This paper provides some initial findings from a current longitudinal study that examines the implementation of a student-owned 1:1 laptop program in a school for boys in Perth, Western Australia. This research tracks 196 students, their families and associated teachers for a 3-year period (2010-2012). Underpinning this research is a mixed methods approach investigating how boys use their laptops for learning, teachers’ pedagogy and use of ICT, implementation differences between a junior (primary) and middle (secondary) school, and possible impact of the laptops on learning. The first compelling point Dominican illustrates is that private liberal arts universities can effectively serve the needs and interests of first-generation college students and students of color (respectively, 25% and 46% of our student body). This has been a deliberate commitment at Dominican, but it also demonstrates that broad-based and contextualized learning can be just as appealing and just as relevant as more narrow pre-professional programs to those students and families who are often under the most pressure to consider immediate return on their college investment. Many North American sesiid moths within Synanthodonini have been studied extensively because their feeding activity can cause detrimental economic and esthetic impacts to many commercially important ornamental and native plant species. Recent discoveries of nonnative clearwing moth pest introductions [e.g., Synanthedon myopaeformis (Borkh.)], reinforce the need for reliable and accurate molecular diagnostic tools that can be used by nontaxonomic experts, particularly when juvenile life stages are recovered from infested host-plant tissues. Agricultural systems are vulnerable to climate change (CC). However, by adjustments of their management schemes farmers can minimize negative impacts of global warming on their income. One possibility of assessing adaptation options of agricultural systems to CC is the use of bioeconomic models which link process-based crop growth with economic decision models. This research builds on standard ecological network analysis techniques in order to investigate the impact of removing species (nodes) on the remaining of the network species. The flow network is expressed as a system of dynamical equations such that the removal of one node has time-forward impacts on the remaining nodes. The approach allows one to determine the gain or loss experienced by each other compartment in the model and the time for such impact to occur. For the development of real-time control systems of integrated urbanwastewater systems (IUWS) fitting a model to measurement data is an importanttask. Generally, model complexity conflicts with computational demand. Theproblem increases when multi-criteria optimization is carried out. In this paper we describe an application of a GIS-based multi-criteria decision support web tool that models and evaluates relative changes in ecosystem services to policy and land management decisions. The Santa Cruz Watershed Ecosystem Portfolio (SCWEPM) was designed to provide credible forecasts of responses to ecosystem drivers and stressors and to illustrate the role of land use decisions on spatial and temporal distributions of ecosystem services within a binational (U.S. and Mexico) watershed. In the city of Berlin combined sewer overflows (CSO) can lead to severedepressions in dissolved oxygen (DO) of receiving urban rivers and hence to acutestress for the local fish fauna. To quantify CSO impacts and optimize sewermanagement strategies, a model-based planning instrument has been developed.It couples the urban drainage model InfoWorks CS which simulates hydraulics andpollutant transport in the sewer with the river water quality model QSim whichsimulates hydraulics, mass transport and various biogeochemical processes in thereceiving water body. Models that represent the integrated urban drainage system are neededto holistically assess and manage its performance. The evaluation of current and future land use and management impacts on ecosystem processes often requires the application of a wide range of specialized models covering different environmental research disciplines. We promote the newly developed Landscape Management Framework (LMF) as a way to facilitate and ease the consideration of land use and management actions within such integrated modeling approaches. A new software tool - Decision Making on Dredged Material (DM2) - for dredged material quality assessment and management is developed. Based on Spanish recommendations for dredged material management of 2008, it analyzes different lines of evidence of sediment contamination by metals and organic micro-pollutants. Particularly, chemical load in sediments is compared to the admissible concentration limits of these contaminants as adopted in Spain; sediment toxicity is estimated based on the responses of organisms to contaminant exposure. Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Personnel from Prewitt and Associates, Inc., conducted archeological site assessments and survey at Aquilla Lake from November to December 2010 in preparation for a pool raise planned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. The proposed pool raise could potentially raise the conservation pool level of the lake by 6.5 ft. Field investigations revisited and reevaluated 41 previously recorded sites and surveyed 10 previously unsurveyed areas (180 total acres) within the confines of the proposed 6.5-ft conservation pool raise. The investigations consolidated 8 of the 41 previously recorded sites into 3, therefore reassessments are given for 36 …

Nursing science research is at the intersection of the social and medical sciences and statistical developments in many different disciplines are relevant. A framework for nursing science statistics which recognizes and builds upon the statistical contributions from biostatistics, quantitative psychology, epidemiology, econometrics, survey research, computer science and statistics is presented. A broad eclectic framework is necessary to take advantage of new developments in statistical and research design methodology addressing specific problems common to a given area. A method of fabricating sol–gel quantum dot (QD) films is demonstrated, and their optical, structural and electrical properties are evaluated. The CdSe(ZnS) xerogel films remain quantum confined, yet are highly conductive (10−3 S cm−1). This approach provides a pathway for the exploitation of QD gels in optoelectronic applications.

A sense of relatedness is individuals' views about themselves as connected to others and worthy of love and respect from others. Using the Self-System Model of Motivational Development as the framework, this study was designed to examine associations of urban high-school girls' relatedness toward teachers and peers with their behavioral and emotional engagements in physical education. Participants (N = 184, ages 15-18) completed questionnaires assessing relevant psychological and behavioral constructs while their teachers also completed corresponding measures during classes. Regression analyses revealed that relatedness toward teachers and peers had direct and interactive roles in both behavioral and emotional engagements. …
