Poly(3,4-Ethylenedioxy-Thiophene):Poly(Styrenesulfonate)(Pedot:Pss) As A Hole-Transporting/Electron-Blocking Interfacial Layer To Increase The Efficiency Of Polymer Bulk-Heterojunction Solar Cells, Yanyu Wu, Michael D. Irwin

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

Solar energy is playing a critical role in today’s renewable energy resources. Polymer bulk-heterojunction solar cells have the possibility to be cost-effective and highly efficient. However, the technology is fairly new and has not yet been perfected. Therefore, In order to enhance the efficiency of polymer bulk-heterojunction solar cells, thin layers of Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate)(PEDOT:PSS) are inserted between the active organic layer, poly(3-hexylthiophene)(P3HT)+[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester(PCBM), and the ITO(tin-doped indium oxide) anode of bulk-heterojunction ITO/P3HT:PCBM/LiF /Al solar cells. Both the interfacial layer, which is PEDOT: PSS, and the active layer are deposited by spin-coating. So far, I have been able to …

Cope, Cooperate, Combat: Civilian Responses To Union Occupation In Saline County, Missouri, During The Civil War, Elle Harvell

History Theses

The Union occupation of Saline County, Missouri, during the Civil War brought many challenges to the civilian population. Civilians responded to the federal presence in a variety of ways: a few citizens coped with the situation, most cooperated in the face of an immediate threat, and others combated the federal incursion ruthlessly. A violent cycle of resistance and retaliation erupted between the pro-Confederate civilians and guerillas and the federals. Federal attempts to punish the Confederate enemy and to stabilize society encouraged more resistance. Faced with increasing defiance, the Union hardened policies. The presence of two rival forces in the county …

Evolution Of Growth Habit, Inflorescence Architecture, Flower Size, And Fruit Type In Rubiaceae: Its Ecological And Evolutionary Implications, Sylvain G. Razafimandimbison, Stefan Ekman, Timothy D. Mcdowell, Birgitta Bremer

ETSU Faculty Works

During angiosperm evolution, innovations in vegetative and reproductive organs have resulted in tremendous morphological diversity, which has played a crucial role in the ecological success of flowering plants. Morindeae (Rubiaceae) display considerable diversity in growth form, inflorescence architecture, flower size, and fruit type. Lianescent habit, head inflorescence, small flower, and multiple fruit are the predominant states, but arborescent habit, non-headed inflorescence, large flower, and simple fruit states occur in various genera. This makes Morindeae an ideal model for exploring the evolutionary appearances and transitions between the states of these characters. We reconstructed ancestral states for these four traits using a …

Value Of Bundled Recreation Amenities In Southern Arizona Communities: A Hedonic Pricing Approach, Eliza Ann Hoffman Jul 2012

Value Of Bundled Recreation Amenities In Southern Arizona Communities: A Hedonic Pricing Approach, Eliza Ann Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the contribution of family-recreation amenities to home valuation in Southern Arizona communities. Although recreation amenities have become a frequent addition to housing developments, little research exists regarding the value these amenities contribute to home valuation. The sample consisted of 600 homes in master-planned communities and 600 homes in comparable traditional subdivisions. Using the hedonic pricing method, this study examined whether the inclusion of recreation amenities provides additional value to homes after structural and locational characteristics were controlled for. Blocked multiple regression analyses were used to determine the contribution of both individual …

Microfinance As An Effective Development Solution: The Case Of Mongolia, Kjersten Adams Jul 2012

Microfinance As An Effective Development Solution: The Case Of Mongolia, Kjersten Adams

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Microfinance is increasingly looked at as a development solution for countries around the world. Its development and practice in former communist countries, however, has been relatively unexplored. This study seeks to fill this gap by asking how the practice and operation of microfinance in Mongolia compare to global best practices. Using global best practice frameworks regarding regulatory and organizational environments for microfinance, data gathered from surveys and onsite training observations at Xacbank is used to assess Mongolia's financial sector and its relative compliance to said practices. The analysis helps address the question of whether microfinance has helped or hindered Mongolian …

