For information visualization researchers, eye tracking has been a useful tool to investigate research participants’ underlying cognitive processes by tracking their eye movements while they interact with visual techniques. We used an eye tracker to better understand why participants with a variant of a tabular visualization called ‘SimulSort’ outperformed ones with a conventional table and typical one-column sorting feature (i.e., Typical Sorting). The collected eye-tracking data certainly shed light on the detailed cognitive processes of the participants; SimulSort helped with decision-making tasks by promoting efficient browsing behavior and compensatory decision-making strategies. The eukaryotic nucleus is both spatially and functionally partitioned. This organization contributes to the maintenance, expression, and transmission of genetic information. Though our ability to probe the physical structure of the genome within the nucleus has improved substantially in recent years, relatively little is known about the factors that regulate its organization or the mechanisms through which specific organizational states are achieved. Here, we show that Drosophila melanogaster Condensin II induces axial compaction of interphase chromosomes, globally disrupts interchromosomal interactions, and promotes the dispersal of peri-centric heterochromatin. Through various waves of reform, the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy remains inefficient without meeting all of its stated goals. The MacSherry reforms of 1992 resulted in the opposite of what leaders intended: higher spending and a growing bureaucracy. Later in the 1990s, Agenda 2000 slashed its originally planned cutbacks after farmers protested. Though support exists for reducing spending on agriculture, market intervention remains.

This study analyses the global energy projections and regional dynamics in the Persian Gulf. It is shown that the future projections in the world energy markets signify the importance of cooperation between developed and developing countries. It is also suggested that connected to the global economic crises and the regional demand change in the energy market, there is a growing need for international support to the Persian Gulf security.

On the evening of November 29, 2011, Jefferson’s Neurosurgery Interest Group (NSIG) hosted fourteen Jefferson Medical College students for a technical course entitled “Foundations in Neurosurgery” taught by Dr. Ashwini Sharan, Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Director of the Division of Functional Neurosurgery, and Dr. Joshua Heller, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Additional instructors included Jefferson neurosurgery residents Rohan Chitale (PGY5), Chengyuan Wu (PGY4), and Karl Balsara (PGY2). Stryker MedED provided equipment, models, and instructors Ryan Dugan and Devin Opdendyk (Figure 1).

Persistent elevation of intracranial pressure (ICP), if untreated, may lead to brain ischemia or lack of brain oxygen and even brain death.1-6,10 When standard treatments for elevated ICP are exhausted without any signs of improvement, decompressive craniectomy can be an effective alternative solution.7,19 Decompressive craniectomies (DC) have been used as a method of controlling intracranial pressure in patients with cerebral edema secondary to cerebral ischemia, subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), and traumatic brain injury (TBI), among others. 8-10 Several studies over the years have demonstrated the efficacy of this procedure.7-9,11,35,36 However, consensus is still lacking in the utility of DC as …

The use of radiation treatment (RT) is usually reserved for residual or recurrent craniopharyngiomas, and the role of RT alone and not as an adjunctive therapy to surgery has not been clearly defined. The authors describe a case of a 50-year-old man presenting with a large suprasellar craniopharyngioma with extension into the third ventricle, producing acute hydrocephalus. A ventriculoperitoneal shunt was performed concurrently with an endoscopic biopsy. Treatment with fractionated stereotactic radiosurgery (FSR) resulted in near resolution of the lesion with no evidence of recurrence over six years. We report an interesting case of a spontaneous occlusion of a carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) causing a paradoxical worsening of orbital symptoms. A 59-year-old woman presented to our institution with conjunctival injection, raised intraocular pressures (IOP) and mild exophthalmos of her left eye. A digital subtraction angiography (DSA) demonstrated a Type-D CCF draining into the left superior ophthalmic vein (SOV). The patient declined endovascular treatment. She presented 15 months later with acute exacerbation of her orbital signs and symptoms. A DSA showed no evidence of arteriovenous fistula, and a brain MRI was consistent with spontaneous thrombosis of the SOV. At …

As more attention is focused toward carbon dioxide emissions into the environment, conversion of CO2 to useful chemicals can utilize the extra carbon dioxide captured from power plant stack gas, instead of sequestration. The mainstream method of producing carbonates and carbamates utilizes toxic phosgene. The cycloaddition of carbon dioxide to epichlorohydrin, or other epoxides, can produce carbonates without the use of phosgene. A catalyst with high surface area, Lewis acid sites, and an affinity for carbon dioxide is required to develop carbonates using carbon dioxide. With ongoing military operations spanning the globe, a new population of combat veterans is emerging. Posttraumatic stress disorder is an enormous issue for veterans, and knowing the status of psychosocial treatments for it seems necessary. The current study seeks to provide a more comprehensive description of the current status of outcome research for combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder, including treatments being utilized, attrition rates, percent responders/nonresponder, and population conflict (i.e., OIF, OEF, Vietnam). The literature was systematically reviewed and 10 randomized controlled trials were identified that focused solely on veteran populations with posttraumatic stress disorder. Marmorkrebs is a parthenogenetic crayfish with no indigenous populations. They have been introduced in several countries and could become an invasive species. Individuals introduced in Germany had longer, sharper spines, suggesting an adaptation to predators via developmental plasticity. This was tested by exposing juveniles to the odor of a fish during development and comparing them to controls. Subsequent spine length or sharpness did not differ. Other crayfish detect predators via an alarm cue, hemolymph, and exhibit avoidant behavior in response. I hypothesized that Marmorkrebs would also treat hemolymph as an alarm cue.
