Ethics (Eth Library Information Control System), Hannes Hug, Rudolf Noethiger

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The ETH-Bibliothek is not only the main library of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), but also the national center for scientific and technical literature and information. At the end of 1990 its complete holdings amounted to 4.5 million documents including 2 million microfiche and 11,000 current journa1s. In 1990 450,000 documents were lent (half being internal loans and half external loans, i.e. loans by mail). The ETH-Bibliothek supplies more documents and copies by mail than all other Swiss libraries combined. Among its external patrons are industrial companies, engineering offices, individuals and many local and foreign universities.

Controls Of Dissolved Organic Matter Distribution And Fate In The Ocean, Robert T. Letscher Jul 2012

Controls Of Dissolved Organic Matter Distribution And Fate In The Ocean, Robert T. Letscher

Open Access Dissertations

Marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) is quantitatively important for the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nitrogen. It exerts its influence through the ocean’s biological pump, with the fate of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and carbon (DOC) impacting the ocean’s fertility and its capacity for storing carbon on climate-relevant timescales, respectively. This dissertation identifies and quantifies important mechanisms and timescales for DOM degradation in the marine environment by combining observations from ship-based studies, assessments of ocean circulation, and incubation experiments to interrogate the relevant processes. The fate of terrigenous DOC (tDOC), delivered to the ocean by rivers, was investigated during its …

Intensive Production Of Millet And Sorghum For Evolving Markets In The Sahel, John H. Sanders, Botorou Ouendeba Jul 2012

Intensive Production Of Millet And Sorghum For Evolving Markets In The Sahel, John H. Sanders, Botorou Ouendeba

INTSORMIL Scientific Publications

One principal constraint to improving the performance of millet and sorghum systems is overcoming the conventional wisdom. The conventional wisdom has some or all of these characteristics depending upon where you hear it. “Sorghum and millet are subsistence crops.” “They do not respond to fertilization.” “Even if they do respond to fertilizer, it is not profitable.” “Farmers will not use fertilization on these crops even if there were agronomic and economic responses.” “Banks will not lend to farmers for sorghum and millet fertilization.”

Global Health Faculty Publications

Background

Elucidating the role of the underlying risk factors for severe outcomes of the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic could be crucial to define priority risk groups in resource-limited settings in future pandemics.

Methods

We use individual-level clinical data on a large series of ARI (acute respiratory infection) hospitalizations from a prospective surveillance system of the Mexican Social Security medical system to analyze clinical features at presentation, admission delays, selected comorbidities and receipt of seasonal vaccine on the risk of A/H1N1-related death. We considered ARI hospitalizations and inpatient-deaths, and recorded demographic, geographic, and medical information on individual patients during August-December, 2009. …

Identification Of Ebs1, Lsm6 And Nup159 As Suppressors Of Spt10 Effects At Adh2 In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Suggests Post-Transcriptional Defects Affect Mrna Synthesis, Bradley Anderson, Carrie Ann May, Clyde L. Denis Jul 2012

Denis

New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station Publications

Suppression of the effects of an spt10 mutation on ADH2 expression is a phenotype shared by a small number of genes whose protein products are either components of the CCR4-NOT complex required for mRNA deadenylation and degradation (CCR4, CAF1, NOT4) or have been shown to interact with the complex (DBF2, SRB9, SRB10). In this work, we conducted a screen for additional suppressors of spt10 at ADH2 to identify new factors related to CCR4 function. In addition to reisolating ccr4 and caf1 alleles, three previously unidentified suppressors …

Negative Bond Yields, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

During the Crash of 2008, a "flight to quality" drove yields to unprecedented low levels. In fact, many Treasuries were being issued with negative yields, meaning investors were paying the government to safely hold their money. Recently, with the crisis in Europe, German bonds have exhibited similar negative yields.

Sensitivity Studies Of A Low Temperature Low Approach Direct Cooling Tower For Building Radiant Cooling Systems, Medhi Nasrabadi, Donal Finn, Ben Costelloe Jul 2012

Sensitivity Studies Of A Low Temperature Low Approach Direct Cooling Tower For Building Radiant Cooling Systems, Medhi Nasrabadi, Donal Finn, Ben Costelloe

Conference Papers

Recent interest in cooling towers as a mechanism for producing chilled water, together with the evolution of radiant cooling, have prompted a review of evaporative cooling in temperate maritime climates. The thermal efficiency of such systems is a key parameter, as a measure of the degree to which the system has succeeded in exploiting the cooling potential of the ambient air. The feasibility of this concept depends largely however, on achieving low approach water temperatures within an appropriate cooling tower, at acceptable levels of energy performance. Previous experimental work for a full scale evaporative cooling system has shown that it …

Absolute Properties Of The Eclipsing Binary Star V335 Serpentis, Claud H. Sandberg Lacy, Francis C. Fekel, Antonio Claret

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

V335 Ser is now known to be an eccentric double-lined A1+A3 binary star with fairly deep (0.5 mag) partial eclipses. Previous studies of the system are improved with 7456 differential photometric observations from the URSA WebScope and 5666 from the NFO WebScope, and 67 high-resolution spectroscopic observations from the Tennessee State University 2 m automatic spectroscopic telescope. From dates of minima, the apsidal period is about 880 years. Accurate (better than 2%) masses and radii are determined from analysis of the two new light curves and the radial velocity curve. Theoretical models match the absolute properties of the stars at …

What Is The Outlook For Guyana's Oil Sector?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the Guyana-Suriname Basin could contain more than 15 billion barrels of oil as well as gas reserves of 42 trillion cubic feet. Guyana has awarded concessions to several major international oil companies as it seeks to exploit that potential, but oil has not yet been struck. What is the outlook for Guyana's oil sector? Does the country have the right regulatory environment in place to attract investment? Will the country's longstanding border dispute with Venezuela or current political gridlock affect the sector's development?
