Analysis Of The Effect Of Feeding Regimen On Gh/Igf Axis In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Samantha Puckett Aug 2012

Analysis Of The Effect Of Feeding Regimen On Gh/Igf Axis In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus), Samantha Puckett

Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) are the most widely farmed aquatic animal in the United States. Assessing the effect of feeding regimens on their overall growth requires grow-out trials and a subsequent inefficient use of time and money. The growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) axis regulates growth based upon environmental factors such as feed intake in many teleost fish species. In order to increase the efficiency of aquaculture, the components of the GH/IGF-1 axis might be used as endocrine biomarkers to evaluate instantaneous growth rate. The goal of this study was to better understand the effects of feeding regimen on …

Comparative Review Of Imaging Methods Used For Diagnosing Renal Artery Stenosis (Ras), Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Jacinta Browne Aug 2012

Comparative Review Of Imaging Methods Used For Diagnosing Renal Artery Stenosis (Ras), Deirdre King, Carmel Moran, Jacinta Browne

Articles

This comparative review examines the efficacy of different imaging methods to detect and quantify renal artery stenosis (RAS). Detection of RAS is important because it can lead to renovascular hypertension which is the most common form of secondary hypertension. Furthermore, it is important that a RAS is detected as early as possible as it is a potentially correctable cause of hypertension.1 If detected at an early stage RAS can potentially be treated using a minimally invasive drug treatment regimen rather than the more invasive percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty without or with stent placement or surgery. Currently there are a …

Investigations Of Conduction Mechanisms Of Ion-Conducting, Bridging Memory Devices (Cbram/Pmc/Ecm), Kyle Bradley Campbell Aug 2012

Investigations Of Conduction Mechanisms Of Ion-Conducting, Bridging Memory Devices (Cbram/Pmc/Ecm), Kyle Bradley Campbell

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Electron storage memory devices are approaching the minimum dimensions that are physically possible due to the onward march of Moore’s law. To continue to enable the increased memory densities needed for today’s applications, especially low power and size constrained mobile devices, new memory solutions are needed. Several candidates are emerging in this space. Metal ion-conducting memory devices are being investigated due to excellent scalability, speed, and low power. These devices are part of a memory class called resistive memory. In the literature, they are referred to as CBRAM (conductive bridge random access memory), PMC (programmable metallization cell), ECM (electrochemical metallization …

Phylogenetic Relationships Within Columnea Section Angustiflorae: Insights Into Forces Driving Speciation, Lacie Janelle Schulte Aug 2012

Phylogenetic Relationships Within Columnea Section Angustiflorae: Insights Into Forces Driving Speciation, Lacie Janelle Schulte

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Determining the specific factors that played a role in speciation previously took extensive resources that made such studies nearly intractable. Despite the difficulties presented by speciation studies, we are still interested in determining what forces drive the process of evolution to gain a better understanding of divergence among species. Advances in technology allow for a new approach to speciation studies, beginning with molecular phylogenetic analyses that identify the species within a monophyletic clade and generate a species-level phylogeny. Molecular data are an independent source of data and provide a phylogeny to map both morphological characters and ecological parameters. Identifying patterns …

Dynamic Diffusion For Congestion Avoidance In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sri Divya Deenadayalan Aug 2012

Dynamic Diffusion For Congestion Avoidance In Wireless Sensor Networks, Sri Divya Deenadayalan

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are employed for either continuous monitoring or event detection in the target area of interest. In event-driven applications, it is critical to report the detected events in the area, and with sudden bursts of traffic possible due to spatially-correlated events or multiple events, the data loss due to congestion will result in information loss or delayed arrival of the sensed information. Congestion control techniques detect congestion and attempt to recover from packet losses due to congestion, but they cannot eliminate or prevent the occurrence of congestion. Congestion avoidance techniques employ proactive measures to alleviate future congestion …

Training For Empire And Modernity: Japan’S Development Of Hokkaido From The 1870s-90s, Keegan J. Cothern Aug 2012

Training For Empire And Modernity: Japan’S Development Of Hokkaido From The 1870s-90s, Keegan J. Cothern

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Most history texts place the beginning of Japan’s colonial empire in 1895, with the acquisition of Formosa (now Taiwan) and Korea in 1910. The first Japanese experience with administering and developing a land not traditionally their own, nor inhabited by ethnically Yamato Japanese, however, might be found in the relatively inhospitable northern island of Hokkaido during the first half of the Meiji era (1868-1912). Hokkaido can be viewed as a colonization laboratory, where the blueprints of the later Japanese Empire were initially developed. It was not solely by native Japanese knowledge that the exploration, research, development, and the creation of …

Diet Composition, Niche And Geographic Characteristics, And Prey Size Preference Of Barred Owls (Strix Varia) In The Pacific Northwest, Scott Alan Graham Aug 2012

