Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication Effect In Thrust-Slide Bearings Of Scroll Compressors, Noriaki Ishii, Takuma Tsuji, Tatsuya Oku, Keiko Anami, Takashi Morimoto

International Compressor Engineering Conference

This paper presents the concept of the Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication (EHL) effect for the thrust slide-bearings in scroll compressors, which accounts for the superior lubrication characteristics of these bearings. The thrust plate undergoes elastic deformation due to axial loading, resulting in the formation of a fluid wedge between the orbiting and fixed thrust plates, a region with very high induced oil film pressure which, in turn, accounts for the remarkably good lubrication characteristics of the thrust slide-bearing. Furthermore, the high oil film pressure induces further elastic deformation of the thrust plate, which forms a lubrication pocket with the thrust plate, more …

The Experimental And Simulation Analysis Of The Transmission Loss Of The Muffler In The Rotary Compressor, Rongting Zhang, Huanhuan Gu, Jia Xu

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The discharge muffler of the rotary compressor is used to reduce the discharge noise produced by pressure pulsations. In order to obtain the transmission loss of discharge muffler, four microphone experimental devices used to measure the transmission loss of the muffler is established. The device is based on the transfer function method on the assumption that there is only plane wave in the tube, thus the measurement range of the device is discussed at the same time. Then the transmission loss of a contraction chamber is measured and calculated theoretically and the validity of the experimental device is verified through …

Internal Cooling Of The Piston Rod In Non-Lubricated Piston Compressors, Christiane Hammer, Gotthard Will, Ullrich Hesse Jul 2012

Internal Cooling Of The Piston Rod In Non-Lubricated Piston Compressors, Christiane Hammer, Gotthard Will, Ullrich Hesse

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In non-lubricated piston compressors the wear of the piston rod packing rings is still a problem that needs to be considered. Due to the demands of high gas pressure and leak-tight sealing the frictional heat of the rings is causing high temperatures in the area of the piston rod packing. High temperatures are – among other factors – one reason for an increase of wear and thus for a lifetime reduction of the packing. To increase this lifetime – and so to increase the time between two technical services – the idea of an internal cooling of the piston rod …

A Numerical Study Of Convective Heat Transfer In The Compression Chambers Of Scroll Compressors, Evandro L. L. Pereira, Cesar J. Deschamps

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Convective heat transfer in the compression chambers of scroll compressors affects important quantities associated with the compression cycle, such as the volumetric efficiency and the discharge gas temperature. In spite of its relevance, heat transfer in scroll compressors has not been sufficiently studied mainly due to difficulties associated with its geometry. This paper presents a numerical model developed to predict the convective heat transfer in the compression chambers of scroll compressors, by applying the finite volume method to solve the conservation equations for mass, momentum and energy. An equation of state for real gas was also considered to complete the …

However, a suitable compressor with high pressure ratio and low discharge temperature is not available in engineering practice. In this paper a water-injected twin screw compressor recognized as a promising type for water vapor compression is presented by detailed descriptions of the rotor profile development and structure design. Then the calculation of water quantity and its influence on the steam flow rate are presented. Moreover, the effects of injected water on the working process and performance of the …

Identifying Noise And Vibration Of The Discharge Stage In The Rotary Compressor Based On Angle Domain Analysis Method, Huanhuan Gu, Rongting Zhang, Jia Xu

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In the noise and vibration test of the rotary compressor, the peak value of noise and the corresponding frequency can be identified according to the analysis of frequency spectrum. But it can not be obtained that the noise is in which rotation angle range according to the analysis of frequency spectrum, which can be obtained according to the equal angles sampling system. In this paper, the noise and vibration of rotary compressor under different operating frequency in angle domain can be measured using the multi-pulse method, which divides a working cycle into many equal angles. According to comparing the spectrum …

Noise And Vibration Characteristic Studies Of Twin Screw Compressor In Different Operating Conditions, Bor-Tsuen Wang, Chang-Hung Hsieh, Wen-Chi Wang, Chia-Liang Liu

