Spectroelectrochemical Elucidation Of The Kinetics Of Two Closely Spaced Electron Transfers, Robert L. Keesey, Michael D. Ryan Jul 2012

Spectroelectrochemical Elucidation Of The Kinetics Of Two Closely Spaced Electron Transfers, Robert L. Keesey, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The use of spectroelectrochemistry to facilitate the analysis of an EE mechanism was reported in this work. Using a set of spectra as a function of potential, the spectra of all three oxidation states were determined using evolving window factor analysis. From these spectra, the concentration of each species in solution was determined for each potential. Using these data, the current was calculated. Unlike the direct measurement of current, the current due to each redox process was determined, allowing one to analyze each redox process separate from the other. With the use of the Butler–Volmer equation, the redox potential and …

Rehearsal Guide: An Analysis Of The Music, History, Teaching Considerations And Professional Recordings Of Choral Literature For Male Chorus, Robert J. Graham Ii

Research Papers

As a choral conductor, there are several factors to take into consideration when programming literature for the choral ensemble. These factors will influence the methods one will use in teaching this literature, informing the conductor of all the necessary information he or she needs to bring the score to life. One must consider the historical era in which the piece was composed, the background on the composer and poet, as well as have an understanding of the general characteristics of its style. One must observe the range and tessitura of the piece and determine if the ensemble is technical capable …

What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?, Clare A. Palmer Jul 2012

What (If Anything) Do We Owe Wild Animals?, Clare A. Palmer

Between the Species

It’s widely agreed that animal pain matters morally – that we shouldn’t, for instance, starve our animal companions, and that we should provide medical care to sick or injured agricultural animals, and not only because it benefits us to do so. But do we have the same moral responsibilities towards wild animals? Should we feed them if they are starving, and intervene to prevent them from undergoing other forms of suffering, for instance from predation? Using an example that includes both wild and domesticated animals, I outline two contrasting ways of thinking about our moral responsibilities with respect to assisting …

Stress- And Sex-Related Differences In The Activation Of Neuronal Subtypes In The Basolateral Amygdala Of The Rat, Alejandra E. Lopez, Christina C. Ruiz, Juan M. Bolanos, Jameel N. Hamdan, Kristin Gosselink Jul 2012

Stress- And Sex-Related Differences In The Activation Of Neuronal Subtypes In The Basolateral Amygdala Of The Rat, Alejandra E. Lopez, Christina C. Ruiz, Juan M. Bolanos, Jameel N. Hamdan, Kristin Gosselink

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

Previous studies suggest that stress alters the activational profiles among phenotypically-distinct subpopulations of neurons within the basolateral amygdala (BLA) of the rat. Given the connectivity of this region of the brain to the hippocampus, and the implications of the role of the BLA in modulating long-term potentiation associated with memory and learning, inferences of stress having a negative impact on cognition and memory can be drawn. Observations regarding stress response disparities between males and females in our model prompted the investigation of the role gender plays in cognition under conditions of stress, as well as the responses to stress itself. …

Transition States Of Dbt Molecule At The Mos2/Co9s8 Interface: First Principles, Svetlana Gelpi, Alvaro S. Laham, Gilles Berhault, Brenda Torres, Russel R. Chianelli, Manuel Ramos *

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

Sulfur removal in crude oil, is one of most important application when designing catalytic material to target hydrodesulphurization reactions. This particular study comprehends the quantum computational calculations for the transitional states during the HDS reaction in the molecular model of MoS2/Co9S8, which is a theoretical molecular model to describe the synergic contact between both crystallographic structures. Results produced using the exchange correlation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) functional indicate the existence of endothermic and exothermic transitions during the attachment of DBT molecules. In addition, it proves that promotion (addition of Co, Ni) provokes the electronic configuration of electron …

Online Public Access Catalog Retrieval Structures And Techniques: With Reference To Recent Developments In The United States And Great Britain, Sharon E. Clark, William H. Mischo

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The last few years have witnessed the introduction of several important information technologies, including powerful microcomputer workstations, optical disk and advanced magnetic disk storage media, computer graphics technologies, the availability of nationwide and campus wide computer networks, and the use of sophisticated search engines (such as BRS/SEARCH) in local online catalogs. These technologies have greatly influenced all aspects of library information services, including the provision of enhanced subject access and access to a wider variety of bibliographic resources for library users.

The United States and Great Britain are both taking leadership roles in developing effective solutions to improved access and …

Is Africa Semper Aliquod Novi?, Maybelle Botha Jul 2012

Is Africa Semper Aliquod Novi?, Maybelle Botha

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

I chose to paraphrase Pliny's famous remark about there always being something new out of Africa as a title for this brief overview of information technologies in Southern Africa, because I would like to illustrate that we on the Southern point of Africa are not as isolated as we or the rest of the world sometimes imagine . I will also try to show that we are also there when it comes to something new.

