A Profile Of Kentucky Medicaid Mental Health Diagnoses, 2000‐2010, Michael T. Childress

CBER Research Report

Good policy is dependent upon good data. This is especially true in health policy. Here we provide data on the number of Kentucky Medicaid beneficiaries who have received a mental or behavioral health diagnosis from 2000 to 2010. A Profile of Kentucky Medicaid Mental Health Diagnoses, 2000‐2010 provides information on the total number of individuals who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder as well as a year‐by‐year count of the 15 broad categories used to classify these diagnoses. Presented for children (age 18 and younger) and adults (19 and older), these data are organized at the state, regional, …

Analysis. Web pages from the organic links in search engine results pages were examined to see whether and how they had been tagged in Delicious. Only the Webpages tagged by …

The Difficulties Of Psychologcal Adjustment For Female Rape Victims: A Literature Review, Jackie Castille, Carolyn Barry Sep 2012

The Difficulties Of Psychologcal Adjustment For Female Rape Victims: A Literature Review, Jackie Castille, Carolyn Barry

Modern Psychological Studies

In this literature review we explore the various factors that can affect how well college-aged female rape victims adjust psychologically following a rape incident. Such factors include the following: how a victim cognitively labels the incident (i.e., as rape or something else); society's reaction to the victim's story, and subsequent identification of the victim as stigmatized or not; the prevalence of rape myths that impact stigmatization; and the presence of a support system in the form of friends who are willing to listen receptively to the victim. These factors together affect how well a victim is able to adjust psychologically …

The Crisis Of The American Law School, Paul Campos Sep 2012

The Crisis Of The American Law School, Paul Campos

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

The economist Herbert Stein once remarked that if something cannot go on forever, it will stop. Over the past four decades, the cost of legal education in America has seemed to belie this aphorism: it has gone up relentlessly. Private law school tuition increased by a factor of four in real, inflation-adjusted terms between 1971 and 2011, while resident tuition at public law schools has nearly quadrupled in real terms over just the past two decades. Meanwhile, for more than thirty years, the percentage of the American economy devoted to legal services has been shrinking. In 1978 the legal sector …

Put The Town On Notice: School District Liability And Lgbt Bullying Notification Laws, Yariv Pierce Sep 2012

Put The Town On Notice: School District Liability And Lgbt Bullying Notification Laws, Yariv Pierce

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

Congress could mitigate the problem of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) student bullying by requiring that teachers and school officials report all bullying incidents to their school district administrators. Many school districts are not aware of the prevalence of LGBT bullying and the extent to which each school protects, or fails to protect, its LGBT students compared to other harassed students. LGBT students often encounter difficulty demonstrating that their school district has a policy or custom of deliberate indifference toward their equal treatment when a school does not equally protect an LGBT student from peer-to-peer bullying because of the …

Absence Of Antiretroviral Therapy And Other Risk Factors For Morbidity And Mortality In Malaysian Compulsory Drug Detention And Rehabilitation Centers, J.J. Fu, A.R. Bazazi, F.L. Altice, M.N. Mohamed, A. Kamarulzaman

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Background: Throughout Asia, people who use drugs are confined in facilities referred to as compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation centers. The limited transparency and accessibility of these centers has posed a significant challenge to evaluating detainees and detention conditions directly. Despite HIV being highly prevalent in this type of confined setting, direct evaluation of detainees with HIV and their access to medical care has yet to be reported in the literature. Methods: We evaluated the health status of 100 adult male detainees with HIV and their access to medical care in the two largest Malaysian compulsory drug detention and rehabilitation centers …

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The building maintenance costs are rising rapidly from time to time due to poor maintenance in the past. In UK, total spending on building maintenance had a dramatically increase of 66% in the past 10 years. In Malaysia, the development plan allocation for repair and maintenance works in building sector increased from RM296 million during the Eighth Malaysian Plan to RM1,079 million during the Ninth Malaysian Plan. However, the development plan allocation for repair and maintenance works in the Tenth Malaysian Plan has decreased to RM500 million. The decrease of resource allocation for building maintenance activities urges the professions to …

Prospect And Sustainability Of Property Development On Highland And Steep Slope Areas In Selangor-Malaysia: Reexamining Of Regulations And Guidelines, A. Alias, K.N. Othman

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Governing property development has always requires a holistic approach in decision making. The legislations for property development that are in placed still could not ensure the sustainability of development pertinently on highland and steep slope areas. These areas need more detail consideration and approaches specifically in the development process, implementation as well as the monitoring aspect. In lieu of that, the current planning, development guidelines and regulations have been evaluated as to examine the effectiveness of the current development mechanism in ensuring sustainable highland and steep slope development. Evidences from the case study have shown that the weaknesses lie in …

The Need For Energy Efficiency Legislation In Malaysian Building Sector. A Comparative Study Of South East Asian Policies, S. Zaid, P. Graham Sep 2012

The Need For Energy Efficiency Legislation In Malaysian Building Sector. A Comparative Study Of South East Asian Policies, S. Zaid, P. Graham

