No-Shows To Primary Care Appointments: Subsequent Acute Care Utilization Among Diabetic Patients, Lynn A. Nuti, Mark Lawley, Ayten Turkcan, Zhiyi Tian, Lingsong Zhang, Karen Chang, Deanna R. Willis, Laura P. Sands Sep 2012

No-Shows To Primary Care Appointments: Subsequent Acute Care Utilization Among Diabetic Patients, Lynn A. Nuti, Mark Lawley, Ayten Turkcan, Zhiyi Tian, Lingsong Zhang, Karen Chang, Deanna R. Willis, Laura P. Sands

School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background

Patients who no-show to primary care appointments interrupt clinicians’ efforts to provide continuity of care. Prior literature reveals no-shows among diabetic patients are common. The purpose of this study is to assess whether no-shows to primary care appointments are associated with increased risk of future emergency department (ED) visits or hospital admissions among diabetics.

Methods

A prospective cohort study was conducted using data from 8,787 adult diabetic patients attending outpatient clinics associated with a medical center in Indiana. The outcomes examined were hospital admissions or ED visits in the 6 months (182 days) following the patient’s last scheduled primary …

Packing Tight Hamilton Cycles In Uniform Hypergraphs, Deepak Bal, Alan Frieze Sep 2012

Packing Tight Hamilton Cycles In Uniform Hypergraphs, Deepak Bal, Alan Frieze

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We say that a k-uniform hypergraph C is a Hamilton cycle of type l, for some 1 ≤ l ≤ k, if there exists a cyclic ordering of the vertices of C such that every edge consists of k consecutive vertices, and for every pair of consecutive edges E i-1\E i in C (in the natural ordering of the edges) we have |E i-1 \ E i| = l. We define a class of (ε, p)-regular hypergraphs, that includes random hypergraphs, for which we can prove the existence of a decomposition of almost all edges into type l Hamilton cycles, …

The Cyclase-Associated Protein Cap1 Is Important For Proper Regulation Of Infection-Related Morphogenesis In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Xiaoying Zhou, Haifeng Zhang, Guotian Li, Brian Shaw, Jin-Rong Xu Sep 2012

The Cyclase-Associated Protein Cap1 Is Important For Proper Regulation Of Infection-Related Morphogenesis In Magnaporthe Oryzae., Xiaoying Zhou, Haifeng Zhang, Guotian Li, Brian Shaw, Jin-Rong Xu

Department of Botany and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Surface recognition and penetration are critical steps in the infection cycle of many plant pathogenic fungi. In Magnaporthe oryzae, cAMP signaling is involved in surface recognition and pathogenesis. Deletion of the MAC1 adenylate cyclase gene affected appressorium formation and plant infection. In this study, we used the affinity purification approach to identify proteins that are associated with Mac1 in vivo. One of the Mac1-interacting proteins is the adenylate cyclase-associated protein named Cap1. CAP genes are well-conserved in phytopathogenic fungi but none of them have been functionally characterized. Deletion of CAP1 blocked the effects of a dominant RAS2 allele …

Pathology, East Africa

Background: Despite strong evidence for the effectiveness of anti-retroviral therapy for improving the health of women living with HIV and for the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), HIV persists as a major maternal and child health problem in sub-Saharan Africa. In most settings antenatal care (ANC) services and HIV treatment services are offered in separate clinics. Integrating these services may result in better uptake of services, reduction of the time to treatment initiation, better adherence, and reduction of stigma.

Methodology/Principal Findings: A prospective cluster randomized controlled trial design was used to evaluate the effects of integrating HIV treatment into ANC …

Motivation And Leadership Of Financial Advisor Associates In The Financial Services Industry, James A. Mckenzie Sep 2012

Motivation And Leadership Of Financial Advisor Associates In The Financial Services Industry, James A. Mckenzie

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The purpose of this study was to apply the platform of existing knowledge and ideas in the area of sales management with regard to the motivation of financial advisor associates (FAAs) in the financial services industry in the United States. The major theories examined in this study were: social exchange theory, leader member exchange, expectancy theory, transformational leadership, and transactional leadership. The primary focus of this non-experimental, quantitative, explanatory (correlational) research was the relationships among the independent variables (psychological climate of the workplace, the branch manager's leadership style, the demographic factors and work experience of the FAAs), and the dependent …

Causal Modeling, Reversibility, And Logics Of Counterfactuals, Wai Yin Lam Sep 2012

Causal Modeling, Reversibility, And Logics Of Counterfactuals, Wai Yin Lam

Lingnan Theses

This thesis studies Judea Pearl’s logic of counterfactuals derived from the causal modeling framework, in comparison to the influential Stanlnaker-Lewis counterfactual logics.

My study focuses on a characteristic principle in Pearl’s logic, named reversibility. The principle, as Pearl pointed out, goes beyond Lewis’s logic. Indeed, it also goes beyond the stronger logic of Stanlnaker, which is more analogous to Pearl’s logic. The first result of this thesis is an extension of Stanlnaker’s logic incorporating reversibility. It will be observed that the translation of reversibility from Pearl’s language to the standard language for conditional logic deserves some attention. In particular, a …

Self-Love And Self-Respect In The Meaningful Life, Erica Stonestreet Sep 2012

Self-Love And Self-Respect In The Meaningful Life, Erica Stonestreet

Forum Lectures

Most people have the sense that there's something wrong with living a meaningless life. Since most meaningless lives seem morally blameless, however, it's not obvious exactly what is wrong with it. Starting with a plausible conception of a meaningful life as a life engaged with values beyond oneself, I suggest that the problem is that someone living outside of this conception is not according herself a kind of recognition she deserves as a human being. Comparing self-respect and self-love as candidates for this recognition, I argue that lacking self-love is actually the more fitting explanation for what goes wrong in …

Through A Feminist Lens: Language, Power And Identity In Catalan Nationalism, Christine Gallagher Kearney Sep 2012

Through A Feminist Lens: Language, Power And Identity In Catalan Nationalism, Christine Gallagher Kearney

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

The goal for my master’s thesis is to understand how the working class women of Catalunya (specifically women that lived in the small farming villages in the region of Les Garrigues),contributed to the survival of Catalan. Catalunya is an autonomous region of Spain that endured more than three decades of the Francisco Franco dictatorship (1934-1975) that attempted to eradicate the Catalan language and culture. As stated by Everly (2003): “[…] the regional exile of Catalunya from the rest of Spain acts as a backdrop provoking women to go a step further and experiment with their own sense of gender separation …
