conclusions regarding cases of mistaken identity. The latter must be analysed afresh with a number of factors in mind: the more widespread use of fictitious identities in on-line transactions, the higher incidence …

Creating Access To Quality Legal Representation – The Queen's Counsel (Re)Appears In Singapore, Kwan Ho Lau Aug 2012

Creating Access To Quality Legal Representation – The Queen's Counsel (Re)Appears In Singapore, Kwan Ho Lau

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Litigants coming up against a large banking institution or corporation in Singapore have not always been able to procure quality legal representation. The larger law firms there, with their established dispute resolution practices and stables of Senior Counsel, are often unable or unwilling to act in litigation against their institutional clients. This article investigates the extent of the problem and the Ministry of Law’s soluion of easing the criteria for ad hoc admission of Queen’s Counsel in Singapore. The author then looks, in some detail, at the factors that a court might consider in any foreign lawyer’s application for admission. …

The Sustainability Of Reading Recovery Intervention On Reading Achievement Of Students Identified As At-Risk For Early Reading Failure, Anne J. Harley Aug 2012

The Sustainability Of Reading Recovery Intervention On Reading Achievement Of Students Identified As At-Risk For Early Reading Failure, Anne J. Harley

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact and sustainability of successfully discontinued first grade Reading Recovery students as compared to non-Reading Recovery students in reading achievement measures as third graders. Schools are facing the unprecedented challenge to ensure reading success for all students by the end of second grade, regardless of the various strengths and challenges each individual child brings to school. Therefore, it is imperative that the chosen interventions truly do close the achievement gap and that the results sustain over time. This study may offer insight into the best use of available funding for at-risk …

A Semantic Approach For Keyword Search On Relational Databases, Rajvardhan Patil Aug 2012

A Semantic Approach For Keyword Search On Relational Databases, Rajvardhan Patil

Student Work

Today’s search engines make it easier for the user to browse and query the online available data. But when it comes to structured data, the queries have to be structured too, in order to retrieve the data. This makes it difficult for novice users, with no knowledge of the underlying schema or query language, to access the relational data. Therefore, to query the structured data in an unstructured language of web, there is a need to map the user keyword queries to their equivalent SQL format. This research is intended to bridge the gap by introducing a framework named STRUCT. …

Understanding The Adaptive Use Of Virtual World Technology Capabilities And Trust In Virtual Teams, Dawn Owens Aug 2012

Understanding The Adaptive Use Of Virtual World Technology Capabilities And Trust In Virtual Teams, Dawn Owens

Student Work

In an environment of global competition and constant technological change, the use of virtual teams has become commonplace for many organizations. Virtual team members are geographically and temporally dispersed, experience cultural diversity, and lack shared social context and face-to-face encounters considered as irreplaceable for building and maintaining trust. Previous research has established that higher trusting teams have better cooperation and experience improved outcomes; however, trust building in a team where members are from different backgrounds, time zones and cultures is a considerable challenge. Virtual teams (VTs) rely heavily on technology to facilitate coordination, communication, and control in the team. One …

Chemistry Faculty Research

The polyanionic nature of oligonucleotides and their enzymatic degradation present challenges for the use of siRNA in research and therapy; among the most notable of these is clinically relevant delivery into cells. To address this problem, we designed and synthesized the first members of a new class of guanidinium-rich amphipathic oligocarbonates that noncovalently complex, deliver, and release siRNA in cells, resulting in robust knockdown of target protein synthesis in vitro as determined using a dual-reporter system. The organocatalytic oligomerization used to synthesize these co-oligomers is step-economical and broadly tunable, affording an exceptionally quick strategy to explore chemical space for optimal …

Assessment Of The Role Of Solute Carrier Drug Transporters In The Systemic Disposition Of Fluoroquinolones: An In Vitro - In Vivo Comparison, Aditi Mulgaonkar Aug 2012

Assessment Of The Role Of Solute Carrier Drug Transporters In The Systemic Disposition Of Fluoroquinolones: An In Vitro - In Vivo Comparison, Aditi Mulgaonkar

