Through a series of individual ethnographic interviews and focus groups, I explored the expectations and anticipations of middle and high school special education teachers as they carry out their professional charge of educating their students with intellectual disability for lives in the least restrictive environment, including possible adult roles as partners and parents. This study examined the choices teachers make, including teaching curriculum and professional responsibility, as they approach their professional duties in educating their students with ID for life beyond the classroom. In New Mexico and southern Colorado, one such strategy is the acequia irrigation system, which serves the dual purpose of delivering water and shaping community. This professional project provides a synthesis of existing knowledge with respect to acequias, and develops a tool, the Acequia Functionality Assessment, for evaluation of factors that contribute to the operation of acequias. Thermoelectric power generation relies on the creation of a temperature difference between the heat source and heat sink. Most often the heat sink is water which means that power generation requires significant quantities of water. Inland power plants use fresh water, a resource that is becoming increasingly limited in the United States. Thermoelectric plants currently supply nearly 90% of the US demand for electricity. The Sanitary Waste System (SWS) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is an extended-air, activated sludge wastewater treatment facility that is designed to treat 0.6 million gallons per day (MGD). However, the facility rarely receives more than 0.3 MGD and occasionally less than 0.1 MGD. Lack of sufficient flow and organic concentration into SWS, particularly on weekends and holidays, results in an inconsistent and often very low biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). Shortage of organic material leads to routine operation weaknesses and leaves SWS vulnerable to significant problems resulting from small amounts of toxic influents. This report describes the design of a water distribution system for the village of Kpandu Dafor. The water distribution system consists of the source of water, four designs of the distribution system, water-storage tank, septic tank systems, and chlorination system. The source of water was one of the three boreholes that can provide water at 70 or 80 liters per minute (Lpm). EPANET was used to develop the four different pipe designs for the water distribution system. The Town of Buena Vista (Town) has a limited water supply, although Cottonwood Creek runs through the center of Town and the Arkansas River borders the Town to the east. The Towns water rights portfolio is entirely on Cottonwood Creek, and includes a reliable 10 cubic feet per second (cfs), or 6.46 million gallons per day (MGD) for the months of October to March, but only 3.88 cfs (2.51 MGD) senior water rights from April to September, which coincides with irrigation season. Stream restoration is an opportunity to recover a substantial amount of lost ecosystem structure and function. This may be particularly beneficial for perennial streams in semi-arid regions because of the striking differences in productivity and biodiversity between the riparian corridor and surrounding uplands. We develop a plan to restore floodplain connectivity along a channelized reach of the unregulated Upper Gila River in southwestern New Mexico, and evaluate its potential to provide additional aquatic habitat. Throughout the Southwest, non-native phreatophytes such as saltcedar have rapidly replaced native cottonwoods along river corridors. The USDA Forest Service (USFS)Fuels Reduction Study (FRS) is an effort to quantify the effects of the removal of non-native riparian vegetation on multiple parameters of riparian ecology, including groundwater variation over time. Here, 8 years of measurements from 12 wells at 5 research sites in the Middle Rio Grande riparian corridor (bosque) of Albuquerque area are considered. A growing body of work demonstrates that the brain responds similarly to physical and social injury. Both experiences are associated with activity in the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and anterior insula. This dual functionality of the dACC and anterior insula underscores the evolutionary importance of maintaining interpersonal bonds. Despite the weight that evolution has placed on social injury, the pain response to social rejection varies substantially across individuals. For example, work from our lab demonstrated that the brain's social pain response is moderated by attachment style: anxious-attachment was associated with greater intensity and avoidant-attachment was associated with less intensity …