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

The Malaysian building sector approximately consumes 53% of national electricity generated, and emits 5,301 ktons of greenhouse gases (GHG) with an annual growth rate of 6.4%. While voluntary codes of practice for energy efficiency and use or renewable energy exist for non-residential buildings, Malaysia has yet to adopt mandatory energy efficiency legislation for its building sector. Mandatory building energy performance codes have been shown to be the most cost-efficient and effective policy instruments for reducing building energy-related greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, without mandatory and comprehensive energy efficiency policy, Malaysia faces locking in substantial inefficiencies, and higher than necessary climate change …

The Building Surveyor (BS) is a qualified person who performs Building Control works and other activities related to construction which involves an organised preparatory process of physical development, supervision of construction quality and Physical conditions of the building. BS plays a vital role in the building industry, especially in developed countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia. However, the awareness on the importance of BSs in Malaysia is still low. Most of the BS graduates work in various fields after they have graduated. The competencies and professional level of BS graduates has always been debated by other professionals in …

The Growth And Prospects For The Oil Palm Plantation Industry In Indonesia, H. Varkkey Sep 2012

The Growth And Prospects For The Oil Palm Plantation Industry In Indonesia, H. Varkkey

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

This article provides a historical political economy perspective of the Indonesian oil palm plantation sector. It aims to shed light on the process of how Indonesia took over from Malaysia in becoming the world’s current largest producer of palm oil. This article argues that the regional trend of state-led development that relied on agribusiness as a major sector played a major role in the development of oil palm as an important crop in the region, especially in Malaysia and Indonesia. Indonesia specifically promoted and encouraged the expansion of oil palm as a way to fulfill state developmental aims; identifying it …

Age, Period And Cohort Effects On Social Capital, Philip Schwadel, Mike Stout Sep 2012

Age, Period And Cohort Effects On Social Capital, Philip Schwadel, Mike Stout

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Researchers hypothesize that social capital in the United States is not just declining, but that it is declining across generations or birth cohorts. Testing this proposition, we examine changes in social capital using age-period-cohort intrinsic estimator models. Results from analyses of 1972–2010 General Social Survey data show 1) that informal association with neighbors declined across periods while informal association with friends outside of the neighborhood increased across birth cohorts; 2) that formal association was comparatively stable with the exception of relatively high levels of formal association among the early 1920s and early 1930s birth cohorts; and 3) that trust declined …

An Analysis Of The Changing Demographics Of Individuals With Spinal Cord Injury Who Received State Vocational Rehabilitation Services Between 2004 And 2008, Barbara A. Schoen, Michael J. Leahy

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is considered to be a complex disability; impacting far more than mobility and creating several barriers to employment. To better understand dynamic factors related to employment over time this study analyzed the changing demographics of consumers with spinal cord injury (SCI) who received state vocational rehabilitation services between 2004 and 2008. The entire population of 23,135 individuals with an SCI who closed in status 26 (employment outcome) or 28 (no employment outcome) between 2004 and 2008 were included in the study. Several changes were observed. There was a disproportionate decline in the number of consumers with …

Exploring The Experiences Of Former Alternative Education Participants: Case Studies, Shirley L. Washington-Cobb Sep 2012

Exploring The Experiences Of Former Alternative Education Participants: Case Studies, Shirley L. Washington-Cobb

Dissertations

Alternative education has become an integral program, in one form or another throughout most school districts in the United States. Alternative education is a very complex and controversial issue that is best understood through the stories of former alternative education students looking back on their lived experiences. Children in the alternative education program studied here were generally those who did not fit into a general education program due to behavior problems or lack of academic success. The purpose of the study was to investigate alternative education primarily through in-depth interviews and case studies of 18 previous alternative education students who …

Book Review - Critical Voices In Teacher Education: Teaching For Social Justice In Conservative Times, Ivan Snook Sep 2012

Book Review - Critical Voices In Teacher Education: Teaching For Social Justice In Conservative Times, Ivan Snook

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Barry Down & John Smyth (eds). New York, London: Springer Dordrecht Heidelberg, 2012.

The central theme of this volume is that, in recent decades, education in Australia (and many other countries) has been taken over by a managerialist ideology which has “damaged the profession of teaching by reducing teacher autonomy, deskilling teachers’ work, standardising curricula and introducing prefab lessons and scripted curricula”(p 3).

Professional Pathways Of Aboriginal Early Childhood Teachers: Intersections Of Community, Indigeneity, And Complexity, Alma Fleet, Kerrie Wechmann, Ryan Whitworth

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Little information is available about the employment trajectories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander peoples pursuing university professional qualifications. This article describes a context in which cultural space, issues of identity, pragmatics of employment, family and community and a bureaucratic regulatory environment intersect to create scenarios that are multi-facetted and layered in complexity. As has been demonstrated clearly in other arenas (Richardson & Watt, 2006), the move towards professional teacher education qualification is not linear or straightforward. To add to the knowledge base in this area, the focus in this study is on university graduates of a teacher education degree …
