Essays In Sports Economics, Daniel Mark Chin Jul 2012

Essays In Sports Economics, Daniel Mark Chin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The study of economics is based on key concepts such as incentives, efficiency, marginality and tradeoffs. Economic research has hypothesized and tested for how economic agents behave after taking each of these into account. In order for agents to meet their objectives it is sometimes the case that they intentionally keep their behaviors out of sight. However, economic theory can be used to search for patterns of observed behaviors from which the unobserved behaviors can be inferred. This dissertation performs this kind of analysis by observing the behavior of sports participants.

Chapter 1 is an application of Becker's (1968) economic …

Medical Devices Excise Tax (Mdet) — A Market-Specific Vat?, Richard Thompson Ainsworth, Andrew Shact, Gail Wasylyshyn Jul 2012

Medical Devices Excise Tax (Mdet) — A Market-Specific Vat?, Richard Thompson Ainsworth, Andrew Shact, Gail Wasylyshyn

Faculty Scholarship

VATs flourish in complex, clearly defined markets. New York discovered this when it converted its single-stage retail sales tax on hotel rooms, the Hotel Room Occupancy Tax (HROT), into a multi-stage European-style VAT. The HROT VAT-conversion demonstrates that (a) in a clearly defined market where (b) a single stage tax is imposed on (c) only part of a complex supply chain that (d) losses attributable to supply-chain-fragmentation can be remedied by moving to a multi-stage VAT.

The Medical Devices Excise Tax (MDET) imposes as 2.3% excise tax on the sale by manufacturers, producers or importers of clearly identified medical devises …

Mineral Chemistry Of Basalts Recovered From Hotspot Snake River Scientific Drilling Project, Idaho: Source And Crystallization Characteristics, Richard W. Bradshaw Jul 2012

Mineral Chemistry Of Basalts Recovered From Hotspot Snake River Scientific Drilling Project, Idaho: Source And Crystallization Characteristics, Richard W. Bradshaw

Theses and Dissertations

Mineral chemistry and petrography of basalts from the Kimama drill core recovered by Hotspot: Snake River Scientific Drilling Project, Idaho establish crystallization conditions of these lavas. Twenty-three basalt samples, from 20 individual lava flows were sampled from the upper 1000 m (of the 1912 m drilled) core drilled on the axis of the Snake River Plain, and represent approximately 3 m.y. of volcanism (rocks at the bottom of the hole are ~6 Ma). Rock from the upper 1000 m are typically fresh, while those lower in the core are more altered and are less likely to preserve fresh phenocrysts to …

Evaluating The Performance Of Computational Approaches For Identifying Critical Sites In Protein-Coding Dna Sequences, Matthew Lewis Bendall Jul 2012

Evaluating The Performance Of Computational Approaches For Identifying Critical Sites In Protein-Coding Dna Sequences, Matthew Lewis Bendall

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to link a particular phenotype to its causative genotype is one of the most challenging objectives for biological research. Although the genetic code provides an explicit formula for determining the sequence of amino acid phenotypes produced by a given nucleotide sequence, identifying specific residues that are functionally important remains problematic. Many computational approaches have been developed that use patterns observed in DNA sequences to identify these critical sites. However, very few research studies have used empirical data to test whether these approaches are truly able to identify sites of interest. In most empirical studies, the actual protein function and …

Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Study Of Protein Transport And Dynamic Interactions With Clustered-Charge Peptide Adsorbents, Lydia Kisley Jul 2012

Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Study Of Protein Transport And Dynamic Interactions With Clustered-Charge Peptide Adsorbents, Lydia Kisley

Faculty Scholarship

Ion-exchange chromatography relies on electrostatic interactions between the adsorbent and the adsorbate and is used extensively in protein purification. Conventional ion-exchange chromatography uses ligands that are singly charged and randomly dispersed over the adsorbent, creating a heterogeneous distribution of potential adsorption sites. Clustered-charge ion exchangers exhibit higher affinity, capacity, and selectivity than their dispersed-charge counterparts of the same total charge density. In the present work, we monitored the transport behavior of an anionic protein near clustered-charge adsorbent surfaces using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. We can resolve protein-free diffusion, hindered diffusion, and association with bare glass, agarose-coated, and agarose-clustered peptide surfaces, demonstrating …

