Postmodern Trickster Strands In Shamanic Worlds, Jürgen W. Kremer
Postmodern Trickster Strands In Shamanic Worlds, Jürgen W. Kremer
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
This essay explores socio-philosophical meanings of shamanic cultures and practices and
their affirmation and revival. What is their potential significance for humanity’s future? I
argue that shamanism engages humans in practices that put us potentially at the center of
our creativity and creative visioning. The trickster figure, a pervasive indigenous presence,
so often seems pivotal in this process and this pervasively male figure plays an important
part in this regenerative interpretation of postmodernism; in fact, postmodernism can be
understood as trickster. Just like the trickster, the nature of postmodernism is ambiguous.
I explore this ambiguity and suggest that shamanic practices …

Supporting Preemptive Task Executions And Memory Copies In Gpgpus, Kyoung-Don Kang, Can Basaran
Supporting Preemptive Task Executions And Memory Copies In Gpgpus, Kyoung-Don Kang, Can Basaran
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
GPGPUs (General Purpose Graphic Processing Units) provide massive computational power. However, applying GPGPU technology to real-time computing is challenging due to the non-preemptive nature of GPGPUs. Especially, a job running in a GPGPU or a data copy between a GPGPU and CPU is non-preemptive. As a result, a high priority job arriving in the middle of a low priority job execution or memory copy suffers from priority inversion. To address the problem, we present a new lightweight approach to supporting preemptive memory copies and job executions in GPGPUs. Moreover, in our approach, a GPGPU job and memory copy between a …

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports
Our study focused on the perspective of homeowner decision-making in response to home energy audits, combined with attention to the quality of the recommendations that homeowners receive, as well as the perspectives of some key industry actors on auditing and home energy labels. Unlike a program evaluation, the research was not designed to answer detailed questions about program effectiveness in terms of costs, savings, or process, nor was it designed to provide direct answers to questions of how to get people to do more audits or more retrofits. Rather it “steps back” toward a better understanding of more basic questions …

Biology And Stock Status Of Inshore Demersal Scalefish Indicator Species In The Gascoyne Coast Bioregion, Ross Marriott, Gary Jackson, Rodney Cj Lenanton, Carli Telfer, Eva Lai, Peter Stephenson, David Adams, Jeffrey Norriss
Fisheries Research Reports
(114°50'E), includes the iconic Shark Bay and Ningaloo World Heritage areas plus the regional centre of Carnarvon and coastal towns of Denham, Coral Bay and Exmouth. The Gascoyne Bioregion is a transition zone between tropical and temperate waters and supports a diverse range of commercial invertebrate and scalefish fisheries and provides a large variety of recreational fishing opportunities. This report investigates the stock status of the inshore demersal scalefish “suite” of species for the Gascoyne region. These bottom dwelling fish are primarily taken by line fishing in waters of 20-250 m depth by both the commercial and recreational sectors.

Impact Of A Nurse Residency Program On First-Year Retention Rates For New Graduate Nurses, Cathern S. Velasquez
Impact Of A Nurse Residency Program On First-Year Retention Rates For New Graduate Nurses, Cathern S. Velasquez
Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)
The purpose of this DNP Capstone Project was to explore if participation in a Nurse Residency Program would positively impact the retention rate of the new graduate nurse population, during the initial year of clinical practice in the academic medical center care setting. The goals of the project were to successfully implement a Nurse Residency Program in the academic medical center practice setting, to measure participant satisfaction with the level of support the program would provide during the initial year of practice, and increase the first year retention rate for this population of nurses. This was accomplished by examining data …

Catch Rates With Variable Strength Circle Hooks In The Hawaii-Based Tuna Longline Fishery, Keith A. Bigelow, David W. Kerstetter, Matthew G. Dancho, Jamie A. Marchetti
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
The Hawaii-based deep-set longline fleet targets bigeye tuna [Thunnus obesus (Lowe, 1839)] and infrequently takes false killer whales [FKW , Pseudorca crassidens (Owen, 1846)] as bycatch. From 2004 to 2008 with 20%–26% observer coverage, nine mortalities of and serious injuries to FKW were documented in the deep-set fishery in the Hawaii EE Z, yielding a mean take estimate of 7.3 animals yr−1. Weak hook technology can utilize the size disparity between target and other species to promote the release of larger non-target species. Four vessels tested the catch efficacy and size selectivity of 15/0 “strong” circle hooks …
Effects Of Natural Resource Abundance On Institutions: Which, Where And When?, Luisa Blanco, Jeffrey Nugent, Graham Veenstra
Effects Of Natural Resource Abundance On Institutions: Which, Where And When?, Luisa Blanco, Jeffrey Nugent, Graham Veenstra
School of Public Policy Working Papers
Much research has gone into the effects of oil and other natural resources on growth in which political institutions are often seen as the link between the two. Since institutions are difficult to measure and change very slowly over time, the analysis has largely been confined to cross-country comparisons, most frequently investigating the effects on levels of democracy. This paper builds on recent analyses of the effects of oil endowments, prices and exports on democracy to examine the effects on several different types of institutional change, making use of panel data on over 100 countries between 1975 and 2005 wherever …

Membership Functions Or Alpha-Cuts? Algorithmic (Constructivist) Analysis Justifies An Interval Approach, Vladik Kreinovich
Membership Functions Or Alpha-Cuts? Algorithmic (Constructivist) Analysis Justifies An Interval Approach, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In his pioneering papers, Igor Zaslavsky started an algorithmic (constructivist) analysis of fuzzy logic. In this paper, we extend this analysis to fuzzy mathematics and fuzzy data processing. Specifically, we show that the two mathematically equivalent representations of a fuzzy number -- by a membership function and by alpha-cuts -- are not algorithmically equivalent, and only the alpha-cut representation enables us to efficiently process fuzzy data.
