Disease detection in historical samples currently relies on DNA extraction and amplification, or immunoassays. These techniques only establish pathogen presence rather than active disease. We report the first use of shotgun proteomics to detect the protein expression profile of buccal swabs and cloth samples from two 500-year-old Andean mummies. The profile of one of the mummies is consistent with immune system response to severe pulmonary bacterial infection at the time of death. Presence of a probably pathogenic Mycobacterium sp. in one buccal swab was confirmed by DNA amplification, sequencing, and phylogenetic analyses. An automated SPS-GC-TCD has been optimized to determine hydrogen production in light driven synthesis reactions while operating in real time and being capable of multiple analysis per hour. The SPS-GC-TCD method incorporates two sample loops on a valve, one for a check standard and the other for the sample, eliminating many sources of error associated with gas sampling and allowing for automated calibration during each analytical run. Gas samples containing hydrogen in a percent volume concentration were analyzed and method detection limit (MDL), accuracy and precision measurments have been conducted. For example, a surface functionalized with photochromic molecules can reversibly change its polarity, conductivity, or absorption properties. This background lead to the introduction of the Capital Works Management Framework in 2007 which aimed to support the certainty of outcome in terms of cost and quality, as well as improved risk management, through the implementation of fixed price contracts. Our knowledge of beetle cytochrome P450 (CYP) genes was primarily obtained from studies of the model beetle and grain pest Tribolium castaneum.To gain additional insight into beetle CYPs and ultimately to inform our understanding of beetle CYP evolution, we identified and annotated all of the CYP genes present in a new draft genome of Harmonia axyridis by using traditional and automated methods for gene annotation. Overall, we identified somewhat fewer CYPs in H. axyridis (at least 94 genes and 3 pseudo genes representing 17 families and 42 subfamilies) compared to the number of of known CYPs in T. castaneum (137 …

Overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines in the CNS has been implicated as a key contributor to pathophysiology progression in Alzheimer's disease (AD), and extensive studies with animal models have shown that selective suppression of excessive glial proinflammatory cytokines can improve neurologic outcomes. The prior art, therefore, raises the logical postulation that intervention with drugs targeting dysregulated glial proinflammatory cytokine production might be effective disease-modifying therapeutics if used in the appropriate biological time window. In this paper, we propose a master-slave SoC structure composed of an ARM7-TDMI and a co-processor for Mahala Nobis distance calculation. the SoC was implemented on an Actel ProASIC series M7A3P1000 FPGA. Furthermore, we implement a HMM based speech recognition system based on this SoC. Compared with the conventional ASIC co-processor and slave SoC structure, the new master-slave structure reduces the number of SRAM access and improves the bus efficiency. Experiment results show that with 1.40s Chinese speech feixi and 24MHz clock, the processing time of the M-S SoC system is 1.85s, a 64.12% reduction compared with the software implement …

In 1999, The EPA published The Stormwater Phase II rule, which instituted the implementation of "techniques, measures or structural control to manage and improve the quality of stormwater runoff" otherwise known as Best Management Practices (BMP). These strategies are designed to address one or more of three factors; flow control, pollutant removal, and pollutant source removal. As part of the list of techniques associated with BMP's, one in particular has become a more strategic approach that mimics predevelopment hydrology (EPA, 2012). Chameleons are an understudied taxon facing many threats, including collection for the international pet trade and habitat loss and fragmentation. A recent field study reports a highly female-biased sex ratio in the Eastern Arc Endemic Usambara three horned chameleon, Trioceros deremensis, a large, sexually dimorphic species. This species is collected for the pet trade, and local collectors report males bring a higher price because only this sex has horns. Thus, sex ratios may vary due to differential rates of survival or harvesting. Alternatively, they may simply appear to be skewed if differences in habitat use biases detection of the sexes. …

In the past decade, GaN-based nitrides have had a considerable impact in solid state lighting and high speed high power devices. InGaN-based LEDs have been widely used for all types of displays in TVs, computers, cell phones, etc. More and more high power LEDs have also been introduced in general lighting market.
