Blind Recognition Of Analog Modulation Schemes For Software Defined Radio, Haifeng Xiao
Blind Recognition Of Analog Modulation Schemes For Software Defined Radio, Haifeng Xiao
Dissertations
With the emergence of software defined radios (SDRs), an adaptive receiver is needed that can configure various parameters, such as carrier frequency, bandwidth, symbol timing, and signal to noise ratio (SNR), and automatically identify modulation schemes. In this dissertation research, several fundamental SDR tasks for analog modulations are investigated, since analog radios are often used by civil government agencies and some unconventional military forces. Hence, the detection and recognition of "old technology" analog modulations remain an important task both for civil and military electronic support systems and for notional cognitive radios.
In this dissertation, a Cyclostationarity-Based Decision Tree classifier is …
Fast Algorithms For Brownian Dynamics Simulation With Hydrodynamic Interactions, Zhi Liang
Fast Algorithms For Brownian Dynamics Simulation With Hydrodynamic Interactions, Zhi Liang
Dissertations
In the Brownian dynamics simulation with hydrodynamic interactions, one needs to generate the total displacement vectors of Brownian particles consisting of two parts: a deterministic part which is proportional to the product of the Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa (RPY) tensor D [1, 2] and the given external forces F; and a hydrodynamically correlated random part whose covariance is proportional to the RPY tensor. To be more precise, one needs to calculate Du for a given vector u and compute √Dv for a normally distributed random vector v. For an arbitrary N-particle configuration, D is a 3N x 3N matrix and u, v are …
Graphene-Coated Substrates For Biochemical And Optoelectronic Applications, Amrita Banerjee
Graphene-Coated Substrates For Biochemical And Optoelectronic Applications, Amrita Banerjee
Dissertations
Graphene - monolayer or a few layers of graphite -- has proven to possess remarkable properties: large thermal conductivity, mechanical robustness, two-dimensional ultra large electronic mobility, chemical inertness and biochemical compatibility. Realization of some applications has been impeded by lack of a large area deposition method. By using a novel methodology to deposit graphene on solid and perforated substrates, various optoelectronic and biochemical elements have been demonstrated in this thesis: (1) graphene based transistors were fabricated and their characteristics were assessed. The mobility for such transistors exceeded 5000 cm2/V·s, much larger than their silicon based counterparts. Such attribute opens up …
Analytical And Computational Methods For The Study Of Rare Event Probabilities In Dispersive And Dissipative Waves, Daniel S. Cargill
Analytical And Computational Methods For The Study Of Rare Event Probabilities In Dispersive And Dissipative Waves, Daniel S. Cargill
Dissertations
The main focus of this dissertation is the application of importance sampling (IS) to calculate the probabilities associated with rare events in nonlinear, large-dimensional lightwave systems that are driven by noise, including models for fiber-based optical communication system and mode-locked lasers. Throughout the last decade, IS has emerged as a valuable tool for improving the efficiency of simulating rare events in such systems. In particular, it has shown great success in simulating various sources of transmission impairments found in optical communication systems, with examples ranging from large polarization fluctuations resulting from randomly varying fiber birefringence to large pulse-width fluctuations resulting …
High Aspect Ratio Electrodes For High Yield Electroporation Of Cells, Anil B. Shrirao
High Aspect Ratio Electrodes For High Yield Electroporation Of Cells, Anil B. Shrirao
Dissertations
Electroporation is a widely used process in cell biology studies. It uses an electric field to create pores on the cell membrane in order to either insert exogenous molecules inside the cells or disrupt the cell membrane to kill the cells. Current micro-fluidic electroporation devices use the planar electrodes situated at the bottom of a microchannel. These planar electrodes i) require a high voltage and ii) generate a nonuniform electric field which result in low yield of the electroporation. The standard silicon microfabrication technologies are not suitable to fabricate non-planar electrodes required to increase the yield of electroporation.

Skeletal muscles are proficient at healing from a variety of injuries. Healing occurs in two phases, early and late phase. Early phase involves healing the injured sarcolemma and restricting the spread of damage to the injured myofiber. Late phase of healing occurs a few days postinjury and involves interaction of injured myofibers with regenerative and inflammatory cells. Of the two phases, cellular and molecular processes involved in the early phase of healing are poorly understood. We have implemented an improved sarcolemmal proteomics approach together with in vivo labeling of proteins with modified amino acids in mice to study acute changes …

Insider, Outsider, Or Somewhere Between: The Impact Of Researchers’ Identities On The Community-Based Research Process, Katie Kerstetter
Insider, Outsider, Or Somewhere Between: The Impact Of Researchers’ Identities On The Community-Based Research Process, Katie Kerstetter
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Sociologists and qualitative researchers have engaged in an extensive debate about the merits of researchers being “outsiders” or “insiders” to the communities they study. Recent research has attempted to move beyond a strict outsider/insider dichotomy to emphasize the relative nature of researchers' identities, depending on the specific research context. Using the Institute for Community-Based Research in Mississippi as a case study, this article presents findings from qualitative interviews with academic researchers and community partners involved in four different research projects. These findings examine how researchers and community partners characterize researchers’ identities and the impact that those identities have on the …

Can Middle Managers Make A Telling Contribution To Strategy Development In An Organisation, Tony Kealy
Can Middle Managers Make A Telling Contribution To Strategy Development In An Organisation, Tony Kealy
Other resources
The role of the middle manager in organisations has been the topic of much research over the past number of decades. Many articles have been published claiming the potential for middle managers to contribute significantly to strategic development. This research attempts to test the validity of this theory with a practical grounding. This research is based on a qualitative study involving semi-structured interviews with four managers in different organisations. The project relies on established typologies for middle management involvement in strategy and middle management activity depending on organisational type.

