Initial Flight Results Of The Rax-2 Satellite, John Springmann, Benjamin Kempke, James Cutler, Hasan Bahcivan

Small Satellite Conference

The second Radio Aurora Explorer satellite, RAX-2, is a triple CubeSat studying the formation of plasma irregularities in Earth’s ionosphere. The spacecraft was developed jointly by SRI International and the University of Michigan, and it is the first satellite funded by the National Science Foundation. RAX-2 launched October 28, 2011 and is currently operating on orbit. RAX uses a bistatic radar configuration to study the ionospheric irregularities: a ground-based incoherent scatter radar station illuminates the irregularities, and the RAX-based radar receiver measures radar scatter from the irregularities. RAX has successfully measured radar scatter from the ionospheric irregularities, providing unprecedented auroral …

Small Satellite Conference

Funded by the NSF CubeSat and NASA ELaNa programs, the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment (DICE) mission consists of two 1.5U CubeSats which were launched into an eccentric low Earth orbit on October 28, 2011. Each identical spacecraft carries two Langmuir probes to measure ionospheric in-situ plasma densities, electric field probes to measure in-situ DC and AC electric fields, and a magnetometer to measure in-situ DC and AC magnetic fields. Given the tight integration of these multiple sensors with the CubeSat platforms, each of the DICE spacecraft is effectively a “sensor-sat” capable of comprehensive ionospheric diagnostics. Over time, the sensor-sats will …

Evaluation Of Power Control System For Micro And Nano Satellites By Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulator, Yuji Sakamoto, Toshinori Kuwahara, Yoshihiro Tomioka, Kazufumi Fukuda, Kazuya Yoshida

Small Satellite Conference

The evaluation method using Hardware in the Loop (HIL) simulator of power control system for micro and nano satellites is suggested. The results for two satellite projects, which are RISING-2 and RAIKO, are described. The generation power by solar panels and the consuming power by electrical units are supplied or consumed by external instruments. The power-related status data of real satellite are measured via the downlink. As a dummy satellite, satellite simulation software is simultaneously executed, and the status data are compared to ones of real satellite for updating the math models. Through this method, the power environment on orbit …

The Things You Can’T Ignore: Evolving A Sub-Arcsecond Star Tracker, John Enright, Doug Sinclair, Tom Dzamba Aug 2012

The Things You Can’T Ignore: Evolving A Sub-Arcsecond Star Tracker, John Enright, Doug Sinclair, Tom Dzamba

Small Satellite Conference

The feasibility of a star tracker with 1 arc-second accuracy and 1 deg/sec slew capability is explored, using the ST-16 design as a starting point. Whole-sky simulation is used to determine the impact of optical design on the star tracker availability. The current optical calibration process is examined, and shown to be inadequate for the desired performance. Additional factors that become important at high accuracy are examined. These are detector calibration, temperature variation, chromatic aberration, stellar aberration and proper motion. Plausible methods of dealing with each of these are presented.

Investigating The Use Of Miniaturized Electrodynamic Tethers To Enhance The Capabilities Of Femtosatellites And Other Ultra-Small Satellites, Iverson Bell, Brian Gilchrist, Sven Bilén, Jesse Mcternan

Small Satellite Conference

The success of nanospacecraft and the evolution of the millimeter-scale wireless sensors concept (i.e., “SmartDust”) have generated interest in smaller spacecraft, both as stand-alone satellites and elements in a swarm or maneuverable fleet. However, so-called flat ChipSats proposed as complete spacecraft fabricated on semiconductor wafers or other larger pico- and femtosatellite, highly integrated architectures have an inherently high area-to-mass ratio, and this can result in a short orbital life in low Earth orbit (LEO) due to atmospheric drag. In this paper, we summarize trade studies in which we investigate the use of a very short (few meters), semi-rigid electrodynamic (ED) …

Cadet: A High Data Rate Software Defined Radio For Smallsat Applications, Edward Kneller, Kevin Hyer, Todd Mcintyre, David Jones, Charles Swenson

Small Satellite Conference

The government and private sectors are showing more interest in SmallSats for a wider range of missions. However, mission planners are discovering that even relatively simple missions are generating significant amounts of data, and that a communication infrastructure that supports high data rates must be considered early in mission conceptualization and project planning. In answer to these emerging communication needs, L-3 Communications, in conjunction with Utah State University – Space Dynamics Laboratory, developed the Cadet Radio for the Dynamic Ionosphere CubeSat Experiment (DICE) space weather program. DICE was successfully launched in October 2011, and the Cadet radios are currently down-linking …

Counting Down To The Launch Of Popacs (Polar Orbiting Passive Atmospheric Calibration Spheres), Walter Holemans, R. Gilbert Moore, Jin Kang

Small Satellite Conference

The main objective of Project POPACS (Polar Orbiting Passive Atmospheric Calibration Spheres) is to measure the changes in density of the auroral zone upper atmosphere, in response to various solar stimuli, such as flares and CMEs. The mission consists of deploying three 10 cm diameter Aluminum spheres into an elliptical polar orbit and tracking them as they make repeated perigee passes in the upper atmosphere, with special emphasis on perigee passes within both the northern and southern auroral zones. The spheres have identical external dimensions and surface compositions, and thus identical drag coefficients, but they have different masses (1, 1.5, …

The components are described in terms of design, manufacturing, and test results. The flow control module can regulate flows in the range of 5-50 μg/s …

Comparison Of Control Moment Gyros And Reaction Wheels For Small Earth-Observing Satellites, Ronny Votel, Doug Sinclair Aug 2012

Comparison Of Control Moment Gyros And Reaction Wheels For Small Earth-Observing Satellites, Ronny Votel, Doug Sinclair

Small Satellite Conference

Multi-ton Earth-observing spacecraft have traditionally used control moment gyros (CMGs) to store momentum and to generate the large torques required for fast slew maneuvers. Small 3-axis controlled satellites, by contrast, will typically use cheaper and simpler reaction wheels to perform the same functions. The question then arises: which actuator is better suited for an Earth-observing mission? This paper compares the performance of each actuator subject to identical agile pointing requirements, and identifies the operating conditions in which one actuator outperforms the other.

Improving The Quantitative Assessment Of Intraretinal Features By Determining Both Structural And Optical Properties Of The Retinal Tissue With Optical Coherence Tomography, Wei Gao

Open Access Dissertations

The goal of this project is to obtain quantitative assessments of intraretinal features by determining the structural and optical properties of retinal tissue with optical coherence tomography. To accomplish this goal, structural and optical properties, in addition to thickness measurements, were extracted from OCT-based images and were used for the discrimination of DM eyes with and without DR from healthy eyes. First, structural parameters including the thickness, fractal dimension, energy, entropy, correlation and contrast were evaluated for each intraretinal layer using various image processing techniques such as speckle noise removal, retinal segmentation and blood vessel shadow removal. In addition, optical …

Facebook Ipo Lockup Expiration, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

When a firm undertakes an IPO, insiders (owners and venture capitalists, among others) agree to retain their shares (i.e., lockup) for a period of time, typically six months. When the lockup period expires, it is customary to see a large block of shares flood the market, having an adverse effect on the stock's price. Facebook just hit its lockup expiration. See article here, NY Times.
