Efficiency in the presentation of a Latin text and its study-aids is the key to assisting intermediate students, who frequently become overwhelmed with the amount of vocabulary and grammar that needs to be simultaneously understood in order to read with any accuracy. This text breaks down the first book of Caesar's Bellum Gallicum in both a visual and a conceptual manner to aid students in learning intermediate Latin efficiently. We report a set of measurements of inclusive invariant p T differential cross sections of Λ0, Λ ̄0, Ξ ±, and Ω ± hyperons reconstructed in the central region with pseudorapidity |η|/c. Events are collected with a minimum-bias trigger in pp̄ collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV using the CDF II detector at the Tevatron Collider. As p T increases, the slopes of the differential cross sections of the three particles are similar, which could indicate a universality of the particle production in p T. The invariant differential cross sections are also presented for different charged-particle multiplicity intervals. …

On Sport and Society

After reading the summaries and commentaries on the Freeh Report detailing the elements of scandal at Penn State University, I am surprised that I am surprised by what has been revealed. My cynicism after nearly a half century of involvement with administrators at institutions of higher education and bloated athletic programs should have left me immune to both the surprise and disgust that this affair had evoked in me. What has not surprised me is the deviousness of the principal players in this scandal, the cynicism with which they approached the issues, and the continuing reaction to it all.

The need for accurate intelligence concerning possible terrorist attacks, spies, and other hostile military type actions, whether it be at home or abroad, remains of critical importance to the U.S. Intelligence Community. In this context, this paper focuses directly on the foundational aspects of covert communication networks and how they may be formed by groups or organizations such as al-Qaeda, jihadists, insurgents, etc. using spy tradecraft, cryptography and the language of Modern Standard Arabic. Clear, physical models or phantoms are needed for particle image velocimetry (PIV) to accurately record fluid velocities within complex geometries including anatomical structures. Based on Karina Arcaute’s work on “Complex Silicon Cardiovascular Models Manufactured Using a Dip-Spin Coating Technique”, a box casting technique was developed to provide the most effective phantom for testing. The phantom is required to be free of visual obstructions, thus allowing a CCD camera to capture accurate velocity readings. The United States accounts for 16% of all Alzheimer’s disease (AD) cases. The margin of elderly population increasing, due to the baby boomer generation, also contributes greatly to the increase in neurodegenerative diseases. This rise in neurodegenerative disease highlights the importance of research and its potential ability to alleviate financial health burdens as well creating protection for younger generations. In order to prevent misfolded proteins from aggregating and becoming insoluble, we are developing a chaperonin-mediated protein refolding assay that makes use of an easily traceable protein. Chaperonins function by providing a protective enclosed chamber for a protein to fold without interference from cellular component with the cytoplasm. To our knowledge, the inner workings of the chaperonin and its facilitation of protein folding are complicated but can be traced by monitoring ATP. Tracing this reaction, however, requires that the product of hydrolysis (inorganic phosphate) react with a second substrate to produce a product that can be observed by absorption of …

Bacterial meningitis is a severe bacterial infection that can become fatal within 24 hours of symptom onset. The most common detection methods include gram stain and cell culture, which are either not reliable, time-consuming or require expensive equipment and trained personnel. In a third world setting, having a reliable and low-cost diagnostic tool for detection of meningitis is therefore crucial. Our project then, is to allow for integrated DNA amplification, and easy to read colorimetric indicators in one PDMS/paper hybrid microfluidic device. The recent emergence of personal 3D printers (i.e., systems that cost $5,000 or less) has engaged a new class of users including hobbyists, tinkerers, entrepreneurs, and do-it-yourselfers. Over 20,000 personal 3D printers were sold in 2011, and thus there is a need for users to understand the cost and performance of personal 3D printers as compared to low-cost professional-grade machines (i.e., systems that cost between $5,000 and $20,000). The cost, process time, material usage, and dimensional accuracy was assessed for select personal 3D printers and low-cost professional-grade systems. The study showed that the laminated object manufacturing (LOM) printer generated 80% …

Pupil Size As A Physiological Correlate For Facilitatory And Inhibitory Effects In Masked Priming, Jason Geller

Two studies examined the effects of word (study 1) and nonword (study 2) primes in word recognition, utilizing a masked priming procedure (Forster & Davis, 1984). The primary objective of both studies was to replicate the results obtained by Davis and Lupker (2006)—that is, inhibition from related word primes and facilitation for nonword primes—using a common dependent measure, reaction time, and a measure not yet utilized in the word recognition literature—pupil dilation. Study 1 found nominal evidence corroborating the inhibitory nature of word primes. In the RTs analysis, only word frequency effects arose. Further, pupil dilation analysis did not show …