Community-Based Research: Analysis Of Outcomes For Learning And Social Change: An Introduction, Anna M. Kleiner, Katie Kerstetter, John J. Green
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Broadly defined, community-based research (CBR) is a process of conducting research that embraces and integrates the participation and local knowledge of people in communities and organizations with the goal of informing efforts to achieve social change. Although several publications on CBR exist, they primarily focus on processes, methods, and tools for developing and implementing CBR projects. This special issue of the Journal of Rural Social Sciences builds from that knowledge base, analyzes the outcomes of real-world CBR projects, and assesses learning outcomes for students, faculty, organizations, and community residents. This introduction to the special issue provides an overview of the …

Lifting Spirits And Changing Lives: Analysis Of Outcomes From One Organizations Journey With Community-Based Research, Anna M. Kleiner, Sarah D. Walker
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, local nonprofit service providers in the Gulf Coast region faced numerous challenges responding to people’s immediate and long-term needs. Experiencing increased demand for services, limited resources, and vulnerability to future crises, several organizations commenced systematic planning, capacity development, and evaluation projects to help mitigate the effects of disaster and to promote long-term sustainability at the organizational and community levels. One such organization, Visions of Hope (VOH), Inc., in East Biloxi, Mississippi, participated in a collaborative community-based research (CBR) and evaluation process with a sociology, community development, and public health interdisciplinary team. Combining our academic and …
Community-Based Research And The Two Forms Of Social Change, Randy Stoecker
Community-Based Research And The Two Forms Of Social Change, Randy Stoecker
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
As community-based research (CBR) takes hold in academic settings, where there is vast expertise in producing research but a dearth of experience in producing practical outcomes, there is a risk that CBR will produce little of consequence. This paper begins by arguing that part of the problem is the result of CBR practitioners assuming that research is, in itself, causal. Yet it is only when research is embedded in an effective overall social change strategy that it matters. The present paper develops a model specifying the role of research in both local and broader social change strategies. The overall model …
Who Counts Reality And Why It Counts: Searching For A Community-Based Approach To Quantitative Inquiry, John J. Green
Who Counts Reality And Why It Counts: Searching For A Community-Based Approach To Quantitative Inquiry, John J. Green
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Community-based research is often discussed in a way that assumes an inherent qualitative methodological approach. This includes discussions of research design, data collection, and analysis. The limitations of quantitative research aside, ignoring this strategy for developing knowledge may result in many project outcomes going undocumented and unmeasured, and it may ultimately be disempowering for the people and organizations that community-based researchers seek to assist. On this basis, I argue that researchers should take a more holistic and pragmatic approach to methods and analysis, following efforts to go beyond the traditional qualitative-quantitative divide. Doing so will provide the basis for addressing …

Increasing Community Participation With Self-Organizing Meeting Processes, Philip H. Howard
Increasing Community Participation With Self-Organizing Meeting Processes, Philip H. Howard
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Involving many people in community-based research provides many benefits, such as more labor power and increased buy-in. Traditional meeting formats, however, are not well suited to attracting broad engagement. One way to address this challenge is to instead employ self-organizing meeting processes, which are designed to invite active participation from attendees, and do not predefine the agenda. This article describes three such processes, 1) Open Space Technology, 2) World Café, and 3) Dynamic Facilitation, followed by my observations on their advantages and disadvantages when employed in community-based research efforts. Their use requires giving up a great amount of control when …

In this analysis natural systems are posed to subsystemize in a manner facilitating both structured information/energy sharing and an entropy maximization process projecting a three-dimensional, spatial, outcome. Numerical simulations were first carried out to determine whether n × n input-output matrices could, once entropymaximized, project a three-dimensional Euclidean metric. Only 4 × 4 matrices could; a small proportion passed the test. Larger proportions passed when grouped random patterns on and within two- and three-dimensional forms were tested. Topographical patterns within 31 stream basin systems in the state of Kentucky, USA, were then similarly investigated, anticipating that the spatial configuration of …

In 2011 when I was given the opportunity of taking a research leave to explore a topic of my choice, I immediately thought of the changes in which we find information today both in our work and home lives. This was a natural reaction for me because ever since I had initiated my studies of librarianship and information science, I had been most interested in technology and its impact on libraries. This started with Professor Susan Artandi at Rutgers when I first learned of systems analysis and library automation and reached greater fruition under Professor Leon Montgomery's instruction on programming …