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The tonal noise or vibration of air-cooled or water-cooled chillers with rotary twin screw compressors is crucial for environmental concerns. This work aims to perform the receiver tests regarding the radiated noise and structural vibration due to the compressor in different operating conditions. The sound pressure near the compressor is recorded by the one-third octave and narrow band frequency analyzers, respectively. For environmental concern, the one-third octave band spectrum is frequently adopted to evaluate the radiated noise, while the narrow band spectrum can be used to characterize the noise sources. The axial, vertical and horizontal accelerations on the compressor shell …

Cfd Analysis Inside A Co2 Rotary Compressor Shell To Improve Oil Separation And Reduce The Shell Size, Tetsuhide Yokoyama, Keisuke Shingu, Shin Sekiya, Hideaki Maeyama, Nobuya Nishimura

International Compressor Engineering Conference

A CO2 rotary compresspr uses refrigeration oil to lubricate and cool sliding parts and to seal the cylinder. It is difficult to separate the oil inside the shell at high pressure from CO2 gas, whose difference in density from the oil is small. It remains an issue to retain high efficiency with the same shell size as a present hydro fluorocarbon (HFC) compressor. We explored an improvement in the oil separation by use of CFD analysis and identified two effective measures. One measure is to flatten a lower balance weight of the rotor to prevent the oil mist from moving …

An Experimental Study Of Lubrication In Thrust Slide-Bearings Of Scroll Compressors - Effect Of Thickness And Inside Form Of Thrust Plate -, Takuma Tsuji, Noriaki Ishii, Tatsuya Oku, Keiko Anami, Kouichi Nokiyama

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The present study focuses on the effect of the thickness and inner form of the thrust plate in a scroll compressor upon the lubrication features. A simplified model of a annular thrust slide-bearing with thinner thrust plate submerged in a refrigerant oil VG-56 was operated under pressure using R-22 as the pressurizing gas, where the pressure difference was adjusted from 0 to 1.0 MPa. The friction force and coefficient of friction were measured over a wide range of orbiting speeds. The wedge angle due to elastic deformation is naturally increased with decreasing thrust plate thickness, resulting in a clear improvement …

Theoretical Study Of A Novel Multi Vane Rotary Compressor, Abd Rahim Mat Sarip, Md Nor Musa Jul 2012

Theoretical Study Of A Novel Multi Vane Rotary Compressor, Abd Rahim Mat Sarip, Md Nor Musa

International Compressor Engineering Conference

This paper presents results of a theoretical study on a new novel concept of a multi-vane rotary (MVR) compressor with the axis vertical. In this concept a sleeve (or cylinder) and a mechanical rotor are eccentrically mounted such that both touch each other circumferentially at one linear point of contact during a rotation. One vane (primary) has its rounded end embedded fairly loosely into the sleeve causing it to be rotated along with the vane and at the same time the vane reciprocates in a slot in the mechanical rotor. The other vanes (secondary) are free to slide out of …

Cfd Modelling In Screw Compressors With Complex Multi Rotor Configurations, Sham Ramchandra Rane, Ahmed Kovacevic, Madhulika Kethidi

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) of screw compressors is challenging due to the positive displacement nature of the process, existence of very fine fluid leakage paths, coexistence of working fluid and lubricant or coolant, fluid injection and most importantly the lack of methodologies available to generate meshes required for the full three dimensional transient simulations. In this paper, currently available technology of grid remeshing has been used to demonstrate the CFD simulations of complex multi rotor screw compressors like the twin screw compressor with parallel axis and single screw compressor with cylindrical main rotor and two planar gate rotors with perpendicular …

Approach To The Numeric Geometry Analysis Of Positive Displacement Compressors, Its Application To A Single Screw Compressor Simulation And Verification By Experiment, Kirill Michailovich Ignatiev

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Thermodynamic models to simulate positive displacement compressors are well known for a few decades already and can describe the compressor performance quite well. One of the most complex part of the simulation process however is the positive displacement compressor geometry simulation. In the current context, under geometry simulation, values of working compressor volumes, as well as cross-sections of port openings, at different shaft (rotor) angles are considered. In the current paper, as an example, the Greene formula approach was applied to a geometry simulation of a single screw compressor. Working chamber geometry was defined by “cutting “ it with the gate …

A Computationally Efficient Hybrid Leakage Model For Modeling Leakage In Positive Displacement Compressors, Ian H. Bell, Eckhard A. Groll, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton

International Compressor Engineering Conference

An empirical frictional correction factor to the isentropic nozzle model has been developed for application to leakage modeling in scroll, rotary and other similar compressors. This correction factor is derived by calculating the leakage mass flow with a compressible, variable area, real gas properties model and then correlating the ratio of this flow to the isentropic nozzle model prediction. The ratio of flows is correlated to the Reynolds number, a characteristic length and the leakage gap width. A representative selection of fluids and geometries are employed, and the correlations predict at least 93% of the detailed model results within an …

Incorporating 3d Suction Or Discharge Plenum Geometry Into A 1d Compressor Simulation Program To Calculate Compressor Pulsations, Jack Sauls, Keith Novak

International Compressor Engineering Conference

A 3D calculated impedance transfer matrix method has been developed and demonstrated to provide accurate and efficient prediction of pressure pulsations in positive displacement compressors. The method is easily incorporated into 1D compressor simulation models, where a single impedance matrix, normalized to density and speed of sound, can be used to model all compressor running speeds and operating conditions. The general transfer matrix or “4 pole” method is documented by Bilal, et al (2010) where the hybrid approach used here is also introduced. More recent developments of this method are presented by Novak and Sauls (2012). This paper describes how …

Under-Compression (Over-Expansion) – An Isochoric Or Adiabatic Process?, Paul Xiubao Huang Jul 2012

Under-Compression (Over-Expansion) – An Isochoric Or Adiabatic Process?, Paul Xiubao Huang

International Compressor Engineering Conference

It has long been established that for a Positive Displacement (PD) compressor or expander such as reciprocating or rotary screw type, the thermodynamic process is adiabatic when compressor or expander discharge pressure is equal to system back pressure (or 100% internal compression or expansion). At this design point, compressor or expander efficiency and noise are most desirable. But more often, PD compressor or expander operates at off-design points where the discharge pressure is either lower or higher than the system back pressure caused by the inherent nature of possessing a fixed built-in volume ratio. The resulting processes are often called …

Analytical And Cfd Modeling Of The Fluid Flow In An Eccentric-Tube Centrifugal Oil Pump For Hermetic Compressors, Marcus Alves, Jader Barbosa Jr., Alvaro Prata

International Compressor Engineering Conference

A model is presented for calculating the volume flow rate in an eccentric-tube centrifugal oil pump for reciprocating compressors. The oil pump assembly consists of a pick-up tube with an inclined inlet that is mounted off-center with the crankshaft symmetry axis. The pick-up tube is connected to the shaft channel; a helical groove machined on the crankshaft that facilitates the supply of lubricant to the bearings. The analytical models for the pick-up tube and shaft channel were developed independently and were coupled via a numerical procedure to determine the steadystate volume flow rate in the assembly. The steady-state results were …

An Experimental Study Of Refrigerant Desorption From A Refrigerant-Oil Mixture Subjected To Rapid Depressurization, Fabio Fortkamp, Moises Marcelino Neto, Jader Barbosa Jr.

International Compressor Engineering Conference

This paper deals with the experimental assessment of refrigerant desorption leading to foam formation in R-134a/POE oil mixtures undergoing controlled depressurization. An experimental apparatus was designed and constructed to allow measurements of pressure drop rate, foam height and refrigerant gas mass flux resulting from decompression and desorption from a saturated liquid mixture. High-speed video recording of the phenomenon enabled the identification of three main periods during the depressurization/foaming process, namely, depressurization without cavitation, vapor flashing and rapid foam growth, and foam layer decay. The experimental results for the maximum foam height, foam lifetime and liquid supersaturation during desorption were explored …

Modeling The Stiction Effect In Automatic Compressor Valves, Rodrigo Adrian Pizarro-Recabarren, Jader Barbosa Jr., Cesar J. Deschamps Jul 2012

Modeling The Stiction Effect In Automatic Compressor Valves, Rodrigo Adrian Pizarro-Recabarren, Jader Barbosa Jr., Cesar J. Deschamps

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The so-called stiction effect (or stiction force) is one of the sources of thermodynamic losses in compressor suction and discharge systems. The losses associated with the stiction effect are caused by a deformation of the lubricating oil film between the valve and the seat. This generates a delay in the valve opening, since larger pressure differencesbetween the cylinder and the discharge and/or suction chambers are needed to compensate for those effects. This paper advances a theoretical model for solving the dynamic behavior of a ring-shaped lubricant oil film between a discharge valve and the seat. The valve is allowed to …

