Using Mice With Conditional Deletion Of The Ifng Receptor To Identify The Cellular Targets Of Ifng During Development Of Anti-Listeria Immune Responses, Sang Hun Lee Aug 2012

Using Mice With Conditional Deletion Of The Ifng Receptor To Identify The Cellular Targets Of Ifng During Development Of Anti-Listeria Immune Responses, Sang Hun Lee

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Host responsiveness to IFNg is critical for resolution of Listeria infection, but the identities and roles of IFNg responsive cells that initiate this process remain unclear. In this thesis, unique mice displaying conditional loss of the IFNg receptor: Ifngr1f/f mice) in different tissues have been generated and used to explore the role of this cytokine in initiating the anti-Listeria response.

Whereas Ifngr1f/f mice displayed normal cellular levels of IFNGR1 and normal resistance to Listeria infection, Vav-icre+Ifngr1f/f mice lacking IFNg responsiveness selectively in hematopoietic cells exhibited highly increased susceptibility to Listeria infection comparable to that of Ifngr1-/- mice. In contrast, Itgax-cre+ …

Preserved In Alcohol: Case Studies Of Adaptive Reuse Projects By Mcmenamins, Inc., James Howard Tichgelaar Aug 2012

Preserved In Alcohol: Case Studies Of Adaptive Reuse Projects By Mcmenamins, Inc., James Howard Tichgelaar

Student Theses and Dissertations

The main focus of this dissertation is the preservation activities of McMenamins, a chain of restaurants, pubs, and hotels in western Oregon and Washington. Over the last twenty years, McMenamins has been involved in a series of adaptive reuse projects that have involved community partnerships to save unusual buildings or sites, including multi-building properties that were challenging to preserve because they do not fit the typical functions of an adaptive reuse project. A vital element of the renovation strategy used by McMenamins includes creating interpretive murals and printed materials that connect visitors to the history of the site and increase …

Murine Gammaherpesvirus 68 Lana Acts On Terminal Repeat Dna To Mediate Episome Persistence, Aline C. Habison, Chantal Beauchemin, J. Pedro Simas, Edward J. Usherwood

Dartmouth Scholarship

Murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) ORF73 (mLANA) has sequence homology to Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA). LANA acts on the KSHV terminal repeat (TR) elements to mediate KSHV episome maintenance. Disruption of mLANA expression severely reduces the ability of MHV68 to establish latent infection in mice, consistent with the possibility that mLANA mediates episome persistence. Here we assess the roles of mLANA and MHV68 TR (mTR) elements in episome persistence. mTR-associated DNA persisted as an episome in latently MHV68-infected tumor cells, demonstrating that the mTR elements can serve as a cis-acting element for MHV68 episome maintenance. In some …

Cancer Biotherapy Resource, Preety Priya Aug 2012

Cancer Biotherapy Resource, Preety Priya

Theses

`Cancer Biotherapy' - as opposed to cancer chemotherapy- is the use of macromolecular, biological agents instead of organic chemicals or drugs to treat cancer. Biotherapy is a treatment modality that blocks the growth of cancer cells by interfering with specific, targeted molecules needed for carcinogenesis and tumor growth instead of simply interfering with rapidly dividing cells as in chemotherapy1. In light to the much higher selectivity of biological agents than chemical agents for cancer cells over normal cells, there is a much less toxic side effect in biotherapy as compared to chemotherapy. As solid tumor cancer continues to be analyzed …

Will Venezuela's Petro-Diplomacy Survive?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Aug 2012

Will Venezuela's Petro-Diplomacy Survive?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Henrique Capriles, the Venezuelan opposition leader running for president against Hugo Chávez, said on Aug. 1 that he would scrap preferential oil deals with foreign allies including Argentina, Cuba and others, Reuters reported. Capriles said the country would save $6.7 billion annually under his plan, money that he would use for domestic social spending. Meanwhile, state-run oil company PDVSA reportedly will need to set aside between $4 billion and $7 billion annually for the next five years to make payments on its heavy debt burden, analysts have forecast. Has Venezuela's petro-diplomacy run the end of its course? Which countries would …

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul Aug 2012

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul

Theses

Target temperature estimation from thermal infrared (TIR) imagery is a complex task that becomes increasingly more difficult as the target size approaches the size of a projected pixel. At that point the assumption of pixel homogeneity is invalid as the radiance value recorded at the sensor is the result of energy contributions from the target material and any other background material that falls within a pixel boundary. More often than not, thermal infrared pixels are heterogeneous and therefore subpixel temperature extraction becomes an important capability. Typical subpixel estimation approaches make use of multispectral or hyperspectral sensors. These technologies are expensive …

Adding Autonomic Healing Capabilities To Polyethylene Oxide, Dorina M. Chipara, Maritza Flores, Alma Perez, Nancy Puente, Karen Lozano, Mircea Chipara

