The six-layered mammalian neocortex derives from a pseudostratified neuroepithelium by a series of cell divisions of neuronal progenitors, neuroepithelial and radial glial cells. Neurogenesis, a major event in the developing neocortex, relies on the ability of radial glial cells (RGCs) to switch from proliferative self-expanding to differentiative neurongenerating/progenitor self-renewing divisions. However, the molecular mechanisms that control this switch in a correct temporal manner are not well understood. In this thesis, I demonstrated that the DOCK180 family member DOCK7, an activator of Rac GTPases, plays an important role in the regulation of RGC proliferation versus differentiation. Coordination networks (CNs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline materials composed of metal ions linked by multifunctional organic ligands. From these connections, infinite arrays of one-, two-, or three-dimensional networks can be formed. Exploratory synthesis and research of novel CNs and MOFs is of current interest because of their many possible industrial applications including gas storage, catalysis, magnetism, and luminescence. A variety of metal centers and organic ligands can be used to synthesize MOFs and CNs under a range of reaction conditions, leading to extraordinary structural diversity. This thesis will discuss the purpose, theory, and fabrication procedure of a hermetically-sealed, diamond amplified cathode capsule as well as results and progress to date. The objective of this thesis is to develop a procedure to fabricate a successful capsule, in which a successful capsule can contain at least nanotorr pressure during leak checking and hold off at least 5000 V during voltage hold off measurements. Centaurea nigrescens is a native plant in Europe that was introduced to North America in the 1800s. This dissertation focuses on the introduction and spread of C. nigrescens across North America using herbaria records and genetic differences between native and non-native populations to construct likely invasion routes. Herbarium records and the results of a Minimum Cost Arborescence model coupled with chloroplast DNA analysis support the hypothesis that there was an initial introduction of C. nigrescens near Worcester, Massachusetts in 1830. Significant haplotype differences between the populations from the northeastern and the northwestern US support the hypothesis that there was a …

The transport properties of high temperature QCD plasmas can be described by kinetic theory based on the Boltzmann equation. At a leading-log approximation, the Boltzmann equation is reformulated as a Fokker-Planck equation. First, we compute the spectral densities of T^{mu nu} and J^{mu} by perturbing the system with weak gravitational and electromagnetic fields. The spectral densities exhibit a smooth transition from free-streaming quasi-particles to hydrodynamics. This transition is analyzed with hydrodynamics and diffusion equation up to second order. We determine all of the first and second order transport coefficients which characterize the linear response in the hydrodynamic regime. Second, we …

Probabilistic graphical models (PGMs) provide a way to represent variables (nodes) along with their conditional dependencies (edges) and therefore allow formalizing our knowledge of the interacting entities in the real world. Structure learning aims to discover the topology (and parameters) of a PGM that represents accurately a given dataset. Accuracy of representation can be measured by the likelihood that the PGM explains the observed data, which leads to maximum likelihood estimation (MLE). Standard Model (SM) successfully describes the particle spectrum in nature and the interaction between between these particles using gauge symmetries. However, in order to give masses to these particles, the electroweak gauge symmetry must be broken. In the SM, this is achieved through the Higgs mechanism where a scalar Higgs field acquires a vacuum expectation value. It is well known that the presence of a scalar field in the SM leads to a hierarchy problem, and therefore the SM by itself can not be the fundamental theory of nature. This study investigates why and where within a sentence, non-L1 Spanish students still make mistakes when classifying the grammatical gender after being exposed to the grammar explanations. Thirty-six L1 and non- L1 English speakers from two Spanish beginner college level class were asked to complete five different experiments, in which students had to match the gender of the noun with the correspondent article and make the gender of the nouns agree by writing or selecting the correct descriptive adjective. Speciation has been a subject of great interest and study since the founding of evolutionary biology by Darwin in 1859. In my thesis, I examine speciation from multiple perspectives in plethodontid salamanders. Molecular phylogenies based on combined mitochondrial and nuclear DNA are commonly used to infer patterns of speciation. Yet, we know little about how mitochondrial and nuclear DNA interact to produce a combined-data tree. How much do trees from mitochondrial and nuclear DNA differ? This dissertation explores the relationship between a regional elite and the central state, focusing on Santa Cruz, a resource-rich department in Bolivia's eastern lowlands. It traces this relationship from 1935 to 1959, a period marked by the region's transformation from a marginalized space--in both the political territory and the national imagination--to a privileged place driving national development. The regionalist trends that have long shaped the historiography tend overlook the critical role played by the central state in fomenting economic development in Santa Cruz. Quantum degenerate atomic gases offer a unique platform for the exploration of a wide variety of interacting many-body systems in a pristine environment, based on a set of powerful tools for the coherent control of the atoms' internal and external degrees of freedom. Here, we present experimental studies of strongly interacting bosonic mixtures in one-dimensional (1D) systems, in which the mobilities of the two species are independently controlled with a state-selective optical lattice. The attrition of cells within organs necessitates replenishment from tissue resident progenitor populations. Study of the murine lung has suggested a number of niches present at different levels of the airways along the proximal-distal axis responsible for steady state epithelial turnover as well as response to catastrophic injury. Within the distal most bronchiole airspaces, injury resistant cells termed bronchioalveolar stem cells (BASCs) have been reported to reside at the bronchioalveolar duct junction (BADJ). Recent evidence suggesting post-Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery patients are at an increased risk for developing substance use disorders (SUDs) has brought to light the importance of understanding how the postoperative development of a SUD may affect weight loss and psychosocial outcomes. The present investigation used a quasi- experimental, non- equivalent, matched pair between subjects group design to compare these outcomes in post-RYGB patients in inpatient treatment for SUDs with post-RYGB patients who reported no significant post-surgical substance-related problems. Participants were matched on sex, age, and time since surgery. Average weight losses of the two groups were not significantly different, …