A Heat Transfer Model Combining Differential And Integral Formulations For Thermal Analysis Of Reciprocating Compressors, Joel Sanvezzo Jr, Cesar J. Deschamps

International Compressor Engineering Conference

Heat transfer in hermetic compressors is a complex phenomenon strongly affected by fluid flow inside and outside the compression chamber and by the efficiency of both the electrical motor and the crankshaft mechanism. This paper presents a heat transfer model for thermal analysis of reciprocating compressors formed by combining a lumped formulation for convective heat transfer in some selected regions and a three-dimensional differential formulation for heat conduction in the solid components. Convective heat transfer coefficients were evaluated from correlations available in the literature so as to avoid calibration based on experimental data. The model was applied to a reciprocating …

A Low Friction Thrust Bearing For Reciprocating Compressors, Shuhei Nagata, Hirokatsu Kousokabe, Nobuya Sekiyama, Toshiaki Ono

International Compressor Engineering Conference

A thrust bearing with a micro texture on its sliding surface that produces hydrodynamic pressure was developed for use in reciprocating compressors. Evaluation using an elemental friction test showed that its friction loss was 20–60 % lower than that of the current design. Measurement of the efficiency of a compressor with the developed thrust bearing showed that the coefficient of performance was 1.4 % higher than that of a compressor with a conventional thrust bearing.

Influence Of Thermal Deformation On The Characteristic Diagram Of A Screw Expander In The Automotive Application Of Exhaust Heat Recovery, Alexander Nikolov, Christopher Huck, Andreas Brümmer

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The present paper responds to the operating behavior of an exemplarily selected screw expander for exhaust heat recovery from combustion engines in the lower power range. The application in vehicles for the purpose of heat recovery, which is characterized by the small machine dimensions due to relatively low system mass flows, is a still unexplored area for the screw-type machine. The screw expander is to be used in an organic Rankine cycle (ORC). Compared to other expander designs in general screw expanders are characterized by high efficiency together with relatively low geometrical dimensions. Within the presented investigation mainly the performance …

Experimental Testing Of Oil-Flooded Hermetic Scroll Compressor, Ian H. Bell, Eckhard A. Groll, James E. Braun, W. Travis Horton

International Compressor Engineering Conference

In this work, a residential air conditioning compressor designed for vapor injection has been modified in order to inject large quantities of oil into the working chamber in order to approach an isothermal compression process. For a range of different oil injection scenarios, the result is a monotonic decrease in compressor discharge temperature as the oil injection rate is increased. In addition, the pumped refrigerant mass flow rate tends to increase as the oil injection rate is increased.

Improvement Of Abnormal Wear Between The Vane-Slot And Vane In Rotary Compressor, Bo Huang, Guoqiang Gao

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The reason for the abnormal wear between the vane-slot and the vane in the rotary compressor is analyzed in this paper. Firstly, the influence of lubrication at the clearance, the machining equipment accuracy and oil circulation (oil flow rate) is analyzed. Then the material characteristics including the hardness of the vane and vane-slot, the surface treatment of the vane and the deformation of the vane-slot after welding are discussed. After we find the main correlating factors, we will examine the results from the experiments. Eventually, problem of the abnormal wear is solved by inducing an innovative oil circulation.

A Simplified Cfd Model For Simulation Of The Suction Process Of Reciprocating Compressors, Evandro L. L. Pereira, Claudio J. Santos, Cesar J. Deschamps, Rodrigo Kremer

International Compressor Engineering Conference

The suction process in reciprocating compressors is strongly affected by the valve dynamics and the pulsating flow throughout the suction muffler. This paper describes a simplified computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to simulate the flow through the muffler, suction valve and a small region inside the cylinder. The proposed method is applied to predict the suction process of a small reciprocating compressor and its adequacy is compared with a more time elaborate model in terms of accuracy, computation cost and usability.

The initial position of piston head is near to the top dead center and coil springs are on free status. The experiments on the prototype are carried out by compressing air on different working conditions. The experimental results show that the linear compressor with one side springs can take good advantage of the gas springcharacteristics of the compressed work fluid to reduce the stiffness of mechanical spring and the weight of compressor. However the mechanical springs cannot …