Does Information Technology Increase The Division Between Rich And Poor?, Dennis Shaw Jul 2012

Does Information Technology Increase The Division Between Rich And Poor?, Dennis Shaw

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The division between rich and poor countries manifests itself in a variety of ways. With regard to libraries and information services, it is usually illustrated by the paucity of funds to acquire current monographs and periodicals. The Third World Academy of Sciences has initiated the latest effort to reduce the literature shortage in the libraries of universities and colleges. It is not yet known how successful this initiative has been. The theme of this paper is the extent to which the development of the new information technologies has affected this division between well-resourced and poorly-resourced libraries. The data presented here …

Cd-Rom Networking Developments Amongst The Oxford Libraries (Abstract Only), David Price Jul 2012

Cd-Rom Networking Developments Amongst The Oxford Libraries (Abstract Only), David Price

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In recent years, CD-ROM products have become established as an important supplement to the services offered within Oxford libraries. On a stand-alone basis, they are used extensively as bibliographic tools with the readers as the primary end-users. Of growing significance is their use by cataloging staff as sources of bibliographic records and Library of Congress Subject Headings for adding to OLIS, Oxford's DOBIS/LIBIS integrated library system.

In order to make CD-ROMs more widely available by cost-effective means, the University is currently examining multi-user, networking solutions. This paper will discuss the three approaches that are being taken: Logicraft 386-ware & CD-ware, …

There is also a growing number of industrial and commercial organizations connected, all working in collaboration with members of the academic community. The Computer Board has always …

Analysis Of Subject Searching In The Tenttu Books Database, Irma Pasanen-Tuomainen Jul 2012

Analysis Of Subject Searching In The Tenttu Books Database, Irma Pasanen-Tuomainen

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This study was the pilot study for an Internordic project to monitor the use of online catalogues in the Nordic technological university libraries to be started in the Fall 1991. Most of the Nordic online OPACs have been in operation for more than a decade but not much information is available on how the users actually carry out their searches in these systems. On the whole, subject searching in OPACs is generally little examined. In this pilot study the main emphasis was on the use of classification in subject searching: how the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is used and the …

The Use Of Technology For Better Management Decision-Making In A University Library, Anthony S C Hooper Jul 2012

The Use Of Technology For Better Management Decision-Making In A University Library, Anthony S C Hooper

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In 1980, after more than ten years of looking at the potential advantages offered to library management by the computerization of library services, the University of Cape Town Libraries proudly possessed a periodicals list generated on the University's mainframe IBM 360, and a FAMULUS listing of projector slides in the architecture library. Attempts to obtain a word processor or microcomputer for the low cost automation of some technical processes were sidelined in the bureaucracy which controlled such things at that time. A series of library management problems which could best be solved by exploiting available computer technology has led to …

Library Workstations And The Changing Paradigm Of Library Service, Barton M. Clark Jul 2012

Library Workstations And The Changing Paradigm Of Library Service, Barton M. Clark

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In 1645 Oxford's Bodleian Library denied Charles I the loan of a book.[l] It could be argued, that with the English Civil War well advanced, Charles I was a bad risk. On the other hand, Oxford was at the time a stronghold of partisans to the Crown. Whatever the case, just four years later Charles I was executed. I am not sure this is an example of cause and effect but it does serve to highlight how libraries have so frequently approached the question of access.

Three hundred and fifty years later access has not improved that much. A user …

Artificial Intelligence In Information Services: Revolution Or Survival?, John A. Mess Jul 2012

Artificial Intelligence In Information Services: Revolution Or Survival?, John A. Mess

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The evolution of society places a growing demand on access to information. Libraries have been pivotal in shaping society by providing this access, but now that role has been altered by information dynamics and knowledge economics. The rapid advances in computer technology and software design, especially in artificial intelligence, have shifted libraries to a "demand" economy. Unless libraries begin exploiting the technologies and innovate manage information and knowledge, they may face obsolescence in the 21st century.

The Library As Hub Of The Network Universe, Patrick Kelly Jul 2012

The Library As Hub Of The Network Universe, Patrick Kelly

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In submitting a proposed paper for this conference I made four definitive statements:

  1. The library is positioned at the hub or cross-over point of three network levels: the library network, the University LAN and WANs/VANs.
  2. There is a perfect marriage between the library and networks: the satisfaction of mutual need. Academic networks need the services the libraries can deliver as much as the library needs network services.
  3. The metamorphoses of the traditional 'computer services' function to the management of networks and networks services will justify the amalgamation of academic library and computer services as the network becomes the source of …

Learning Resources Provision And Integration In An English Polytechnic, Don Revill Jul 2012

Learning Resources Provision And Integration In An English Polytechnic, Don Revill

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

In order to meet the anticipated needs of higher education in the 1990's, Liverpool Polytechnic has had to rethink its learning services provision. The co-ordination and eventual integration of the three core services, educational development (covering educational technology and in-service faculty training), Computing and Library, has been debated.[1,2]