While previous studies have examined different aspects of hominin Biocultural evolution and stone tools, this project will consider the role which vision might have had in tool production. Paralleling Key and Lycett's line of argument, we believe that vision would have played just as integral a role in producing an ideal cutting tool as precision gripping. If a certain type of vision was "adaptive" to stone tool synthesis, then this would explain its frequency in modern human populations. This dissertation uses post storm imagery processed using wavelet transforms to investigate the capability of wavelet transform-based methods to classify post storm damage of residential areas. Five level Haar, Meyer, Symlets, and Coiflets wavelet transform decompositions of the post storm imagery are inputs to damage classification models of post hurricane and tornado damage. Hurricanes Ike, Rita, Katrina, and Ivan are examined as are the 2011 Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes.

Wavelet transform-based classification methods yielded varying classification accuracies for the four hurricanes examined, ranging from 67 percent to 89 percent classification accuracy for classification models informed by samples from the storms …

Every practice has a theory, but multiracial queer social movements have centered theory in their praxis. In consciousness-raising and affinity groups, listservs and electronic forums, zines and community action research projects, participants frame the task of thought itself as collective and interactive, subject not just to evolving norms, but also to vicissitudes of duration, location, and timing, medium, ritual, and personality. I argue that the ephemeral character of these interventions is not incidental or regrettable, but designed to encourage organic participation and obstruct institutional codification. Food availability and acquisition are critical components of a stopover site's suitability, but we know relatively little about how changes in food availability affect the stopover ecology of migrating landbirds. We examined fruit and arthropod availability in three habitats, studied foraging behavior and diet, and investigated use versus availability for passerines migrating through southwestern Idaho in autumn. Hemiptera dominated foliage-dwelling arthropod communities in all three habitats, whereas Hymenoptera were most numerous among ground-dwelling arthropods. Mountain shrubland had relatively high biomass of both ground-dwelling and foliage-dwelling arthropods, whereas conifer forest had high biomass of foliage-dwelling arthropods only and shrub steppe had …

However, most research and theory contributions are to a great extent limited to accounting for leadership practice in the West. This study is designed to develop an effective leadership model that works in the Chinese context. Paternalistic leadership, a dominant leadership style in an Eastern business environment, is compared with transformational leadership, a dominant leadership style in a Western business environment. A Master Person Index (MPI) is a software system that links together the records about individuals from a diverse set of data sources and that allows data consumers to ¬¬retrieve correlated data for a given person. The Utah Department of Health recently contracted with Utah State University to build an MPI that links data from four initial data sources, and with enough extensibility that it will eventually handle dozens. This MPI, called the Utah Public-health Master Person Index or phMPI, was to include a special software component that automatically computed the “best version of truth” about each individual using correlated …

How Does The Use Of Phonemic Awareness Skill-Building Software In Conjunction With An In-School Literacy Program Benefit Students' Literacy Skills?, Amanda Radell

This study examined how phonemic awareness skill building software benefited the literacy skills of school age children. Research was conducted through observation of two students, a kindergartener and third grader, using Earobics software. In addition to observation, informal interviews were also used to determine the necessity of the software and its possible benefits. The students demonstrated an increase in literacy skills, but not phonemic awareness skills specifically. The benefits of this software allow for students to develop their literacy skills more fully by providing a strong skill base when used as a supplement to a complete literacy program.

The concepts of consonance and dissonance broadly understood can provide structural models for creators of visual music. The application of words such as 'harmony' across both music and visual arts indicated potential correspondences not just between sensory elements such as pitch and colour but also with the manipulation of tension and resolution, anticipation and stability in visual music. Concepts of harmony have a long history in proportions of space, colour and motion as well as music that artists can now exploit with new technologies.
