A Computational Study On The Influence Of Urban Morphology On Wind-Induced Outdoor Ventilation, Rubina Ramponi, Bert Blocken Jul 2012

A Computational Study On The Influence Of Urban Morphology On Wind-Induced Outdoor Ventilation, Rubina Ramponi, Bert Blocken

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Accurate modeling of urban wind flow is important for the assessment of the natural ventilation of the outdoor environment and therefore for outdoor air quality. Different geometrical levels of analysis can be used, ranging from regular arrays of obstacles to real and complex case studies. In order to avoid the complexity of real case studies and to obtain more generic results, regular arrays of obstacles represent a suitable level to study the relation between urban morphology and outdoor ventilation. This paper presents the first results of a numerical study with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) of isothermal wind flow in generic …

Assessment Of Phytoplankton Productivity Using Satellite Data For Peter The Great Gulf, Oksana Zhdanova, Alexander Abakumov Jul 2012

Assessment Of Phytoplankton Productivity Using Satellite Data For Peter The Great Gulf, Oksana Zhdanova, Alexander Abakumov

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The biological productivity of ecological systems is very important characteristic for study of the natural environment. For aquatic ecosystems the biological productivity can be determined on the base of phytoplankton productivity. The distribution of phytoplankton in a vertical column of water under the influence of sun intensity, temperature and mineral content is simulated. Change in the concentration of mineral substances and phytoplankton is influenced by diffusion. Photosynthetic activity radiation and temperature of water satisfy the climatic conditions typical of Peter the Great Bay. A remote sensing data probing the seas and oceans plays an important role in the study of …

Sensitivity Of Spatially Explicit Land-Use Logistic Regression Models To The Errors Land-Use Change Maps, Alexander V. Prishchepov, Daniel Müller, Van Butsic, Volker C. Radeloff Jul 2012

Sensitivity Of Spatially Explicit Land-Use Logistic Regression Models To The Errors Land-Use Change Maps, Alexander V. Prishchepov, Daniel Müller, Van Butsic, Volker C. Radeloff

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Land-use change (LUC) is a common process around the world and LUC models help elucidate LUC. Models are commonly parameterized with LUC maps derived from satellite imagery. However, such LUC maps have errors, and it is unclear how sensitive spatially explicit LUC models are to such errors. We studied the effects of errors maps on spatially explicit LUC logistic regression models of agricultural land abandonment within one Landsat footprint in Eastern Europe that covered the part of Lithuania. The selected footprint had six matching image dates (Spring, Summer and Fall) that were important to separate land-use classes for pre- (circa …

Lost In Translation - Mediating Between Distributed Environmental Resources., Patrick Maue, Marcell Roth

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Implementing distributed environmental modelling infrastructures supporting domain experts to discover, compose, share, and execute environmental models is subject of the ENVISION (Environmental Services Infrastructure With Ontologies) project. In this paper we focus on one specific aspect of distributed environmental models: how can we open up these infrastructures to include the wide range of data formats in the environmental modelling domain into the Web service compositions? We present the annotation pattern as solution to provide extensible resource descriptions based on flexible ontology languages. Model References link between different representations of resource descriptions, while Domain References link to terms in the common …

Drivers Of Change In Southern European Agriculture: Online Participatory Approaches For The Analysis Of Planned And Autonomous Adaptation Strategies, Dragana Bojovic, Laura Bonzanigo, Carlo Giupponi Jul 2012

Drivers Of Change In Southern European Agriculture: Online Participatory Approaches For The Analysis Of Planned And Autonomous Adaptation Strategies, Dragana Bojovic, Laura Bonzanigo, Carlo Giupponi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Together with socio-economic and policy changes, climate change deeply affects sustainable patterns of water management. The presented work explores how online participatory tools can be linked to a decision support system (DSS), in order to set up a web based DSS for assessment and evaluation of autonomous and planned water-saving adaptation strategies in irrigated production systems. Innovative online participatory tools are developed and tested. The paper presents online participation (eParticipation) as a means to establish communication with the main “agents” (farmers) of the socio-ecosystem of interest. This is composed of two phases: (i) assessment of farmers’ perceptions of ongoing changes …

A Possible Integration Of Multiple Paradigms Used In Integrated Assessment Modelling Of Climate Change, M. D. Gerst, P. Ding, R. B. Howarth, M. E. Borsuk Jul 2012

A Possible Integration Of Multiple Paradigms Used In Integrated Assessment Modelling Of Climate Change, M. D. Gerst, P. Ding, R. B. Howarth, M. E. Borsuk

