To Use Or Not To Use: The Role Of Affect And Cognition In Changing Attitudes Toward Using Condoms Among African American Women, Kristina Hood

The current project involved three studies designed to examine which characteristics of persuasive communications change condom use attitudes. Study 1 investigated the effect of message type (affective versus cognitive) and source (male versus female) on attitude change among a sample of African American women attending college. In Study 1 (N = 146), the affective message and female source produced the most positive change in condom use attitudes. Study 2 examined whether message type and source were associated with favorable condom attitudes in a community sample and whether these findings differed from a college sample. In recent years, a growing proportion of the population has moved into gated communities in response to an increasingly pandemic fear of crime. While a sizable body of research has addressed fear of crime and perceived safety in gated communities, few studies have investigated actual rates of victimization. The studies that do compare victimization in gated and non-gated communities tend to be localized assessments and present mixed findings on the effectiveness of community gating as a form of protection from crime.

Objectives: There is a dearth of studies examining the relationship between research output and other socio-demographic indicators in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates). Objectives: The objective of this study was to calculate the technicity index (TI) for hysterectomies at a tertiary care university hospital in Oman. Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of patients who had hysterectomies at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH), a tertiary care university hospital. Profiles were reviewed for all patients who had hysterectomies at SQUH in the period 2003–2009. The cumulative frequencies for all types of hysterectomies were tallied and the year-specific TI was calculated. Objectives: Body mass index (BMI), total body fat (TBF), and physical activity in relation to obesity and overweight prevalence among Omani students were studied. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 202 Omani students (101 males and 101 females) from Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) was carried out. Data were collected by interview using a structured questionnaire. Weight, TBF and physical activity score (PAS) were measured using TANITA scales, and height measured using a standardised measuring tape. Results: Subjects were classified based on BMI as: underweight (2.48%), normal weight (69.31%), overweight (26.73%) and obese (1.49%). According to TBF, 32.67% of students had low …

Tracheobronchopathia osteochondroplastica (TPO) is a rare, benign condition involving the trachea. TPO is characterised by osteocartilaginous nodules developing within the submuscosa of the trachea, sparing the posterior wall. We present the first documented case of TPO in Oman in a 25 year-old Omani male who presented with a recurrent, productive cough from which he had suffered throughout the previous two years. Diagnosis was made by characteristic computed tomography scan, bronchoscopic findings, and a histopathological examination.

In 2010, the National Science Foundation (NSF) implemented new guidelines for all scientists applying for grants. A Data Management Plan (DMP) is now required for all proposals in which data are created or gathered while working under the grant. Several organizations have produced templates and applications to assist with the construction of DMPs. The data plans provide a good overview of data processing and storage but do not provide any guidance for managing data during the research process. Large temporal hydrologic data sets can provide a rich insight to complex hydrologic and ecological systems. Complications arise when attempting to query …

Joints represent planes of discontinuity in homogeneous media. The purpose of this investigation is to model joints and determine the e\ufb00ects on waves as they propagate through joints in rock. Properties of interest include energy dissipation, energy transmission, and changes in peak stress and impulse as waves propagate through one or more joints. Rather than combining rock joints into the constitutive model of the parent rock as typically done, this research seeks to model joints discretely. As Composition and Rhetoric rose in disciplinary status and academic legitimacy the discourse practice of negation, the positioning of texts in oppositional binaries that set the “new” over the “old,” the “novel” over the “familiar,” became embedded in academic tradition, seeming to be an inherited part of scholarship instead of an individual’s rhetorical choice and deliberate ethos strategy. Isothermal Helium Flow Measurements Twrough A Rectangular Channel For A Wide Knudsen Range, John Anderson

The purpose of this experimental investigation is to measure the isothermal steady flow of Helium through a rectangular microchannel from the continuum to the free-molecular regime. The intention is to expand the measured Knudsen number range for rectangular cross section microchannels as compared with that presently found in in the literature. As presented, the Knudsen range for the experiments is 0.03 to overnearly 500. A dual tank accumulation technique was chosen for flow measurements which allows for very low flow rate measurements (<\u301610\u3017^(-13) kgs^(-1)). Experimental results were evaluated against analytical solutions for the continuum, slip, and free molecular regimes as well as a closed-form equation that would include any regime. Data was also compared to computer models using the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo method.

We present an experimental study that visualizes the effects of a planar shock front passing through air (or SF6) randomly seeded with glycol droplets or smoke particles. It was observed, using a high-speed multiple-CCD (charge coupled device) camera, that an instability occurs as the shock wave bypasses the slow-moving column of gas. This produced evident perturbation at the interface. The flow morphology of the gas column consists of a pair of counter-rotating vortices that develops downstream from the initial conditions as well as some secondary instabilities (in certain cases).
