Correlation Of Trpgly And Glytrp Rotamer Structure With W7 And W10 Uv Resonance Raman Modes And Fluorescence Emission Shifts, Azaria Solomon Eisenberg, Laura J. Juszczak Jul 2012

Correlation Of Trpgly And Glytrp Rotamer Structure With W7 And W10 Uv Resonance Raman Modes And Fluorescence Emission Shifts, Azaria Solomon Eisenberg, Laura J. Juszczak

Publications and Research

Tryptophyl glycine (TrpGly) and glycyl tryptophan (GlyTrp) dipeptides at pH 5.5 and pH 9.3 show a pattern of fluorescence emission shifts with the TrpGly zwitterion emission solely blue shifted. This pattern is matched by shifts in the UV resonance Raman (UVRR) W10 band position and the W7 Fermi doublet band ratio. Ab initio calculations show that the 1340 cm−1 band of the W7 doublet is composed of three modes, two of which determine the W7 band ratios for the dipeptides. Molecular dynamics simulations show that the dipeptides take on two conformations: one with the peptide backbone extended; one with the …

When Damage Is Constructive: Interactions Of Hurricane Damage Levels With Disturbance-Based Forests, Katherine Elise Correll Jul 2012

When Damage Is Constructive: Interactions Of Hurricane Damage Levels With Disturbance-Based Forests, Katherine Elise Correll

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Southern pine forests thrive on disturbance to remain in sub-climax species composition. Wind disturbance can affect both the health and species composition of forest vegetation and may force forests back to the sub-climax stage if the effects of hurricanes are managed properly. This work explores hurricane impacts on forest health. Post-hurricane change is classified by measuring two components of forest health and then assigning an outcome class based on the components. The components are vegetation health (NDVI) and forest composition. Using Landsat imagery to quantify baseline values, change is recorded for storms of different intensities. Findings classify storms as having …

What Happens When Therapists Are More Directive? Correlating Directiveness With Psychotherapy Process And Outcome, Henry You-Chee Hua Jul 2012

What Happens When Therapists Are More Directive? Correlating Directiveness With Psychotherapy Process And Outcome, Henry You-Chee Hua

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study examined the relationship between therapist directiveness and the process and outcome of psychotherapy. Fifty-two therapy sessions were coded for turn-by-turn therapist directiveness, client compliance, and overall perceived therapist directiveness. These scores were compared to ratings of therapy process and outcome, reported by clients after the session. Additional analyses controlled for client compliance, pretreatment problem severity, and the interaction of directiveness with compliance. This study found no support for directiveness having any reliable relationship with the process or outcome of psychotherapy. Possible improvements are offered for future research on this topic.

Seasonal Regulation Of Reproduction: Mechanisms Regulating The Rfamides, Kisspeptin And Gonadotropin Inhibitory Hormone In Siberian Hamsters, Jerad Richard Henson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Siberian hamsters exhibit seasonal rhythms in reproductive driven by melatonin secretion. Tissues that mediate Mel-dependent alterations in reproduction include the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and the nucleus reuniens (NRe). Several neuroendocrine factors are implicated in the control of reproduction by melatonin, including two RFamides, kisspeptin and gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone (GnIH), as well as triiodothyronine (T3). Melatonin implants localized to the SCN or NRe tested the hypothesis that separate melatonin target tissues regulate RFamide expression. We also hypothesized that T3 and the RFamides are part of a single circuit. The results of chapter 2 indicate that melatonin acting at the SCN reduces the …

After accounting for the variance, significance wa strengthened (p = 0.006) for the overall effect. When …

The Collapse Behavior Of Compacted West Tennessee Loess, Duncan Blake Adrian Jul 2012

The Collapse Behavior Of Compacted West Tennessee Loess, Duncan Blake Adrian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This thesis is an investigation of the collapse behavior of two types of compacted loessial soil. Different stress paths will be followed to define the collapse behavior due to changes in net vertical stress and matric suction for loess specimens acquired from two locations in West Tennessee. The two loessial soils chosen have different grain size distributions, which result in differences in soil structure which should impact the collapsibility of the soil. The soil-water characteristic curve will be measured for the soils in the non-collapsed and collapsed conditions. The volume change behavior will be evaluated using results of collapse tests, …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Multifunctional Chitosan Microspheres And Their Incorporation Into Composite Scaffolds For Enhanced Bone Regeneration, Benjamin Taylor Reves

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Insufficient fracture healing affects hundreds of thousands of people every year in the United States, resulting in devestating economic and social impacts. To treat these severe fractures, our laboratory has developed chitosan-nano-hydroxyapatite microspheres and scaffolds. The purpose of this research was to improve these scaffolds by increasing their degradation rate to allow better bone ingrowth and to increase and extend the elution of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) from the constructs. We hypothesized that a composite approach combining chitosan and carboxymethylchitosan microspheres would result in scaffolds with improved degradation and elution properties while maintaining good cytocompatibility and sufficient mechanical properties. The …

Poster presented at: 8th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in Toronto, Canada.

Introduction:

Rats are frequently utilized for both research and training related to reconstructive head and neck surgery. The femoral neurovascular complex represents a useful mode for microvascular anastomosis, both for the purposes of testing adjuncts designed to improve anastomotic patency rates, as well as for residents and students to gain experience in microvascular surgery outside the operating room. Additionally, the rat proves useful in investigations examining the survivability of both random and axial pattern skin flaps.