Diet Composition, Niche And Geographic Characteristics, And Prey Size Preference Of Barred Owls (Strix Varia) In The Pacific Northwest, Scott Alan Graham

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This thesis comprises three chapters describing my investigations of dietary composition, niche and geographic characteristics, and prey size preference of Barred Owls (Strix varia) following their recent range expansion into the Pacific Northwest. In the first chapter, I examine annual, seasonal, within-breeding season, and local variation in the diet and evaluate reproductive success as a function of dietary composition in western Oregon during 2007–2009. Diets were based on 3,686 prey individuals identified in 1,127 regurgitated pellets collected from 26 owl family areas. Prey identified in pellets included ≥ 85 taxa (33 mammals, 25 birds, 4 reptiles, 4 amphibians, …

Resilience Limitations And Resistance Of Hyporheic Microbial Communities From Chronic Heavy Metal Contamination Environments: Analysis With The Novel Resazurin Resorufin Smart Tracer, Daniel Joseph Stanaway Aug 2012

Resilience Limitations And Resistance Of Hyporheic Microbial Communities From Chronic Heavy Metal Contamination Environments: Analysis With The Novel Resazurin Resorufin Smart Tracer, Daniel Joseph Stanaway

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

River ecosystems are among the most threatened and rapidly altering systems in the world because of anthropogenic disturbance. Chronic heavy metal contamination of lotic environments is a global concern and a widespread environmental and human health threat. This persistent stressor can shape microbial community structure and function, often selecting for the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics that increase fitness in toxic environments and may encumber the microbial community hosting metal resistance mechanisms with additional energetic costs. This cost should be expressed in heterotrophic aerobic microbial metabolism, a primary ecological process variable and can be estimated through respiration measurements. Hyporheic respiration is …

Dynamic Modeling Of Single-Phase Induction Motor Loads, Danyal Mohammadi Aug 2012

Dynamic Modeling Of Single-Phase Induction Motor Loads, Danyal Mohammadi

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

Single-phase induction machines are found in various appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines, driers, air conditioners, and fans. Large concentrations of single-phase induction motor loads such as air conditioners and other motor-compressor loads can adversely impact the dynamic performance of a power system. An understanding of the dynamics of this type of induction machine is needed to improve the current state of the art in running power system dynamic studies.

In this thesis, a novel approach of modeling an exact fourth-order model of a single-phase induction machine is developed that gives credence to the well-known double revolving-field theory. Using a …

Galvanized By The Gospel: Nineteenth-Century Baptist Missions And The Anti-Mission Response, Anna B. Holdorf Aug 2012

Galvanized By The Gospel: Nineteenth-Century Baptist Missions And The Anti-Mission Response, Anna B. Holdorf

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

The Second Great Awakening of the early nineteenth century brought significant changes to the American religious landscape. In addition to inspiring the creation of new denominations, the Awakening’s emphasis on religious democracy and the era’s prevalent postmillennial ideology motivated Protestants to establish numerous mission societies and other “benevolent” organizations to aid in the spreading of the Christian gospel. Baptists, too, were launched to a level of evangelistic fervor in the early 1800s that the denomination had never before witnessed. While many Baptists embraced the nineteenth-century mission movement, a significant number of “anti-mission” Baptists rejected it as antithetical to “pure” Baptist …

Let’S Make A Connection: Understanding How Physically Interactive Technology Is Taking The Virtual To The Physical, Lacey Vander Boegh Aug 2012

Let’S Make A Connection: Understanding How Physically Interactive Technology Is Taking The Virtual To The Physical, Lacey Vander Boegh

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

This study offers initial research on Physically Interactive Technology (PIT). Findings of this research reveal how people made sense of PIT, how the ways people understand PIT reveal presence due to physical interaction, and how PIT challenges the definition of online interaction. Current and past literature on social presence theory and social cues theory provide a rationale for how “present” a person can be during online interaction via Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC). Current research states CMC is used in many contexts because of the beneficial ways it allows individuals to feel face to face. However, within this literature, scholars tend to …

A History Of Warren, Idaho: Mining, Race, And Environment, Cletus R. Edmunson Aug 2012

A History Of Warren, Idaho: Mining, Race, And Environment, Cletus R. Edmunson

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations

There have been many sources written on western mining concerning race and the environment, but many of those have focused on the negative consequences mining has had on the environment and the racial violence perpetuated against minorities in those mining towns, particularly the Chinese. There is a need to show a more positive focus on the histories of mining towns, like Warren, that can provide good examples of both responsible environmental stewardship and successful racial integration. Since there have been no studies done or books written that document the complete history of Warren, this study will correct that deficiency so …