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The addition of autonomic healing (frequently defined as self-healing) capabilities to a water-soluble polymer (polyethylene oxide, PEO) is for the first time reported. The self-healing system consists of urea-formaldehyde microcapsules filled with dicyclopentadiene and first-generation Grubbs catalyst, dispersed within polyethylene oxide. Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize this autonomic healing system. Self-healing capabilities were confirmed by mechanical testing (load–displacement, engineering stress–engineering strain, and true stress–true strain dependences) recorded at very slow elongation rates (0.01 mm/s). The testing fate was chosen to allow for the complete consumption of the monomer before fracture (the polymerization …

Sales Between A Partnership And Non-Partners, Douglas A. Kahn Aug 2012

Sales Between A Partnership And Non-Partners, Douglas A. Kahn

Articles

The code denies a deduction for a loss recognized on a sale or exchange between certain related parties. Two of the principal code sections that deny a deduction in that circumstance are sections 267(a)(1) and 707(b)(1)(A). Two regulatory provisions promulgated under section 267 apply the denial of a loss deduction rule to partnerships — reg. section 1.267(b)-1(b) and temp. reg. section 1.267(a)-2T(c), Question 2. I conclude that to the extent reg. section 1.267(b)-1(b) applies to section 267(a)(1), it is invalid and has been invalid since 1986. Also, two of the questions and answers in the temporary regulation are invalid.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, And Rearrangements Of Ortho-Cyclophane Cyclotetraveratrylene (Cttv) Tetraketone, Marlon R. Lutz Jr., Matthias Zeller, Samuel R.S. Sarsah, Artur Filipowicz, Hailey Wouters, Daniel Becker Aug 2012

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, And Rearrangements Of Ortho-Cyclophane Cyclotetraveratrylene (Cttv) Tetraketone, Marlon R. Lutz Jr., Matthias Zeller, Samuel R.S. Sarsah, Artur Filipowicz, Hailey Wouters, Daniel Becker

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Oxidation of cyclotetraveratrylene (CTTV) with potassium permanganate in pyridine under reflux gave tetraketone (the [14]ketonand) 3 which exists as a previously unobserved barrel conformation with S4symmetry in the crystal structure, although the more familiar ‘boat’ conformer was shown by semi-empirical AM1 calculations to be 3.03 kcal/mol lower in energy. In addition to CTTV tetraketone 3, an isomeric bis-spirolactone 4 was isolated from the basic oxidation conditions, analogous to the product of trans-annular attack and rearrangement observed with oxidation of cyclotriveratrylene, whereas in acid at elevated temperatures, tetraketone 3 underwent a very efficient rearrangement and decarboxylation to afford the highly symmetric …

Women And Wasta: The Use Of Focus Groups For Understanding Social Capital And Middle Eastern Women, Deborah C. Bailey Aug 2012

Women And Wasta: The Use Of Focus Groups For Understanding Social Capital And Middle Eastern Women, Deborah C. Bailey

The Qualitative Report

Social capital is the use of informal networking to secure access to resources and opportunities. Often identified as an asset for offsetting deficiencies in societies, research on the phenomena is limited. This paper describes a qualitative study using focus groups with young adult Emeriti women representing three social-economic groups who were interviewed by the author in order to explore the topic of social capital, specifically a form of social capital defined by the Arabic term “wasta”. The women discussed their experiences of how wasta persists regardless of social and religious laws forbidding its practice and how they might use it …

A Model Of Buyer-Supplier Relationships In A Transnational Company: The Role Of The Business Network Context, Matevž Rašković, Maja Makovec Brenčič, Jan C. Fransoo, Barbara Mörec

Economic and Business Review

The paradigmatic shift in marketing from the beginning of the 1990’s has transformed the study of economic exchange, towards addressing more the relational aspects of these exchanges, where relationship specificity has replaced transaction specificity. This is particularly true in transnational supply exchanges, where specialization and outsourcing have increased the importance of effective and efficient management of buyer-supplier relationships, and their corresponding networks in which they are embedded in. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of selected dimensions of buyer-supplier relationships within a specific TNC business-to-business (B2B) setting on supply relationship performance from the suppliers’ perspective. The …

Why Bank Market Value To Book Value Ratios So Different: Evidence From Turkish Banking Sector, Fatih Macit, Zeynep Topaloglu

Economic and Business Review

In this paper we examine the market value to book value ratios for publicly traded banks in Turkish banking sector and investigate whether the bank fundamentals could explain the observed differences among the banks. We find that bank fundamentals play a significant role in explaining the differences in market value to book value ratios. The results reveal that banks with higher profitability and a higher ratio of non-interest revenue to total interest revenue tend to have higher market value to book value ratios. Banks with higher net loans to total assets ratio, a larger asset size, and a higher equity …