Canopy Effects On Tropical Leaf Litter Arthropods, Theodore Peter Sumnicht Jul 2012

Canopy Effects On Tropical Leaf Litter Arthropods, Theodore Peter Sumnicht

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in canopy structure, which are likely to occur at faster rates due to climate change, affect leaf litter structure and the ecology of litter-dwelling organisms. One such change is the increased abundance of lianas in tropical forest canopies. Here, I quantify effects of these changes on tropical leaf litter arthropod communities by surveying patches of Panamanian forest where lianas have been removed, and experimentally isolating two aspects of the litter environment affected by canopy structure: incident light and litter depth. Increased litter produced by liana cutting resulted in increases in ant species richness and arthropod abundance. Structural complexity was …

Canopy Ants Of Central Arkansas And The Atlantic Forest Of Brazil: Community Patterns, Petrus Fauaze Moreira Jul 2012

Canopy Ants Of Central Arkansas And The Atlantic Forest Of Brazil: Community Patterns, Petrus Fauaze Moreira

Theses and Dissertations

Ants in the forest canopy are of special ecological interest due to their high diversity and ecological importance in this relatively inaccessible system. I explored the ecology of ants of temperate and tropical arboreal settings in Central Arkansas and Brazil respectively. I tested the hypothesis that biotic (e.g., tree identity) and abiotic (e.g., spatial distribution) factors regulate the diversity and composition of ants in the forest canopy, as well as the potential conservation benefits of agroforests in the tropics. In Arkansas, tree identity influenced ant species richness in tree crowns, in Brazil, ant species richness was significantly different between primary …

The Journalistic Roles Of Arkansas Internment Camp Newspapers, 1942-45, Michael Guanella

Theses and Dissertations

The Japanese internment camps of World War II were small communities throughout the United States that utilized camp newspapers to distribute information to residents as any local newspaper. Under the unique operating circumstances, however, limitations were placed upon their operations. This thesis focuses on the Communique/The Denson Tribune and The Rohwer Outpost camp newspapers located at the Jerome and Rohwer, Arkansas internment camps respectively. These camp newspapers are evaluated based on their coverage in order to determine which roles of community, prison, and ethnic media were fulfilled, if any. After careful evaluation, the author argues that a limited number of …

Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of Flexible Inkjet-Printed Antennas, Yahiea M. H. Al-Naiemy Jul 2012

Design, Fabrication, And Testing Of Flexible Inkjet-Printed Antennas, Yahiea M. H. Al-Naiemy

Theses and Dissertations

During the past four decades, microstrip antennas have attracted much attention due to their thin profile, ease of fabrication, low cost, and conformability. Inkjet-printing flexible antennas using highly conducting patterns can complement and extend the above-mentioned advantages to achieve modern, clean, fast, and reliable antenna fabrication technologies. Moreover, the use of nanoscale materials allows for the development of a new generation of modern printed circuit antennas. In this thesis, several microstrip antennas are presented with different geometries on both rigid and flexible substrates. The antennas were designed and simulated using two different 3D full-wave electromagnetic simulation tools: Ansoft's High Frequency …

My Sister, Our Stories: Exploring The Lived Experience Of School Leavers Through Narrative And Poetics, C. Amelia Davis, Jennifer L. Pepperell

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to explore the educational experiences of two adult female siblings who are both school leavers. Through the use of thematic narrative analysis, sibling narratives and poetic re-presentations, their stories were developed. These stories represent the participants’ experiences of prior schooling and their current commitments to education. While each story conveyed a profound similarity in terms of prior schooling, contrasting narratives were illustrated through description of transitional moments and sibling relationship. The analysis also explored the intersections of race, gender, and social class within educative moments of the life experiences of the participants.
