The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) is among the most commonly used English-language neuropsychological tests of verbal learning and memory. Previous research supports the validity and clinical utility of adaptations of the RAVLT into many diverse languages. In the United States, Hispanics represent the largest and fastest-growing ethnic minority group. As the Hispanic populace continues to grow, so does the need for empirically validated Spanish-language neuropsychological measures. The Effect Of Casino Tax Policy On Short-Run Gaming Development, Kahlil Philander

This study examines the effect of casino tax rate structure on investment by casino operators. Using a panel data set consisting of all states with legal commercial casino gambling from 1998 to 2009, a fixed-effect model with two-stage least squares is estimated to examine the effect of gambling taxes on firms' short-run behavior. The study finds that maximum casino tax rates decrease casino employment, with an estimated average elasticity of -0.5. This result is noted to be robust to several different model specifications and data subsets. No robust relationship is found between maximum tax rates and casino wages. No significant …

In this thesis, we describe a postprocessing system on Optical Character Recognition(OCR) generated text. Second Order Hidden Markov Model (HMM) approach is used to detect and correct the OCR related errors. The reason for choosing the 2nd order HMM is to keep track of the bigrams so that the model can represent the system more accurately. Based on experiments with training data of 159,733 characters and testing of 5,688 characters, the model was able to correct 43.38 % of the errors with a precision of 75.34 %. Little work has been done to examine the effects those policies have had on the populace. This project examines the congressional politics associated with legislation on skilled foreign workers, specifically the H-1B visa which was created by the Immigration Act of 1990. It attempts to explain why legislative policies were successful on a small scale between 1998 and 2004 and completely unsuccessful after 2004.

The two main kinds of high definition television video formats broadcast in the United States are 1080i and 720p. Both formats are claimed to have advantages and disadvantages relative to the other format. However, there has been little academic research to determine viewer preferences of these formats, and whether the stated claims about each format's strengths and weaknesses are valid. This thesis addresses this lack of research by employing an experiment to determine viewer perceptions and preferences of these two high definition formats.

During repeating sequences of low (A) and high (B) tones in an "...ABAB..." pattern, the likelihood of hearing two separate streams ("streaming") increases with more repetitions of the patterns, a phenomenon referred to as "buildup". Previous studies have shown that buildup is frequency specific (Anstis & Saida, 1985) and that its biasing effects decays over several seconds (Beauvois & Meddis, 1997). No study has examined whether the frequency specificity of buildup persists for such a long duration. The Mansfield sand is an informally named member of the Pennsylvanian Atoka Formation in Arkansas. Once a productive gas reservoir, the Mansfield is situated in a double plunging anticline in the southern portion of the Arkoma Basin. The formation is internally composed of sandstone units ranging in thickness from tens of feet to over a hundred feet interbedded with shale units ranging in thickness from several tens of feet to hundreds of feet. Behavior-based (Level 3) and results-based (Level 4) evaluations of training interventions can provide organizations with substantive proof of the value of those interventions. Training professionals have long acknowledged the necessity of conducting such evaluations, yet Level 3 evaluations are conducted for only about half of all training interventions and Level 4 for about one-third. This research examined the frequency with which training professionals currently conduct Level 3 and Level 4 evaluations, their perceptions on the utility of Level 3 and Level 4 evaluations, and the factors that facilitate or obstruct their attempts to perform such evaluations.

In this thesis, we studied the gold and silver relationship using stochastic-parameter regression models. We formulated their time-varying relationship as a state-space model and used the Kalman filter algorithm to estimate the stochastic regression parameters for gold and silver prices. The data set used in this thesis covers 31 years using the London fix prices between January 1969 and December 2000. The start date was selected as the first full year silver prices were included in the London fix prices. The aims of this study were to identify physiologic characteristics among trained off-road cyclists and correlate them with a field-based time trial to determine predictors of live performance. Fourteen trained male off-road cyclists were recruited for this study, and measured for maximum aerobic capacity (VO_2max), peak aerobic power (W_peak), maximum anaerobic power (W_max), time trial performance (sec), and climbing ability (vertical feet per second – VFS). Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) populations in the continental United States experienced a dramatic population decline during the twentieth century. Populations across the species’ range have largely recovered, thanks in part to the ban of DDT, rapidly enacted conservation measures, and reintroduction efforts. Using six microsatellite loci, I tested the genetic variation of bald eagles across six states in the Pacific Northwest. Genetic analysis revealed that, despite undergoing a population-wide decline, the bald eagles in the locations sampled outside of Idaho did not exhibit the characteristics typically associated with a genetic bottleneck (i.e., a reduced number of alleles and …

Short-term wind power forecasting can be a valuable tool for better informing grid operators on the available wind power. A regular expression and region-specific filtering system for biological records at the National Center for Biotechnology database is integrated into an object oriented sequence counting application, and a statistical software suite is designed and deployed to interpret the resulting k-mer frequencies|with a priority focus on nullomers. The proteome k-mer frequency spectra of ten model organisms and the genome k-mer frequency spectra of two bacteria and virus strains for the coding and non-coding regions are comparatively scrutinized. We observe that the naturally-evolved (NCBI/organism) and the artificially-biased (randomly-generated) sequences exhibit a clear deviation from the artificially-unbiased (randomly-generated) histogram distributions. …
