Altered lipid metabolism underlies several major human diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, lipid metabolism pathophysiology remains poorly understood at the molecular level. Insulin is the primary stimulator of hepatic lipogenesis through activation of the SREBP-1c transcription factor. Here we identified cyclin-dependent kinase 8 (CDK8) and its regulatory partner cyclin C (CycC) as negative regulators of the lipogenic pathway in Drosophila, mammalian hepatocytes, and mouse liver. The inhibitory effect of CDK8 and CycC on de novo lipogenesis was mediated through CDK8 phosphorylation of nuclear SREBP-1c at a conserved threonine residue. Wireline high-speed networks have become a critical part of modern cyberinfra-structures and provide the base substrates to support a full range of higher-layer user services and applications. Indeed, a wide range of technologies have been deployed in these domains, ranging from ultra-fast Internet Protocol (IP) packet routing systems to multi-wavelength optical switching nodes. Today these setups provide immense levels of traffic scalability, reaching well into the 100s of gigabits/second and even terabits/second ranges. The requirements for deployable antenna systems on micro-satellites, specifically on the CubeSat platform, are ever changing. This thesis will address the possible antenna systems that would best be deployed on a CubeSat, with the major focus on the conical log-spiral antenna (CLSA) due to its frequency independent characteristics. The antenna design will then go beyond the published works of the CLSA to introduce a new feeding concept, a bottom fed CLSA. Necessity for this feeding rises out of limited deploying capabilities of the CubeSat platform, which is significantly smaller than the proposed antenna due to frequency constraints. This two wave panel study examined child self-regulation as a potential mediator of the relationship between marital attachment security in parents and anxiety in their adolescent child. Data for this study were taken from the two parent families in waves three and four of the Flourishing Families project which included 335 two-parent families with children between the ages of 14 and 16. Both parents and child completed the Novak and Clayton (2001) Self-regulation Scale with the child's self-regulation as the target, and both husbands and wives completed a modified version of the Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire (Fraley, Waller, & …

For a finite group G we study certain rings called k-S-rings, one for each non-negative integer k, where the 1-S-ring is the centralizer ring of G. These rings have the property that the (k+1)-S-ring determines the k-S-ring. We show that the 4-S-ring determines G when G is any group with finite classes. We show that the 3-S-ring determines G for any finite group G, thus giving an answer to a question of Brauer. We show the 2-characters defined by Frobenius and the extended 2-characters of Ken Johnson are characters of representations of the 2-S-ring of G. We find the character …

Language acquisition in the digital realm is currently being explored by members of the second language acquisition community. Social networks in particular are well suited to provide the modern language learner and educator with collaborative tools. This study explores the potential of the Facebook group utility in assisting university language learners from a variety of language proficiency levels in their language learning endeavors. Participants represented four different Spanish classes at the university level. The ecological and economic contributions made by mangroves have been well documented in recent decades, and these coastal forests have been the focus of increased attention in terms of conservation and restoration. One aspect that has recently drawn increased attention is the role of mangrove environments in the global carbon cycle, particularly for their high burial rates of organic carbon (OC), also known as “Blue Carbon”, that would otherwise contribute to increased atmospheric CO2 levels. Concrete is a complex material often used in civil engineering structures. This quasi-brittle material, when reinforced with steel, develops cohesive cracks under loading even though it has adequate strength to carry service loads. Concrete often cracks even before the application of load, due to temperature changes and shrinkage. The displacement field in the structure drastically changes as the cracks initiate and propagate. Thus, concrete fails to satisfy the most fundamental assumptions of continuum mechanics. To overcome the limitations of continuum mechanics, Silling introduced the peridynamic method in 1998. Resilient modulus (Mr) is a laboratory determined parameter, where a cylindrical specimen is subjected to dynamic axial stresses under confining stresses, while axial deformations are measured. By definition Mr is the ratio of the peak axial stress to the corresponding recoverable axial strain. Currently, there are two accepted laboratory testing protocols for determining Mr, namely AASHTO T 307 and NCHRP 1-28A. These two standards differ from one another in ways that are known to affect Mr, namely in location of load and deformation transducers. An economic crisis hit Ecuador during the final years of the 20th century. This crisis initiated a massive migration of Ecuadoreans mostly to Europe and the United States. The remittances migrants started sending back rapidly increased and soon represented an important share of the GDP. This became a new source of income (or the only one) for many households. The present research project analyzes, through the use of an instrumented probit model, how the probability of children attending school changes when the household receives remittances and when other variables are accounted for. A dilute gas Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter that occurs when a cloud of atoms in a potential are made cold and dense enough that they all occupy the potential's ground state. The onset of this phenomenon occurs when their de Broglie wavelength, $\Lambda = \sqrt{2 \pi \hbar^2/mk_BT}$, becomes comparable in size to the inter-particle spacing. A BEC is a macroscopic quantum object, since all atoms in the BEC are described by a single quantum wavefunction and, as such, is a fundamental quantum many-body system. Cave Paintings By Firelight is a single movement work composed for wind symphony. The piece revolves around an eight-note collection that is reduced to prime form (012356t). There is also a heavy emphasis on the pitch-classes C and F#. Many of the harmonies and melodies are symmetrical around these pitches in pitch-class space. Most of the melodic movement of the piece is found in the woodwinds which are juxtaposed against the relatively static brass with the percussion used to emphasize transitions into new large sections. The piece was greatly inspired by imagery. The main image for the piece is a …

Multi-core processors provide better performance when compared with their single-core equivalent. Recently, Networks-on-Chip (NoC) have emerged as a communication methodology for multi core chips. Network-on-Chip uses packet based communication for establishing a communication path between multiple cores connected via interconnects. Clock frequency, energy consumption and chip size are largely determined by these interconnects. According to the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS), in the next five years up to 80% of microprocessor power will be consumed by interconnects. When a worker sues an employer, the employer sometimes learns thereafter that the worker had committed some misconduct at the time of hire or while on the job. In those cases, most American work laws provide the employer with a defense that precludes employer liability, or at least limits remedies, if the employer shows that, had it known of the worker’s misconduct at the time of its allegedly wrongful act, it would have fired the worker because of that misconduct. Background:

Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are important and costly public health problems in the United States resulting from unprotected sexual intercourse. Risk factors for unplanned pregnancies and STIs (poverty, low educational attainment, homelessness, substance abuse, lack of health insurance, history of an abusive environment, and practice of commercial sex work) are especially high among women with a history of incarceration. Project CARE (Contraceptive Awareness and Reproductive Education) is designed to evaluate an innovative intervention, Motivational Interviewing with Computer Assistance (MICA), aimed at enhancing contraceptive initiation and maintenance among incarcerated women who do not want a pregnancy within …