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Most of the models used to analyze international climate policy treat the problem as if it operates on only a single level. This is the result of a reliance on integrated assessment models (IAMs) that, for reasons of analytical tractability, typically employ assumptions that allow the economy to be modeled as if it is managed by a single, utility-maximizing central planner without regard to the influence of either lower-level actors or international pressures. While game theoretic models have been used to study international negotiations, they generally do not consider feedback from domestic actors who have heterogeneous beliefs and vulnerability to …

Linking Social Simulation And Urban Water Modelling Tools To Support Adaptive Urban Water Management, Ifigeneia Koutiva, Christos Makropoulos Jul 2012

Linking Social Simulation And Urban Water Modelling Tools To Support Adaptive Urban Water Management, Ifigeneia Koutiva, Christos Makropoulos

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The sustainable evolution of urban areas requires the assessment of the imposed pressures and the estimation of the effect of alternative responses to the urban water resources system. Such estimation entails, to a large extent, uncertainties mainly due to the complex nature of the system and its interaction with society’s subjective beliefs and (rational or otherwise) decisions. These uncertainties may be better handled by employing an adaptive approach towards integrated urban water resources management but this approach necessitates the development of more sophisticated decision support tools able to simulate both the technical and social components of the complete socio-technical system. …

Phosphorus Use And Management Strategies: Exploring Scenarios Of Smallholder’S Soil Fertility, Food Production And Livelihood With A Multi-Agent System Model, Quang Bao Le, Roland W. Scholz, Roman Seidl, Quyet Manh Vu, Tien Minh Tran Jul 2012

Phosphorus Use And Management Strategies: Exploring Scenarios Of Smallholder’S Soil Fertility, Food Production And Livelihood With A Multi-Agent System Model, Quang Bao Le, Roland W. Scholz, Roman Seidl, Quyet Manh Vu, Tien Minh Tran

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Phosphorus (P) is a key nutrient for food production. However, excess P use, e.g. in form of inorganic fertilizer application, can lead to environmental pollution, biodiversity losses and low profitability. Continuous cultivation with underuse of P fertilizer results in low food productivity and soil degradation due to soil nutrient mining or soil erosion. The concern is most serious for smallholder farmers in developing countries whose food production and livelihood is tied directly to their access to and efficient use of P as key nutrient for plant growth. This paper introduces a multi-agent system modeling framework for assessing long-term impacts of …

Design Of A Software Framework Based On Geospatial Standards To Facilitate Environmental Modelling Workflows, Vanessa Watson, Kym S. Watson Jul 2012

Design Of A Software Framework Based On Geospatial Standards To Facilitate Environmental Modelling Workflows, Vanessa Watson, Kym S. Watson

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental modelling workflows are often tedious due to heterogeneity of data sources, types and formats. This paper discusses how a software framework based on Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards may facilitate the workflow steps and improve their flexibility by supporting data access, processing, and decision-making. The software framework is designed based on OGC standards, which can be realized in any modern programming language, to encapsulate processing algorithms (so called fusors) that fuse the environmental input data and run a model based computation. Such a software framework can improve the integration of new data sources into environmental applications as well as …

An Integrated Assessment Metamodel For Developing Adaptation Pathways For Sustainable Water Management In The Lower Rhine Delta, Marjolijn Haasnoot, Willem P. A. Van Deursen, Hans Middelkoop, Eelco Van Beek, Nanda Wijermans Jul 2012

An Integrated Assessment Metamodel For Developing Adaptation Pathways For Sustainable Water Management In The Lower Rhine Delta, Marjolijn Haasnoot, Willem P. A. Van Deursen, Hans Middelkoop, Eelco Van Beek, Nanda Wijermans

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Water management is increasingly challenged by pressures from population growth, sea level rise and potential climate change. Moreover, these developments are highly uncertain and change over time. The challenge is to develop strategies that are either robust - insensitive to the future - or flexible enough to adapt to changing conditions. Adaptation is not only determined by what is known or anticipated at present, but also by what will be experienced and learned while the future unfolds, and by policy responses to social and water events. As a result, an adaptation pathway emerges. Exploring adaptation pathways into the future will …

A Combined Neural Network And Optimal Interpolation Approach For Pm10 Forecast Over Po Valley, C. Carnevale, G. Finzi, E. Pisoni, M. Volta Jul 2012

A Combined Neural Network And Optimal Interpolation Approach For Pm10 Forecast Over Po Valley, C. Carnevale, G. Finzi, E. Pisoni, M. Volta

