Experimental Investigation Into Lunar Melt Density And Compressibility : The Role Of Titanium, Kathleen Vander Kaaden Aug 2012

Experimental Investigation Into Lunar Melt Density And Compressibility : The Role Of Titanium, Kathleen Vander Kaaden

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

This study focuses on determining the density and compressibility of four lunar picritic glasses as a function of TiO2 content from 0-11 GPa and 1748-2473 K (1475-2200°C). These glasses are hypothesized to have quenched rapidly as glass beads during lunar fire fountain eruptions. The lunar glass beads have distinctive colors that correspond to TiO2 content. The glasses of interest for this study are the Apollo 15 green glass Type C (A15C) which has a TiO2 content of 0.26 wt%, the Apollo 14 yellow glass (A14Y) which has a TiO2 content of 4.58 wt%, the Apollo 17 orange glass 74220-type (A17O) …

We are in the process of examining the relationship between neurological damage associated with repeated closed-head injuries and the behaviors of CTE. We’ve been using the example of spearing, illustrating the effects of this banned football behavior on the biological integrity of the human brain. We discussed how damage to one such neurological circuit, the Papez Circuit, can lead to chronic changes in mood. Here we discuss changes in three cognitive gadgets: executive function, memory processing, and motor control.

Huntsman Professors Find Ways To Make “Green” More Macho, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

Last spring, Huntsman marketing professors Cathy Hartman and Edwin Stafford got a chuckle over an Ogilvy Earth study that found green was too pink. Specifically, the ad agency reported that men, in general, resist environmentally-preferable behaviors and products, such as carrying reusable shopping bags at the supermarket, drinking from reusable water bottles, or driving gas-electric hybrid Priuses, because they perceive environmentalism as inherently too feminine.

Dynamic Topography Of The Western Great Plains : Geomorphic And 40ar/39ar Evidence For Mantle-Driven Uplift Associated With The Jemez Lineament, New Mexico And Se Colorado, Alexander Nereson Aug 2012

Dynamic Topography Of The Western Great Plains : Geomorphic And 40ar/39ar Evidence For Mantle-Driven Uplift Associated With The Jemez Lineament, New Mexico And Se Colorado, Alexander Nereson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The causal mechanisms for the onset and patterns of post-Miocene erosion of the western Great Plains remain the subject of an enthusiastic debate between the roles of climatically-modulated geomorphic parameters and tectonic rock uplift as drivers of long-term erosion. This study distinguishes between these drivers on the plains of New Mexico and Colorado where post-Miocene erosion and late Cenozoic volcanism of the Jemez lineament have produced distinctive modern landscapes characterized by deep bedrock canyons and inverted, basalt-capped mesas. 40Ar/39Ar ages are used to define an episodic eruption history in the Raton-Clayton volcanic field and to quantify denudation rates from flow-capped …

Nutrient Dynamics In A Headwater Stream : Use Of Continuous Water Quality Sensors To Examine Seasonal, Event, And Diurnal Processes In The East Fork Jemez River, Nm, Lauren R. Sherson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Stream water quality can change substantively over seasonal, event, and diurnal scales. Multiple biogeochemical processes operate on a 24-hour timescale, and also may be influenced by local weather and precipitation events. Increased sampling frequency, made possible by recent developments in continuous water quality monitors, allows us to better understand biogeochemical responses to these events. Continuous water quality sensors were deployed in the East Fork Jemez River (located in northern New Mexico) from 2010 – 2011 to investigate the temporal variability of nutrient concentrations and biogeochemical parameters and the controls on this variation. This thesis is split into two chapters representing …

Dental Hygiene Special Needs Education In New Mexico-A Survey, Juliet Roybal Aug 2012

Dental Hygiene Special Needs Education In New Mexico-A Survey, Juliet Roybal

Dental Hygiene ETDs

The number of institutionalized persons with developmental disabilities has decreased by 75 percent and those living in psychiatric facilities has decreased by 91 percent since deinstitutionalization began in the1960s1-3. These people have been integrated into community settings only to find out that their community is often unprepared to meet their dental and oral health needs2, 3. Those with developmental disabilities are experiencing an increase in life expectancy due to advances in medical care3. Dental professionals often avoid treating this population in fear of behavioral support techniques that may be unfamiliar to them15. Compounding this is the fact that many individuals …

Translated Opinions

Facts: The petitioner began working at the Israel Prison Service (“the IPS”) in 1986. In April of 2009, two months after her fifty-seventh birthday, she was forced to retire. At this age, she was already six months past what was defined in the Civil Service Retirement Law, 5730-1970, as the “retirement age for IPS wardens.” According to the IPS procedures relating to IPS employees of her age and experience, her continued employment after that age was dependent on approval by the IPS Commissioner (following a recommendation made by an internal committee). Such extensions of employment past the “retirement age for …

Fault-Tolerance In Two-Dimensional Topological Systems, Jonas Anderson Aug 2012

Fault-Tolerance In Two-Dimensional Topological Systems, Jonas Anderson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

This thesis is a collection of ideas with the general goal of building, at least in the abstract, a local fault-tolerant quantum computer. The connection between quantum information and topology has proven to be an active area of research in several fields. The introduction of the toric code by Alexei Kitaev demonstrated the usefulness of topology for quantum memory and quantum computation. Many quantum codes used for quantum memory are modeled by spin systems on a lattice, with operators that extract syndrome information placed on vertices or faces of the lattice. It is natural to wonder whether the useful codes …
