The Gas/Dust Ratio Of Circumstellar Disks: Testing Models Of Planetesimal Formation, David Horne, Erika Gibb, Terrence Rettig, Sean Brittain, David Tilley, Dinshaw Balsara

We present high-resolution, near-infrared NIRSPEC observations of CO absorption toward six class II T Tauri stars: AA Tau, DG Tau, IQ Tau, RY Tau, CW Tau, and Haro 6-5b. 12CO overtone absorption lines originating from the circumstellar disk of each object were used to calculate line-of-sight gas column densities toward each source. We measured the gas/dust ratio as a function of disk inclination, utilizing measured visual extinctions and inclinations for each star. The majority of our sources show further evidence for a correlation between the gas/dust column density ratio and disk inclination similar to that found by Rettig et al.

While US-led unipolarity may still be the guiding frame for post-Cold War international economic, political, and military relations, we argue that its applicability to global science and environmental issues is waning. We begin by discussing the global problem of anthropogenic climate change, and the technologies involved in geo-engineering as one possible response. We then recognize both the abundance of oil in Alberta and the near-term melting of the Arctic as critical inputs into Canadian climate change policy. Individuals can use verbal resources of the phonological loop to support goal-directed behavior. Resources of the phonological loop are known to support goal-directed behavior via the maintenance and retrieval of stimulus-response maps (S-R), but it is also possible that these resources control behavior more broadly by contributing to the choice of what task to perform, i.e. task choice or task selection. To evaluate the role of phonological resources in task choice a unique variant of task switching was used, voluntary task switching (VTS). A Fmri Study Of Auditory Orienting And Inhibition Of Return In Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury, Zhen Yang

Studies in adult mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have shown that two key measures of attention, spatial reorienting and inhibition of return (IOR), are impaired during the first few weeks of injury. However, it is currently unknown whether similar deficits exist following pediatric mTBI. The current study used fMRI to investigate the effects of semi-acute mTBI (< 3 weeks post-injury) on auditory orienting in 14 pediatric mTBI patients (age 13.50 ± 1.83; education: 6.86 ± 1.88) and 14 healthy controls (age 13.29 ± 2.09; education: 7.21 ± 2.08) matched for age and years of education. Results indicated that patients with mTBI showed subtle (i.e., moderate effect sizes) but non-significant deficits on formal neuropsychological testing and during inhibition of return. In contrast, functional imaging results indicated that patients with mTBI demonstrated significantly decreased activation within the bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus, thalamus, basal ganglia, midbrain nuclei, and cerebellum. The spatial topography of hypoactivation was very similar to our previous study in adults, suggesting that subcortical structures may be particularly affected by the initial biomechanical forces in mTBI. Current results also suggest that fMRI may be a more sensitive tool for identifying semi-acute effects of mTBI than the procedures currently used in clinical practice such as neuropsychological testing and structural scans. fMRI findings could potentially serve as a biomarker for measuring the subtle injury caused by mTBI and documenting the course of recovery.

The development of new catalytic reactions, particularly synthetically efficient cascade processes for the facile preparation of important molecular architectures, which otherwise are difficult to access via traditional methods, is of considerable significance. Toward this end, my Ph.D. work focuses on developing new organocatalytic reactions and their applications in organic syntheses. A novel direct organocatalytic stereoselective α-arylation methodology has been discovered. The cross-coupling-like products are assembled using simple enals and various brominated aromatic systems, such as p-bromophenols, bromonaphthols and 3-bromoindoles. The products have been applied in the concise photo-syntheses of [α]-annulated carbazoles. Moreover, an unexpected reaction has been identified with aliphatic …

Reltrons are high power electron beam microwave oscillators that do not require an external magnetic field. The University of New Mexico (UNM) has a low power educational reltron system developed during an AFOSR-sponsored FY94 Multi- University Research Initiative (MURI) program. This dissertation focuses on developing mathematical models of, and performing particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and conducting experiments on the low power reltron. The modules in the reltron tube can be described using mathematical models. We first analyze the minimum beam potential required to self-excite the modulating cavity. This mixed-methods study evaluated quality, usage, and perceptions of open educational resources compared to traditionally published textbooks. Because textbooks and other related materials make up a significant portion of educational costs, open educational resources have been explored for potential cost savings at all levels of education. These resources use public domain or open-licensed materials as the content component of free eTextbooks or low-cost printed textbooks. For a graph G, let γ:V(G)→1,⋯,|V(G)| be a one-to-one function. The bandwidth of γ is the maximum of |γ(u)-γ(v)| over uv∈E(G). The bandwidth of G, denoted b(G), is the minimum bandwidth over all embeddings γ, b(G)=min γmax|γ(u)-γ(v) |:uv∈E(G). In this paper, we show that the bandwidth computation problem for trees of diameter at most 4 can be solved in polynomial time. This naturally complements the result computing the bandwidth for 2-caterpillars. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