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Over recent years, the high levels of air pollution have become a quite important problem due to their direct impact on human health. Due to these health risks, EU directive (2008/50/EC) recommends member states to ensure that timely information about actual and forecasted levels of pollutants are provided to the public. In order to follow these guidelines, prevent critical episodes and inform the public, environmental authorities need fast and reliable forecasting systems. In literature, air pollution forecasting systems can be broadly split in two main category: (1) deterministic systems, solving mass-balance differential equations for a large number of pollutant in …

Operationalizing Expert Knowledge And Stakeholder Preferences In Integrated Natural Hazard Risk Assessment, Sebastian Scheuer, Dagmar Haase Jul 2012

Operationalizing Expert Knowledge And Stakeholder Preferences In Integrated Natural Hazard Risk Assessment, Sebastian Scheuer, Dagmar Haase

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Integrated natural hazard risk assessment aims at capturing the impacts and diverse consequences of natural hazards on different types of elements at risk (i.e. evaluation criteria). Typically, a risk assessor selects such evaluation criteria relying on expert knowledge. Moreover, legal frameworks, best-practice guidelines as well as manifold requirements by stakeholders should be considered in the assessment process. This is also true for risk mapping. In order to provide useful deliverables for stakeholders, their preferences in regard to content and visualization have to be borne in mind. Developing tools to assist risk assessment may focus on some or all of these …

Computer Assisted Dynamic Adaptive Policy Design For Sustainable Water Management In River Deltas In A Changing Environment, Jan Kwakkel, Marjolijn Haasnoot Jul 2012

Computer Assisted Dynamic Adaptive Policy Design For Sustainable Water Management In River Deltas In A Changing Environment, Jan Kwakkel, Marjolijn Haasnoot

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Sustainable water management in a changing environment full of uncertainty is a profound challenge. To deal with uncertainties, dynamic adaptive policies can be used. Such policies can change over time in response to how the future unfolds, to what we learn about the system, to changes in environment, and to changes in societal preferences. This paper presents a model driven approach that supports the development of dynamic adaptive policies, and illustrates the approach using a hypothetical case. The key idea of the approach is that the dynamic behavior of a fast and simple Integrated Assessment Meta Model (IAMM) is explored …

Simulating Shocks With The Hypercycles Model Of Economic Production, Christopher Watts, Claudia R. Binder Jul 2012

Simulating Shocks With The Hypercycles Model Of Economic Production, Christopher Watts, Claudia R. Binder

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Padgett’s hypercycles model of economic production (Padgett et al. 2003) is an agent-based simulation that demonstrates the emergence of novel forms of social organisation among limited-intelligence agents. In this paper we argue that it can be extended to explore issues of resilience and the responses to shocks in complex systems of agent-environment interactions. Based on learning by doing, a simple search heuristic enables a population of firms to adapt and find system states containing a collectively self-sustaining subset of firms with production rules and mix of materials in the environment. The self-sustaining systems Padgett finds persist in spite of variability …

Air Pollutant Dispersion From A Large Semi-Enclosed Stadium In An Urban Area: High-Resolution Cfd Modeling Versus Full-Scale Measurements, Twan Van Hooff, Bert Blocken Jul 2012

Air Pollutant Dispersion From A Large Semi-Enclosed Stadium In An Urban Area: High-Resolution Cfd Modeling Versus Full-Scale Measurements, Twan Van Hooff, Bert Blocken

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

High-resolution CFD simulations and full-scale measurements have been performed to assess the dispersion of air pollutants (CO2) from the large semi-enclosed Amsterdam ArenA football stadium. The dispersion process is driven by natural ventilation by the urban wind flow and by buoyancy, and by the interaction between outdoor wind flow and indoor airflow which are only connected by the relatively small ventilation openings in the stadium facade. The CFD simulations are performed with the 3D Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with the realizable k-e model to provide closure. The full-scale measurements include reference wind speed, wind direction, and outdoor and indoor air …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Over the past years several studies have explored future land use trends for Europe. This paper presents a comparison of six land use studies for Europe that explore land use changes until 2020/2030. We compared these studies with respect to qualitative as well as quantitative aspects. The qualitative analysis shows that many studies focus on agricultural land uses and therefore draw on detailed agricultural models, while only few include urban developments. The purpose of about half of the studies is to provide land use outlooks, while the other half used scenarios to test the behaviour of scientific models or show …

Simulation Of Resilience Of An Insurance System To Flood Risk, F. Grelot, Olivier Barreteau

