In March 2011, Special Collections and Archives (SCA) at Towson University launched a departmental Facebook page in conjunction with a modest redesign of our webpages. Housed in the Albert S. Cook Library, SCA was established in 1970 and primarily contains records of the university that date back to its opening in January 1866 as the Maryland State Normal School. Because our webpages are relatively static and part of the library’s website, Facebook is used as a storefront, if you will, for communicating dynamic and engaging content.

Background

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) induces secondary tissue damage that is associated with astrogliosis and inflammation. We previously reported that acute upregulation of a cluster of cell-cycle-related genes contributes to post-mitotic cell death and secondary damage after SCI. However, it remains unclear whether cell cycle activation continues more chronically and contributes to more delayed glial change. Here we examined expression of cell cycle-related proteins up to 4 months following SCI, as well as the effects of the selective cyclin-dependent kinase (CDKs) inhibitor CR8, on astrogliosis and microglial activation in a rat SCI contusion model.

Paired-like homeodomain transcription factor 1 (PITX1) was specifically up-regulated in patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) by comparing the genome-wide mRNA expression profiles of 12 neuromuscular disorders. In addition, it is the only known direct transcriptional target of the double homeobox protein 4 (DUX4) of which aberrant expression has been shown to be the cause of FSHD. To bring insights into neurofibroma biochemistry, a comprehensive secretome analysis was performed on cultured human primary Schwann cells isolated from surgically resected plexiform neurofibroma and from normal nerve tissue. Using a combination of SDS-PAGE and high precision LC-MS/MS, 907 proteins were confidently identified in the conditioned media of Schwann cell cultures combined. Label free proteome profiling revealed consistent release of high levels of 22 proteins by the four biological replicates of NF1 Schwann cell cultures relative to the two normal Schwann cell cultures. Inversely, 9 proteins displayed decreased levels in the conditioned media of NF1 relative to normal Schwann cells. …

Low Risk Associated With Most Teenage Sexting: A Study Of 617 18-Year-Olds, Elizabeth Englander

This report describes research conducted in 2011 and 2012 on 617 subjects, 30% of whom reported sexting. The report details the frequency of sexting behaviors as well as the relationship between coerced and non-coerced sexting, sexting and gender differences, characteristics of sexters, and data on risk of discovery and social conflict following engaging in sexting. The study revealed that most risk associated with sexting is experienced by youth who are coerced into sexting; they are more impacted emotionally by the experience, and are more likely to have a prior victimization. International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Classification trees are valuable data mining tools, but sometimes they lack generality and flexibility. The idea described in this paper is to increase the generality of classification trees by deriving a fuzzy inferential engine from its hierarchical structure. The paper describes the steps through which the tree structure is decomposed and translated into fuzzy rules. To obtain a complete inferential system fuzzy memberships are then added and optimized. The combined algorithm is demonstrated with classification examples and the improvements with respect to the original tree are discussed.

Understanding local land-use trajectories is of vital importance for designing and implementing REDD+ projects. But such understanding is often marred by difficulties to relate to the effects of broad-scale underlying causes on local land-use responses. In this research, we used participatory data collection methods to calibrate Bayesian networks in order to study land-use change at the household and village level. We extracted historic land-use change trajectories from focus group discussions to identify the underlying causes of major land-use transitions with a focus on changes in forest cover and forest quality.
