Introduction: Mobile phones are ubiquitous and easy to use, and thus have the capacity to collect real-time data from large numbers of people. Research tested the feasibility and validity of an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) self-report protocol using electronic surveys on mobile phones to assess adults’ physical activity and sedentary behaviors. Methods: Adults (N = 110; 73% female, 30% Hispanic, 62% overweight/obese) completed a 4-day signal-contingent EMA protocol (Saturday–Tuesday) with eight surveys randomly spaced throughout each day. EMA items assessed current activity (e.g., Watching TV/Movies, Reading/Computer, Physical Activity/Exercise). EMA responses were time-matched to minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Here we describe the genome of Mesotoga prima MesG1.Ag4.2, the first genome of a mesophilic Thermotogales bacterium. Mesotoga prima was isolated from a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-dechlorinating enrichment culture from Baltimore Harbor sediments. Its 2.97 Mb genome is considerably larger than any previously sequenced Thermotogales genomes, which range between 1.86 and 2.30 Mb. This larger size is due to both higher numbers of protein-coding genes and larger intergenic regions. In particular, the M. prima genome contains more genes for proteins involved in regulatory functions, for instance those involved in regulation of transcription. Together with its closest relative, Kosmotoga olearia, it …

Nonprofit Ethos And Identity: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals' Websites, Jessica Marie Kokinos-Havel Jul 2012

Nonprofit Ethos And Identity: An Interdisciplinary Analysis Of People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals' Websites, Jessica Marie Kokinos-Havel

Theses and Dissertations

Research in the field of nonprofit studies tells us that nonprofit organizations have the inherent ability to provide communities with a distinctive kind of social capital in the form of collective identity and group participation. This identity function is one of the defining characteristics of the nonprofit sector. This study involves a rhetorical analysis of four websites maintained by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). Each website (PETA.org, PETA Prime, peta2, and PETAKiDS) is aimed at reaching different age groups. This provides us with a unique rhetorical perspective into how the ethos of a nonprofit organization can …

The Police/Civilian Communication Dynamic: How To Not Create More Problems Than You Were Called To Handle, Sean M. Berryman Jul 2012

The Police/Civilian Communication Dynamic: How To Not Create More Problems Than You Were Called To Handle, Sean M. Berryman

Theses and Dissertations

This project examines how police officers communicate with civilians they come into contact with on a routine basis. First is examined how young recruits are taught to take charge by using voice commands and command presence. The fact that this type of personal action overtakes one's character during this training is also discussed, as well as the fact that officers have a hard time "turning off" this command presence type of personality. The second section of the project is written directly to the officers on the street in an effort to teach them how to communicate effectively without talking to …

Promoting Blogging To Improve Interpersonal And Presentational Writing Skills While Increasing Cultural Competency In An English Language Learning Setting, Terese Cox

Theses and Dissertations

Instructors of English Language Learners (ELLs) often focus on writing as one of the primary skills acquired in the university second language classroom. This thesis examines the role of blogging in improving interpersonal and presentational writing while also increasing students' cultural competency. It describes how to create and use a web source to promote blogging in the classroom. A classroom web source to accompany Interchange 3 as well as sixteen lessons with accompanying materials and rubrics comprise a substantial portion of this thesis to practically show how blogging might be incorporated into an ESL classroom. Each lesson enforces and highlights …

Foraging And Digestive Energetics In Montane And Lowland Salamanders, Cody Lund Barnes Jul 2012

Foraging And Digestive Energetics In Montane And Lowland Salamanders, Cody Lund Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal physiology substantially limits the distributions of organisms across landscapes. Specifically, the thermal sensitivity of foraging and digestive energetics influence the quantity of energy available for allocating to specific life functions. I hypothesized that foraging and Specific Dynamic Action (SDA) performances would differ between montane endemic and lowland salamander species. I found that foraging energetics differed between the montane endemics, Plethodon ouachitae and P. caddoensis, in comparison to the lowland P. albagula. Differences in foraging energetics were particularly pronounced at the warmest temperature and the montane endemics were more thermally sensitive, suggesting that constraints in foraging energetics influence the elevational …