Lesson 3: Operation Pedro Pan - How 14,000 Children Came To Live In America Without Their Parents, Alesha Looper, Daryl Saunders

Hispanic Heritage of Florida Conference 2012

Operation Pedro Pan was the name given to the 22-month clandestine program involving the political exodus of more than 14,000 Cuban children to the United States in the early 1960s. Fearing communist indoctrination and the rumor of patria potestad — the government assuming legal guardianship of their children— Cuban parents sent their unaccompanied (minor) children to the United States.

Accounting Ethics Education: A Comparison With Buddhist Ethics Education Framework, Otto H. Chang, Stanley W. Davis, Kent D. Kauffman Jul 2012

Accounting Ethics Education: A Comparison With Buddhist Ethics Education Framework, Otto H. Chang, Stanley W. Davis, Kent D. Kauffman

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Accounting educators such as Mintz and Mele have argued about the importance of virtues in moral behavior. Mele presented a conceptual model of moral behavior that integrated professional rules of conduct, moral values, and moral virtues. Moral virtues are defined as “permanent attitudes and interior strength for moral behavior.” A major shortcoming of the Mele’s model is that the model does not provide any discussion on the methodologies facilitating the cultivation of virtues. This paper describes the framework and process of Buddhist ethics education and compares the similarities and differences of the Buddhist ethics education framework with the mainstream accounting …

The Ccl2 Synthesis Inhibitor Bindarit Targets Cells Of The Neurovascular Unit, And Suppresses Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis, Shujun Ge, Bandana Shrestha, Debayon Paul, Robert E. Cone, Joel S. Pachter

UCHC Articles - Research

Background

Production of the chemokine CCL2 by cells of the neurovascular unit (NVU) drives critical aspects of neuroinflammation. Suppression of CCL2 therefore holds promise in treating neuroinflammatory disease. Accordingly, we sought to determine if the compound bindarit, which inhibits CCL2 synthesis, could repress the three NVU sources of CCL2 most commonly reported in neuroinflammation – astrocytes, microglia and brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMEC) – as well as modify the clinical course of neuroinflammatory disease.

Methods

The effect of bindarit on CCL2 expression by cultured murine astrocytes, microglia and BMEC was examined by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRTPCR). Bindarit …

Drafting Model Laws on Indoor Pollution for Developing and Developed Nations (July 12-13)

On July 12 and 13, 2012, experts convened at Colorado Law to demonstrate the extent to which a model law could help address the global problem of indoor air pollution from inefficient cook stoves. The air pollution that results from inefficiently burning biomass as fuel for cooking has serious health and climatic consequences. The workshop produced two sets of Model Laws and commentaries to help nations solve the problem, and the commentaries were published in the Colorado Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law Review.

English Language Teaching Using The Whole Student Philosophy, Tahira Y. Muhammad Jul 2012

English Language Teaching Using The Whole Student Philosophy, Tahira Y. Muhammad

MA TESOL Collection

Education in Kuwait is centered on rote learning methodology. Historically, the Kuwait educational system was created to mimic the Egyptian rote learning systems that date back to Pharaonic times. Furthermore, Kuwaiti educators are convinced that rote learning is the optimal form of education. In this paper, I will attempt to prove that this method is unsuccessful, and that educators, within their classroom and lesson planning, should adapt their teaching strategies to the adoption of the whole language philosophy.

The major limitation of this research is that the observer is also participant. However, the fact that the observer is fully trained …

Selling Fear = Making Money, Steven D. Dolvin Jul 2012

Selling Fear = Making Money, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Buying put options is commonly understood to provide a measure of insurance against price declines. As such, the cost of options is strongly correlated to the amount of fear in the market. It might be prudent in these cases to make the opposite trade -- selling put options. The seller (or writer) collects the premium, which during times of fear is very large. The risk is a significant decline in prices. See the article here, Forbes.