Theses and Dissertations

Fluoroquinolones (FQ) are broad-spectrum charged antimicrobials exhibiting excellent tissue/fluid permeation. Thus, FQ disposition depends essentially on active transport and facilitative diffusion. Although most early transporter studies investigating renal elimination of FQs have focused on apical efflux of FQs from renal proximal tubule cell (RPTC) into urine, their basolateral uptake mechanism(s) from blood into RPTC (i.e., first step to tubular secretion) has not yet been explored in detail. Renally expressed SLC22 members: organic anion (OATs) and cation (OCTs) transporters are known to transport such small organic ionic substrates (molecular weight ~400 Da). Hence it is of interest to explore the role …

The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani Aug 2012

The Geographical Dimension Of The Development Effects Of Natural Resources, Abdur Chowdhury, Fabrizio Carmignani

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

We study the contribution of natural resource intensity to long-term development along different dimensions: per-capita income, institutional quality, and education. We allow natural resources to affect these dimensions differently in different regions of the world. The evidence suggests that natural resources are generally a positive driver of development, but in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) their contribution is almost negligible, if not even negative. We explain these cross-regional differences with the fact that in SSA more than anywhere else large resource endowments are combined with a particularly bad disease environment. Some historical evidence and formal econometric results support this hypothesis.

In this pilot study, only five participants were tested; non-significant results of the analysis were anticipated; however, as oxygen levels decreased and time of …

Identifying Signatures Of Plasma Waves And Reconnection Associated With Kelvin-Helmholtz Activity, Thomas Wesley Moore Aug 2012

Identifying Signatures Of Plasma Waves And Reconnection Associated With Kelvin-Helmholtz Activity, Thomas Wesley Moore

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

The magnetopause marks the boundary between the shocked solar wind and magnetospheric plasma. Understanding the dynamics of the plasma processes at the magnetopause boundary is crucial to the study of plasma transport into the magnetosphere. Previous studies have shown that there exists a temperature asymmetry in the plasma sheet. During northward IMF, the cold component ions are 30-40% hotter in the dawn flank plasma sheet compared to the dusk flank. However, the mechanisms responsible are still not entirely clear. Recent work has shown that reconnection in Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices can transport plasma into the magnetosphere. Previous studies have also shown that …

Experiences With Social Services Among Homeless Lgbtq Young Adults, Fallon Kadel Aug 2012

Experiences With Social Services Among Homeless Lgbtq Young Adults, Fallon Kadel

HIM 1990-2015

My findings imply that homeless LGBTQ young adults are very limited in where they can go to find LGBTQ-accepting services. Even though all the shelters that were interviewed claimed they did not discriminate against LGBTQ persons, they do not provide and are not affiliated with services or programs that are considered to be LGBTQ- accepting. Based on the research, shelters would rather have clients conform to their pre-existing structure rather than the shelters conforming to the specific needs of the clients.; The goal of this research is to explore what programs and services are being provided at various homeless shelters …

Dissolute Pluralism: An Ethics Of Queer Thought, Kristin P. Mccartney Aug 2012

Dissolute Pluralism: An Ethics Of Queer Thought, Kristin P. Mccartney

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Every practice has a theory, but multiracial queer social movements have centered theory in their praxis. In consciousness-raising and affinity groups, listservs and electronic forums, zines and community action research projects, participants frame the task of thought itself as collective and interactive, subject not just to evolving norms, but also to vicissitudes of duration, location, and timing, medium, ritual, and personality. I argue that the ephemeral character of these interventions is not incidental or regrettable, but designed to encourage organic participation and obstruct institutional codification. In turn, these values and tactics call academics to interrogate how they enter into this …

The Idea Of Mimesis: Semblance, Play, And Critique In The Works Of Walter Benjamin And Theodor W. Adorno, Joseph Weiss Aug 2012

The Idea Of Mimesis: Semblance, Play, And Critique In The Works Of Walter Benjamin And Theodor W. Adorno, Joseph Weiss

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Critical Theory demands that its forms of critique express resistance to the socially necessary illusions of a given historical period. Yet theorists have seldom discussed just how much it is the case that, for Walter Benjamin and Theodor W. Adorno, the concepts and language it employs, as well as the aesthetic comportment it would champion for the sake of generating a critical distance from these illusions, require an understanding of the mimetic faculty. The point of departure for this work is thus an attempt to delineate both the essential and the historical features of this faculty, in the hope of …
