Rothman Institute Papers
Periprosthetic joint infection continues to frustrate the medical community. Although the demand for total joint arthroplasty is increasing, the burden of such infections is increasing even more rapidly, and they pose a unique challenge because their accurate diagnosis and eradication can prove elusive. This review describes the current knowledge regarding diagnosis and treatment of periprosthetic joint infection. A number of tools are available to aid in establishing a diagnosis of periprosthetic joint infection. These include the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, serum C-reactive protein concentration, synovial white blood-cell count and differential, imaging studies, tissue specimen culturing, and histological analysis. Multiple definitions of …

Student Autonomy: A Case Study Of Intrinsic Motivation In The Art Classroom, Downi Griner
Theses and Dissertations
How might a curriculum based on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) influence student motivation and art making in a 9th grade art classroom? The researcher devised a negotiated curriculum called The Master Artist Program based on the SDT theory of intrinsic motivation. The implementation of this curriculum was designed to explore the question of how a curriculum based on SDT theory would influence student motivation and art making in a 9th grade art classroom. This curriculum was implemented in a ninth grade art class on an optional basis for the course of nine weeks. The results of data analysis, illustrated by relevant …

Metformin Modifies The Exercise Training Effects On Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease In Impaired Glucose Tolerant Adults, Steven K. Malin, Joy Nightingale, Sung-Eun Choi, Stuart R. Chipkin, Barry Braun
Publications and Research
Impaired glucose tolerant (IGT) adults are at elevated risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Exercise or metformin reduce CVD risk, but the efficacy of combining treatments is unclear. To determine the effects of exercise training plus metformin, compared to each treatment alone, on CVD risk factors in IGT adults. Subjects were assigned to: placebo (P), metformin (M), exercise plus placebo (EP), or exercise plus metformin (EM) (8/group). In a double-blind design, P or 2000mg/d of M were administered for 12 weeks and half performed aerobic and resistance training 3 days/week for approximately 60 minutes/day at 70% pre-training heart rate peak. Outcomes …

The Effect Of Baseline Cluster Stratification On The Power Of Pre-Post Analysis, Fengjiao Hu
The Effect Of Baseline Cluster Stratification On The Power Of Pre-Post Analysis, Fengjiao Hu
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of study is to check whether the power of detecting the effect of intervention versus control in a pre- and post-study can be increased by using a stratified randomized controlled design. A stratified randomized controlled design with two study arms and two time points, where strata are determined by clustering on baseline outcomes of the primary measure, is considered. A modified hierarchical clustering algorithm is developed which guarantees optimality as well as requiring each cluster to have at least one subject per study arm. The power is calculated based on simulated bivariate normal distributed primary measures with mixture …

Maximizing Transmission Opportunities In Wireless Multihop Networks, Jeong-Yoon Lee, Chansu Yu, Kang G. Shin, Young-Joo Suh
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Being readily available in most of 802.11 radios, multirate capability appears to be useful as WiFi networks are getting more prevalent and crowded. More specifically, it would be helpful in high-density scenarios because internode distance is short enough to employ high data rates. However, communication at high data rates mandates a large number of hops for a given node pair in a multihop network and thus, can easily be depreciated as per-hop overhead at several layers of network protocol is aggregated over the increased number of hops. This paper presents a novel multihop, multirate adaptation mechanism, called multihop transmission opportunity …

Cell Death And Growth Arrest Pathways Mediating The Actions Of Stilbene 5c In Hct-116 Colon Cancer Cells, Moureq Alotaibi
Theses and Dissertations
Abstract The stilbene derivative, cis-3, 4’, 5-trimethoxy-3’-aminostilbene (stilbene 5c), is a potentially potent antitumor agent that acts via binding to the colchicine-binding pocket in microtubules. Earlier studies have shown that stilbene 5c induces cell death in ovarian cancer cells and leukemic cells. The present study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of this microtubule poison against the HCT-116 human colon cancer cell line and its mechanisms of action. Time course studies demonstrated that stilbene 5c produces a biphasic decrease in cell viability. The capacity of the cells to proliferate was not restored upon removal of the drug after 6 days …
Multiple Fundamental Frequency Pitch Detection For Real Time Midi Applications, Nathan Hilbish
Multiple Fundamental Frequency Pitch Detection For Real Time Midi Applications, Nathan Hilbish
Theses and Dissertations
This study aimed to develop a real time multiple fundamental frequency detection algorithm for real time pitch to MIDI conversion applications. The algorithm described here uses neural network classifiers to make classifications in order to define a chord pattern (combination of multiple fundamental frequencies). The first classification uses a binary decision tree that determines the root note (first note) in a combination of notes; this is achieved through a neural network binary classifier. For each leaf of the binary tree, each classifier determines the frequency group of the root note (low or high frequency) until only two frequencies are left …

Neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) display coordinated circadian changes in electrical activity that are critical for daily rhythms in physiology, metabolism, and behavior. SCN neurons depolarize spontaneously and fire repetitively during the day and hyperpolarize, drastically reducing firing rates, at night. To explore the hypothesis that rapidly activating and inactivating A-type (I(A)) voltage-gated K(+) (Kv) channels, which are also active at subthreshold membrane potentials, are critical regulators of the excitability of SCN neurons, we examined locomotor activity and SCN firing in mice lacking Kv1.4 (Kv1.4(-/-)), Kv4.2 (Kv4.2(-/-)), or Kv4.3 (Kv4.3(-/-)), the pore-forming (α) subunits of I(A) channels. Mice lacking …

Does Pair-Matching On Ordered Baseline Measures Increase Power: A Simulation Study, Yan Jin
Does Pair-Matching On Ordered Baseline Measures Increase Power: A Simulation Study, Yan Jin
Theses and Dissertations
It has been shown that pair-matching on an ordered baseline with normally distributed measures reduces the variance of the estimated treatment effect (Park and Johnson, 2006). The main objective of this study is to examine if pair-matching improves the power when the distribution is a mixture of two normal distributions. Multiple scenarios with a combination of different sample sizes and parameters are simulated. The power curves are provided for three cases, with and without matching, as follows: analysis of post-intervention data only, adding baseline as a covariate, and classic pre-post comparison. The study shows that the additional variance reduction provided …

A search for first-generation leptoquarks was performed in electron-proton and positron-proton collisions recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA in 2003-2007 using an integrated luminosity of 366pb-1. Final states with an electron and jets or with missing transverse momentum and jets were analyzed, searching for resonances or other deviations from the standard model predictions. No evidence for any leptoquark signal was found. The data were combined with data previously taken at HERA, resulting in a total integrated luminosity of 498pb-1. Limits on the Yukawa coupling, λ, of leptoquarks were set as a function of the leptoquark mass for different leptoquark …

Re-Examining Green Revolution Diffusion And Factor/Input Markets In Bangladesh After Market Liberalization, S Rahman, Ia Begum, Mj Alam
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
This paper re‐examines the effect of green revolution (GR) diffusion on factor/inputs demand in Bangladesh using an empirical model that allows for simultaneous determination of factors influencing adoption of GR technology at the current mature stage, as well as access to irrigation. Results reveal some alignments with conventional wisdom as well as few surprises. For example, while an increased demand for major inputs is expected, an increased demand for organic manure is an unexpected positive outcome. The GR adoption rate is significantly higher in villages with access to irrigation and fertile soils and, surprisingly, in infrastructurally underdeveloped villages. Together with …
