Early Evidence Of San Material Culture Represented By Organic Artifacts From Border Cave, South Africa, Francesco D’Errico, Lucinda Backwell, Paola Villa
Early Evidence Of San Material Culture Represented By Organic Artifacts From Border Cave, South Africa, Francesco D’Errico, Lucinda Backwell, Paola Villa
KIP Articles
Recent archaeological discoveries have revealed that pigment use, beads, engravings, and sophisticated stone and bone tools were already present in southern Africa 75,000 y ago. Many of these artifacts disappeared by 60,000 y ago, suggesting that modern behavior appeared in the past and was subsequently lost before becoming firmly established. Most archaeologists think that San hunter–gatherer cultural adaptation emerged 20,000 y ago. However, reanalysis of organic artifacts from Border Cave, South Africa, shows that the Early Later Stone Age inhabitants of this cave used notched bones for notational purposes, wooden digging sticks, bone awls, and bone points similar to those …

As a light-driven water-plastoquinone oxidoreductase, Photosystem II produces molecular oxygen as an enzymatic product. Additionally, under a variety of stress conditions, reactive oxygen species are produced at or near the active site for oxygen evolution. In this study, Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry was used to identify oxidized amino acid residues located in several core Photosystem II proteins (D1, D2, CP43, and CP47) isolated from spinach Photosystem II membranes. While the majority of these oxidized residues (81%) are located on the oxygenated solvent-exposed surface of the complex, several residues on the CP43 protein ( 354E, 355T, 356M, and 357R) …

Sol-Gel Coatings For On-Line Preconcentration In Capillary Electrophoresis, Abdul Malik, Wen Li, David P. Fries
Sol-Gel Coatings For On-Line Preconcentration In Capillary Electrophoresis, Abdul Malik, Wen Li, David P. Fries
USF Patents
A novel on-line method is presented for the extraction and preconcentration of amino acids using a sol-gel coated column coupled to a conventional UV/vis detector. Extraction, stacking and focusing techniques are used in the preconcentration procedures. Sol-gel coatings are created by using N-Octadecyldimethyl[3(trimethoxysilyl)proply]ammonium chloride (C18-TMS) in the coating sol solutions. The resulting sol-gel coating carries a positive charge. For extraction, the pH of the samples is properly adjusted to impart a net negative charge to amino acids. A long plug of the sample is then passed through the sol-gel coated capillary to facilitate extraction via electrostatic interaction between the positively …

A new in vitro culture model for latency of tuberculosis pathogen suitable for screening chemical libraries was developed by subjecting the pathogen to multiple stresses that the pathogen is thought to encounter in the host. When subjected to these stress factors, the pathogen develops key features characteristic of latency, drug resistance and lipid storage. Using the culture, a method to screen chemicals was developed. This method is suitable for high through put screening.

Using Gis Databases To Simulate Night Light Imagery, Joshua Zollweg
Using Gis Databases To Simulate Night Light Imagery, Joshua Zollweg
Theses
The Digital Imaging and Remote Sensing Image Generation (DIRSIG) model and other image simulators provide the ability to utilize detailed, artificial scenes to generate spectrally and spatially realistic simulated imagery. Simulated imagery is useful in a myriad of ways, such as sensor modeling, algorithm performance assessment, and others. Actually making synthetic scenes, however, is often a time consuming process, requiring the manual placement of the many objects required to define the scene. This is particularly true for scenes of large spatial extent. Proposed is a technique to generate large-area night scenes for DIRSIG. This is accomplished by using freely available …

Dynamical Reaction Pathways In Eley-Rideal Recombination Of Nitrogen From W(100), Ernesto Quintas-Sánchez, P. Larrégaray, C. Crespos, L. Martin-Gondre, J. Rubayo-Soneira, J. C. Rayez
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
The scattering of atomic nitrogen over a N-pre-adsorbed W(100) surface is theoretically described in the case of normal incidence off a single adsorbate. Dynamical reaction mechanisms, in particular Eley-Rideal (ER) abstraction, are scrutinized in the 0.1-3.0 eV collision energy range and the influence of temperature on reactivity is considered between 300 and 1500 K. Dynamics simulations suggest that, though non-activated reaction pathways exist, the abstraction process exhibits a significant collision energy threshold (0.5 eV). Such a feature, which has not been reported so far in the literature, is the consequence of a repulsive interaction between the impinging and the pre-adsorbed …
Multisensor Mems For Temperature, Relative Humidity, And High-G Shock Monitoring, Daniel Smith
Multisensor Mems For Temperature, Relative Humidity, And High-G Shock Monitoring, Daniel Smith
Theses
The use of MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical system) sensors in multiple applications of environmental monitoring help to fill the need of a small scale, low power monitoring and sensing applications. In this design, the use of single-die multiple MEMS sensors to monitor ambient temperature, relative humidity, and accelerative high-g shock were developed and tested. In addition to the sensors, signal conditioning circuits were developed for outputting the sensor data into a microcontroller to analyze and process the signals into useful information for human operators to analyze. The three sensors were fabricated using a bulk micro-machined process on 100mm silicon wafers developed in …
A Signal Processing Approach For Preprocessing And 3d Analysis Of Airborne Small-Footprint Full Waveform Lidar Data, Jiaying Wu
Theses
The extraction of structural object metrics from a next generation remote sensing modality, namely waveform light detection and ranging (LiDAR), has garnered increasing interest from the remote sensing research community. However, a number of challenges need to be addressed before structural or 3D vegetation modeling can be accomplished. These include proper processing of complex, often off-nadir waveform signals, extraction of relevant waveform parameters that relate to vegetation structure, and from a quantitative modeling perspective, 3D rendering of a vegetation object from LiDAR waveforms. Three corresponding, broad research objectives therefore were addressed in this dissertation. Firstly, the raw incoming LiDAR waveform …

Characterization Of Microsatellite Loci And Pilot Population Genetic Analysis In Hickory Shad, Alosa Mediocris, Fnu Vishakha
Theses and Dissertations
The hickory shad (Alosa mediocris) is a relatively understudied species of the anadromous fish sub-family Alosinae. This study, the first population genetic analysis of this species, employed 12 neutral microsatellite loci to estimate genetic diversity and population structure in tributaries of lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia including James River and its tributaries (Appomattox and Chickahominy Rivers), Rappahannock River, and Pamunkey River. Genetic variation was extremely low. Estimates of observed heterozygosity were lower than expected heterozygosity. Significant population structure was detected among the six samples (FST = 0.093, p = 0.01). Effective population sizes were low (Ne ranged from 2 to 134). …

Planning Phase Of Population-Specific Healthy Lifestyle Program, Mary M. Moore
Planning Phase Of Population-Specific Healthy Lifestyle Program, Mary M. Moore
DNP and Student Works
Childhood overweight and obesity in the United States are significant health problems that have a negative impact on a child's physical and psychological well-being and that generate an extra financial burden for those affected due to health care costs. The current evidence-base for treatment of childhood overweight and obesity recommends a moderate- to high-intensity healthy lifestyle program of physical activity, healthy diet, and behavioral modification. The purpose of this descriptive, multi-method inquiry was to identify the perceived barriers to a healthy lifestyle for a population of elementary school students, ages 6 to 13 years, as the basis for the development …