Supporting African American Involvement In A Doctoral Program At A Regional Comprehensive University: A Research Study Of The Experiences And Perceptions Of African American Current Doctoral Candidates And African American Doctorates, Frankie Nicholson Jul 2012

Supporting African American Involvement In A Doctoral Program At A Regional Comprehensive University: A Research Study Of The Experiences And Perceptions Of African American Current Doctoral Candidates And African American Doctorates, Frankie Nicholson

Theses and Dissertations

Education has been the path to battle moral injustice and to encourage self-governing dialogue about doing the "right thing" (Freire, 1998; Fullan, 2007; Hurtado et al., 1999; Tatum, 1992). Fullan (2007) claims that education is the "vehicle" to diminish inequities for the academically disadvantaged. Through interviews and conversations regarding their experiences and perceptions, this research study "gives voice" to African American doctorates, current doctoral students, and doctoral students who chose not to complete the doctoral educational leadership program at a regional comprehensive university in a Mid-Atlantic State (Allen, 1992, 2000; Delgado, 1995; Freeman, 1997; Soloranzo & Yosso, 2000, 2001). Assessing Readability Of College-Level Statistics Textbooks: A Quantitative Lexical And Grammatical Analysis, Ariel I. Gonzalez, Amy E. Wagler, Lawrence M. Lesser

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

This research was conceived because of the need to create and identify college level statistics textbooks (or other instructional materials)) that are written in a manner that is less intimidating and easier to read and understand for students, including English language learners. We selected a representative set of current editions of 15-20 well-known statistics textbooks (that varied in their incorporation of reform or literacy approaches) to assess and compare aspects and levels of readability. We then chose two topics for a manageable focus: measures of center and line of fit. The parts of the textbooks corresponding to these topics were …

Uniaxial Cold Pressing Of Chalcogen-Metal Compounds For Thermoelectrical Applications, Kevin A. Matos, Hugo López, Manuel Antonio Ramos, Russell Chianelli Jul 2012

Uniaxial Cold Pressing Of Chalcogen-Metal Compounds For Thermoelectrical Applications, Kevin A. Matos, Hugo López, Manuel Antonio Ramos, Russell Chianelli

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

Uniaxial cold pressing to increase the density in powders seems to be a low cost and efficient route. The aim of this study is to achieve high density by making pellets of chalcogenides compounds without using binders that can cause alteration of the material’s thermoelectric properties. These properties are Seebeck voltage, Thermal conductivity and Electrical conductivity. The characteristics of thermoelectric activity can be measured by using a Z-meter instrument. Here, we present data for two samples as pelletized at room temperature and controlled atmosphere, using two sets of loads (force) of 4 and 7 metric-tons. The maximum densification attained with …

Synthesis Of Methylene Γ-Lactones Using Carbon Dioxide, Bryan P. Ferrell, Shizue Mito, Giber Martinez, Intesar El-Feitouri Jul 2012

Synthesis Of Methylene Γ-Lactones Using Carbon Dioxide, Bryan P. Ferrell, Shizue Mito, Giber Martinez, Intesar El-Feitouri

COURI Symposium Abstracts, Summer 2012

Many industrial processes generate the greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, as a byproduct. Carbon dioxide can be captured and recycled by using it in organic synthesis to prepare beneficial compounds. The goal of this project is to develop a new method of synthesizing methylene γ-lactones using CO2-metal complexes. Many gamma lactones are biologically active, and their synthesis is of importance to pharmaceutical and other industries. Allenes can react with a transition metal-CO2 complex. It is proposed that a titanium metal complex prepared with an aldehyde will bind to an allene, and a seven-membered ring forms as CO2 …

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

I was talking to Jake the other night about Cookie Monster. Really, we were talking about the theory behind Cookie Monster's latest strategic move and how we could all learn a thing or two from him. Which move was that? The short, furry blue monster's brilliant foray into pop culture with "Share It Maybe," the music video parody of Carly Rae Jepsen's song "Call Me Maybe." In one day, Cookie has racked up 2.3 million hits on the less-than-four-minute video. [excerpt]
