Stubborn, Persistent, Dangerous C.Difficile Infections. Is Improvement Possible?, Sara Townsend

Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety Capstone Presentations

C.difficile also known as C.diff or CDI has developed into a dangerous infection for the United States’ health care system. While much work has been done to improve C.diff rates, health care teams have not been successful in reducing C.difficile infections. Many studies have focused on the mode of transmission of C.difficle, yet there still is not consensus on understanding how this infection is spread. Bryn Mawr Hospital, a community hospital in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pa, has struggled to improve their C.diff rates like their peers throughout the country. While their infection rates for C.diff are …

The Use Of Interpreters To Improve The Quality And Safety Of Healthcare Through Better Communication In Obstetric Patients: Effect On Primary Cesarean Delivery Rate, Stephen A. Pearlman, Md

Master of Science in Healthcare Quality and Safety Capstone Presentations

Patients with limited English proficiency have poorer healthcare outcomes. An assessment of the cultural and linguistic competency of Christiana Care Health Systems revealed that our language services were not sufficiently robust and this was affecting care. Therefore, the purpose of this quality improvement study was to improve healthcare outcomes, specifically the rate of primary cesarean delivery, through improved language assistance, to patients with limited English proficiency presenting to labor and delivery. The methods employed included use of the TeamSTEPPS program to educate the staff on how to improve safety for patients with limited English proficiency, adding a live Spanish interpreter …

Multichannel Diffuse Optical Raman Tomography For Bone Characterization In Vivo: A Phantom Study, Jennifer-Lynn H. Demers, Scott C. Davis, Brian W. Pogue, Michael D. Morris

Dartmouth Scholarship

Raman spectroscopy is used to gather information on the mineral and organic components of bone tissue to analyze their composition. By measuring the Raman signal of bone through spatially offset Raman spectroscopy the health of the bone can be determined. We’ve customized a system with 8 collection channels that consist of individual fibers, which are coupled to separate spectrometers and cooled CCDs. This parallel detection system was used to scan gelatin phantoms with Teflon inclusions of two sizes. Raman signals were decoupled from the autofluorescence background using channel specific polynomial fitting. Images with high contrast to background ratios of Raman …

Price-Fixing: Hefty Penalties On Big-Biz Cartels Will Provide Level Playing Field To Small Businesses, John M. Connor, Robert H. Lande Aug 2012

Price-Fixing: Hefty Penalties On Big-Biz Cartels Will Provide Level Playing Field To Small Businesses, John M. Connor, Robert H. Lande

All Faculty Scholarship

Cartels are illegal in India, as they are almost everywhere. They are subject to heavy fines. Why, then, do businesses frequently try to fix prices? Because doing so usually is profitable. On average cartels raise prices by more than 20%, and probably face less than a 25% chance of being caught and convicted. Based upon a sample of 75 international cartels, the authors calculate that the expected profits from price fixing almost always exceed the penalties. No wonder businesses often try to fix prices.

Tuturan Tindakan Komunikatif Subjek Diri Dalam Wacana Narasi, Heri Suwignyo Aug 2012

Tuturan Tindakan Komunikatif Subjek Diri Dalam Wacana Narasi, Heri Suwignyo

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Placing self-autonomy of human beings as purely rational subjects represents one extreme, while positioning rational human subjects as entirely dependent on psychological and socio-economic relations represents the other extreme. This study aims to explain how the main character, Minke, in narrative discourse addresses these two extremes. The data in this research were in the form of textual units analyzed using Bühler’s semiotic model. The results of the study show that there are three ways used by subjects to express themselves: (1) the symptomic way, expressed through validity claims of honesty; (2) the signalic way, shown through regulative speech using normative …

Researching Indonesian Students’ Attitude Towards Foreign Language, Ardi Marwan Aug 2012

Researching Indonesian Students’ Attitude Towards Foreign Language, Ardi Marwan

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

Foreign language attitude plays a significant role in enhancing one’s motivation to learn a particular foreign language. This study aims to obtain an understanding of Indonesian students’ attitudes toward the Japanese language. The data were collected from 160 students learning Japanese. The Foreign Language Attitude Questionnaire (FLAQ), originally developed by Pierson et al. (1980), was used in this study. In addition, attitude factors identified by Pennington and Yu (1994) based on the results of FLAQ factor analysis were incorporated into the current research. The findings indicate that the majority of students showed positive attitudes toward the Japanese language, with no …

Kompetensi Tindak Direktif Anak Usia Prasekolah, Eti Stiawati

Bahasa dan Seni: Jurnal Bahasa, Sastra, Seni, dan Pengajarannya

This study aims to assess the competence of preschool children in producing directive acts. The data were collected in the form of utterances containing forms, functions, and strategies of directive acts. The subjects of this study were children aged 3;0–5;0 years from educated families. The theoretical frameworks employed were pragmatic theory and the Ethnography of Communication. The data were analyzed using an interactive model. The results show that preschool children already demonstrate: (1) fourteen competencies of directive acts, (2) six competencies of directive act functions, and (3) strategic competence in performing directive acts both directly and indirectly.