BACKGROUND:

Muscle protein turnover regulation during cancer cachexia is being rapidly defined, and skeletal muscle mitochondria function appears coupled to processes regulating muscle wasting. Skeletal muscle oxidative capacity and the expression of proteins regulating mitochondrial biogenesis and dynamics are disrupted in severely cachectic Apc^Min/+ mice. It has not been determined if these changes occur at the onset of cachexia and are necessary for the progression of muscle wasting. Exercise and anti-cytokine therapies have proven effective in preventing cachexia development in tumor bearing mice, while their effect on mitochondrial content, biogenesis and dynamics is not well understood. The novel Agnes von Lilien by Caroline von Wolzogen, although celebrated during the period of Weimar Classicism, was not generally well known to English-speaking readers and researchers until recently. This project aims to address this situation by creating an easily accessible English translation of the novel complete with critical annotations for the benefit of researchers and lay readers alike. The annotated translation presented in this work is an excerpt of the full translation of the work drawn in particular from the first third of the novel. Mitigating The Intensity Of Therapist Self-Criticism: A Grounded Theory Analysis, Divya Kannan

Research on how therapists-in-training experience their development and education has been gaining attention in the psychotherapy literature. In this study, developing therapists were interviewed about their experience of self-criticism related to psychotherapy practice and these interviews were subjected to a grounded theory analysis generating a model of these self-critical processes. Results highlighted the intensity of self-criticism in therapists' training experiences, especially when they related to their clients from an "expert role." The results also described ways in which self-criticism is mitagted by a sense of interpersonal safety and clinical freedom and flexibility in therapists' training. This dissertation examines Cindy Sheehan's Iraq War protests from November 2004 to May 2007 as a case study of contentious rhetoric. The notion of contentious rhetoric is based on the concept of contentious politics developed by sociologist and political scientist Charles Tilly, sociologist Doug McAdam, and political scientist Sidney Tarrow. This new conceptualization acts as a guide to understanding how Sheehan navigates the dichotomy between women and war and how she uses her own motherhood as validation for her protests. Pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP) from Phytolacca americana is a ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP) and an RNA N-glycosidase that removes specific purine residues from the sarcin/ricin loop of large rRNA, arresting protein synthesis at the translocation step. PAP is also a cap-binding protein and is a potent antiviral agent against many plant, animal, and human viruses. To elucidate the mechanism of RNA depurination, and to understand how PAP recognizes and targets various RNAs, the interactions between PAP and turnip mosaic virus genomelinked protein (VPg) were investigated. During cellular stress, p53 can slow down cell cycle progression, allowing DNA to either be repaired or lead to cell apoptosis. In human cancer, the most common changes in p53 are missense point mutations within the coding sequences of p53 gene. Hyperekplexia is distinguished by exaggerated muscle tension, sudden shock and even death in response to touch/acoustic stimuli. Genetic analysis showed that mutations on glycinergic proteins on the presynaptic neurons are responsible for the attacks. Mutations in the Glycine Transporter 2 (GlyT2) have been suggested to be the second major cause of hyperekplexia. The GlyT2 consist of twelve transmembrane domains, a 201 amino acid long N-terminus and a shorter C-terminus, both intracellular. Dysfunction of this transporter prevents the intake of glycine from the synapse back to the presynaptic neuron. Our goal is to better understand the role of N-terminus on protein …

Ethanol consumption is frequently associated with disinhibited sexual and locomotor behaviors in humans. Dopamine, a major monoamine found in vertebrates and invertebrates, is implicated in these processes since it regulates motivation, reward, motor control, and sexual behaviors. The goal of this study is to elucidate the role of dopamine in ethanol-associated behavioral disinhibition using the genetically tractable model system Drosophila melanogaster. Previous studies have shown a requirement for normal dopamine neurotransmission for ethanol-induced courtship disinhibition. Furthermore, genetic manipulation of the dopamine system revealed that D1 receptor activity is important for disinhibition and D2 for sensitization. The current study focuses …

Larrea tridentata also known as Creosote is a North American shrub, whose leave extracts are proposed to contain anti-cancer properties. The main metabolite in this plant is the nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) has been shown to have anti-neoplastic, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. NDGA is a strong anti-oxidant that can scavenge or inhibit reactive oxygen spices production, stimulate nitric oxide production, increase immune function, enhance central nervous system function, and prevent cardiovascular or other diseases.