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The aim of this communication is to discuss the benefit of agent-based modelling to characterize the resilience of French insurance system to flood risk to extreme events. We first characterize the ”Cat Nat” system, the French system to manage recovery costs after major natural disasters. We then described the CatNatABM model. The main purpose of this model is to explore feedbacks between the dynamics of households settlement and the viability of ”Cat Nat” system. This behavior based model is meant “as simple as suitable” to capture main feedbacks of the system, with the purpose of enriching it gradually. Outputs of …

Linking The Grs Photochemical Scheme With The Daumod Urban Atmospheric Dispersion Model, Andrea L. Pineda Rojas, Laura E. Venegas

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The DAUMOD model is a simple urban scale atmospheric dispersion model which was originally developed to estimate inert air pollutant ground-level background concentrations resulting from a great number of area emission sources. The model has been tested against observations from Buenos Aires and different cities of Europe and the US, and has been extensively used during the past two decades to study the air pollution related to NOx species in the city of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas. The Generic Reaction Set (GRS) constitutes a simplified scheme of the most complete photochemical mechanisms. Due to its simplicity and its ability …

The Agesgui Geospatial Simulation System For Environmental Model Application And Evaluation, James C. Ascough Ii, Olaf David, Shilpa V. Murthy

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Practical decision making in spatially-distributed environmental assessment and management is increasingly being based on environmental process-based models linked to geographical information systems (GIS). Furthermore, powerful computers and Internet-accessible assessment tools are providing much greater public access to, and use of, environmental models and geospatial data. This paper provides an overview of the AgESGUI (AgroEcoSystem Graphical User Interface) geospatial simulation system for environmental model application and evaluation. AgESGUI currently provides access to four environmental models: (1) AgroEcoSystem-Watershed (AgES-W), (2) Nitrate Leaching and Economic Analysis Package (NLEAP) GIS/NT, (3) Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS), and (4) Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). AgESGUI …

Participatory Land Use Modeling With Bayesian Networks: A Focus On Subjective Validation, Enrico Celio, Sibyl H. Brunner, Adrienne Grêt-Regamey Jul 2012

Participatory Land Use Modeling With Bayesian Networks: A Focus On Subjective Validation, Enrico Celio, Sibyl H. Brunner, Adrienne Grêt-Regamey

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Taking into account land use models in spatial planning processes would be a valuable support for facilitating the development and the acceptance of innovative land use management strategies. But, the utilization of such models in spatial planning processes is rarely done. One condition for implementation is trust and credibility in the model, which can be increased through validation. We argue that subjective validation can be a major contribution to efforts advancing the implementation of models. The presented land use model applies Bayesian networks (BN) and incorporates secondary data as well as local actors’ characteristics. Stakeholders from the study area and …

Breathing New Life Into Legacy Integrated Surface Groundwater Models Using Gis-Based Adaptive Mesh, Hydrology Refinement And Data Mapping Tools, N. W. T. Quinn, Thomas J. Heinzer, M. Diane Williams Jul 2012

Breathing New Life Into Legacy Integrated Surface Groundwater Models Using Gis-Based Adaptive Mesh, Hydrology Refinement And Data Mapping Tools, N. W. T. Quinn, Thomas J. Heinzer, M. Diane Williams

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In a time of fiscal restraint and with environmental project funding in decline there is an increased interest in revisiting past modeling studies and improving upon legacy models rather than beginning the development process again from scratch. This trend coincides with a significant increase in the computing and analytical power of public domain and commercial GIS systems and the ability to tackle new problems through the availability of code to support customized applications. The paper describes GIS-based analytical tools developed to support the calibration and application of integrated groundwater and surface water models WESTSIM and C2VSIM (based on the IWFM …

Uncertainty Propagation Between Web Services – A Case Study Using The Ehabitat Wps To Identify Unique Ecosystems, Michael Schulz, Jon Olav Skøien, Lydia Gerharz, Grégoire Dubois, Edzer Pebesma Jul 2012

Uncertainty Propagation Between Web Services – A Case Study Using The Ehabitat Wps To Identify Unique Ecosystems, Michael Schulz, Jon Olav Skøien, Lydia Gerharz, Grégoire Dubois, Edzer Pebesma

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Protected areas (PAs) are designed to protect ecosystems and their associated species against anthropogenic threats. When assessing the importance of the current network of PAs, and when considering new areas which should be protected, one of the criteria is the uniqueness of the ecosystems found inside the existing or planned PA when compared to other parks. As a helping tool for park managers and potential funders, eHabitat has been designed using the Open Geospatial Consortiums (OGC) Web Processing Service (WPS) interface specification. It allows end-users to compute, using different data and models, the likelihood of finding ecosystems with similar properties, …