BACKGROUND: Many aging changes seem similar to those elicited by sleep-deprivation and psychosocial stress. Further, sleep architecture changes with age suggest an age-related loss of sleep. Here, we hypothesized that sleep deprivation in young subjects would elicit both stress and aging-like transcriptional responses.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: F344 rats were divided into control and sleep deprivation groups. Body weight, adrenal weight, corticosterone level and hippocampal CA1 transcriptional profiles were measured. A second group of animals was exposed to novel environment stress (NES), and their hippocampal transcriptional profiles measured. There is strong interest in the development of dynamically reconfigurable systems that can meet real-time constraints in energy/power-performance-accuracy (EPA/PPA). In this dissertation, I introduce a framework for implementing dynamically reconfigurable digital signal, image, and video processing systems. The basic idea is to first generate a collection of Pareto-optimal realizations in the EPA/PPA space. Dynamic EPA/PPA management is then achieved by selecting the Pareto-optimal implementations that can meet the real-time constraints. The systems are then demonstrated using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) and dynamic frequency control on FPGAs. The purpose of this study was to examine what we can learn when we teach Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) to incarcerated youths. Select incarcerate males who had been engaged in individual RMA sessions were brought together for one final CRMA group, which constituted a collaborative RMA session. The researcher set out to discover how RMA influenced their perceptions about the reading process and their emerging confidence in themselves as readers. Experiments were performed at the horizontal shock tube facility at Los Alamos National Laboratory to study the effect of incident shock Mach number (M) on the development of the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability after a shock wave impulsively accelerates a varicose-perturbed, heavy-gas curtain (air-SF6-air). Three cases of incident shock strength were experimentally investigated: M = 1.21, 1.36, and 1.50. The resulting instability and subsequent fluid mixing is measured using simultaneous quantitative Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) and Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) for the first time in a Richtmyer-Meshkov Mach number study, while exceptional experimental repeatability allows for isolation of Mach number effects. Observational data are analyzed and decomposed to reveal internal ocean waves and their interactions with one another. Particularly, the interaction of small-scale internal waves with a large inertia wave packet is examined. Using the governing internal wave equations, an analysis is made of the energy propagation of a small scale internal wave with a large-scale inertia wave. With that, an assessment is made of the frequency of occurrence of various encounter types. Next, the possibility of energy transfer during an interaction is explored. With evidence growing of the negative impact materialism exerts on the individual and the marital relationship, this study examines the effects of materialism on the marital relationship as well as the potential moderating effects of forgiveness. Specifically examined is the association between materialism and marital instability considering trait forgiveness as a potential moderating variable. The data for this study were taken from the Flourishing Families Project. Materialism, forgiveness, and marital instability measures with actor effects, partner effects, and moderation effects are analyzed. Research institutions around the globe are developing phased array feed (PAF) systems for wide-field L-band radio astronomical observations. PAFs offer faster survey speeds and larger fields of view than standard single-pixel feeds, which enable rapid sky surveys and significantly increased scientific capability. Because deep space astronomical signals are inherently weak, PAF systems must meet stringent noise and sensitivity requirements. Berglund and Hubsch proposed that for a certain family of singularities W, the so called "transposed" singularity WT should be the mirror partner of W. cite{BH} The techniques for constructing the orbifold LG models to test this conjecture were developed by FJR in cite{FJR} with a cohomological field theory generalized from the study of r-spin curves. This work shows the results of modeling and optimizing pentahedron-shaped covers for application on a passive solar still. While modeling under the assumption of clear weather in Provo, Utah, United States of America, it was found that two main geometries resulted: A single slope still with fully vertical back and sidewalls and a south face tilted at 37.1°, absorbing a total of 8.98 megajoules of direct solar radiation. A half-pyramid shaped cover with vertical backwall, sidewalls tilted in at 60.6°, and a south face tilted in at 41.5°, absorbing 9.34 megajoules of direct solar radiation.With improved covers, solar radiation absorbed …

Protein electrical properties have been studied using dielectric relaxation measurements throughout the past century. These measurements have advanced both the theory and practice of liquid dielectric spectroscopy and have contributed to understanding of protein structure and function. In this dissertation, the relationship between permittivity measurements and underlying molecular mechanisms is explored. Also presented is a method to take molecular structures from the Protein Data Bank and subsequently estimate the charge distribution and dielectric relaxation properties of the proteins in solution.
