An Impulsive Delay Differential Inequality And Applications, Xiaodi Li, Martin Bohner Sep 2012

An Impulsive Delay Differential Inequality And Applications, Xiaodi Li, Martin Bohner

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

An impulsive delay differential inequality is formulated in this paper. an estimate of the rate of decay of solutions to this inequality is obtained. It can be applied to the study of dynamical behavior of delay differential equations from the impulsive control point of view. as an application, we consider a class of impulsive control systems with time-varying delays and establish a sufficient condition to guarantee the global exponential stability. It is shown that, via proper impulsive control law, a linear delay differential system can be exponentially stabilized even if it is initially unstable. a numerical example is given to …

Acid phosphatase (ACP1) is a polymorphic enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of flavinmononucleotide (FMN) to riboflavin and regulates the cellular concentration of flavin-adeninedinucleotide (FAD) and, consequently, energy metabolism. Its activity is modulated by adenosine deaminase (ADA1) genotype. Aim of our work is to verify whether individuals with a high proportion of ACP1 f isozyme and carrying ADA*2 allele, displaying the highest phosphatase activity, may have a higher life expectancy. Genomic DNA was extracted from peripheral blood of 569 females and 509 males (18-106 years) randomly recruited from Central Italy. These samples were subdivided into three sexspecific age groups …

Caregivers’ Incongruence: Emotional Strain In Caring For Persons With Stroke, Linda L. Pierce, Teresa L. Thompson, Amy L. Govoni, Victoria Steiner Sep 2012

Caregivers’ Incongruence: Emotional Strain In Caring For Persons With Stroke, Linda L. Pierce, Teresa L. Thompson, Amy L. Govoni, Victoria Steiner

Nursing Faculty Publications

Purpose:Guided by Friedemann's framework, the purpose of this study was to examine the dimensions of new family caregivers’ emotional strain in caring for persons with stroke. Method: Seventy-three caregivers who were new to that role participated in an interview every 2 weeks for a year as part of a NIH project. Of these caregivers, 36 participants were randomly assigned and had access to a Web-based intervention and its e-mail discussion. In this secondary data analysis, 2,148 e-mail discussion messages plus 2,455 narrative interview entries were used to examine dimensions of caregivers’ emotional strain. Rigorous content analysis was applied to these …

Feeding Fear? : An Examination Of The Representation Of Crime News In Contemporary Irish Print Media, Eimear Rabbitte

Dissertations

Crime is a timeless phenomenon. Its inherent ability to both fascinate and appal has made reporting of crime an intrinsic part of newspapers since the dawn of the printing press. The interest surrounding crime validates the need for accurate and consistent reporting. This renders it a regular feature of the daily news cycle and thus a fixture in our everyday lives. Reading or hearing about it through the news media is the only contact that many people will have with crime throughout their lives. Therefore, the manner in which crime news is both presented and portrayed to the general public …

Behavioral Antitrust And Monopolization, Maurice Stucke Sep 2012

Behavioral Antitrust And Monopolization, Maurice Stucke

Scholarly Works

One hot topic is whether Google has violated the antitrust laws. Another important topic is how behavioral economics can enrich antitrust policy. This Essay examines two implications of behavioral economics on antitrust monopolization law. The Essay first discusses trial-and-error learning as an entry barrier. This is timely given the current debate over the entry barriers of the search engine market.

The Essay next discusses behavioral exploitation to maintain a monopoly. The behavioral economics literature can help explain the European Commission’s tying claims against Microsoft, why the Commission’s original remedy failed, and the benefits and risks of the Commission’s remedy involving …

Is Earnings Nonresponse Ignorable?, Christopher R. Bollinger, Barry T. Hirsch Sep 2012

Is Earnings Nonresponse Ignorable?, Christopher R. Bollinger, Barry T. Hirsch

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Earnings nonresponse in the Current Population Survey is roughly 30% in the monthly surveys and 20% in the March survey. If nonresponse is ignorable, unbiased estimates can be achieved by omitting nonrespondents. Little is known about whether CPS nonresponse is ignorable. Using sample frame measures to identify selection, we find clear-cut evidence among men but limited evidence among women for negative selection into response. Wage equation slope coefficients are affected little by selection but because of intercept shifts, wages for men and to a lesser extent women are understated, as are gender gaps. Selection is least severe among household heads.

Oxygen Glucose Deprivation In Rat Hippocampal Slice Cultures Results In Alterations In Carnitine Homeostasis And Mitochondrial Dysfunction, Thomas Rau, Qing Lu, Shruti Sharma, Xutong Sun, Gregory Leary, Matthew L. Beckman, Yal Hou, Mark S. Wainwright, Michael P. Kavanaugh, David J. Poulsen, Stephen M. Black

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Mitochondrial dysfunction characterized by depolarization of mitochondrial membranes and the initiation of mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis are pathological responses to hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the neonatal brain. Carnitine metabolism directly supports mitochondrial metabolism by shuttling long chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for beta-oxidation. Our previous studies have shown that HI disrupts carnitine homeostasis in neonatal rats and that L-carnitine can be neuroprotective. Thus, this study was undertaken to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which HI alters carnitine metabolism and to begin to elucidate the mechanism underlying the neuroprotective effect of L-carnitine (LCAR) supplementation. Utilizing neonatal rat hippocampal slice cultures we …

Farm To School In Mississippi: A Step-By-Step Guide To Purchasing Mississippi Products, Harvard Law School Food Law And Policy Clinic, Harvard Law School Mississippi Delta Project

Delta Directions: Publications

In a state with rich agricultural resources, lasting traditions of family farming, and a climate conducive to year-long growing seasons, why are Mississippi’s school children eating fruits and vegetables predominantly shipped from other states and countries? Farm to school programs that connect Mississippi farmers with schools offer a promising way to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for students while improving the economic viability of local farms. This step-by-step purchasing guide aims to help school food service directors in Mississippi start to purchase locally grown foods to be served in school meals.
