The Advanced Energetic Pair Telescope (AdEPT) is being developed at GSFC as a future NASA MIDEX mission to explore the medium-energy (5–200 MeV) gamma-ray range. The enabling technology for AdEPT is the Three- Dimensional Track Imager (3-DTI), a gaseous time projection chamber. The high spatial resolution 3-D electron tracking of 3-DTI enables AdEPT to achieve high angular resolution gamma-ray imaging via pair production and triplet production (pair production on electrons) in the medium-energy range. The low density and high spatial resolution of 3-DTI allows the electron positron track directions to be measured before they are dominated by Coulomb scattering. Further, …

Genetic Risk Factors For Type 2 Diabetes: A Trans-Regulatory Genetic Architecture?, Steven C. Elbein, Eric R. Gamazon, Swapan K. Das, Neda Rasouli, Philip A. Kern, Nancy J. Cox

Clinical and Translational Science Faculty Publications

To date, 68 loci have been associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D) or glucose homeostasis traits. We report here the results of experiments aimed at functionally characterizing the SNPs replicated for T2D and glucose traits. We sought to determine whether these loci were associated with transcript levels in adipose, muscle, liver, lymphocytes, and pancreatic β-cells. We found an excess of trans, rather than cis, associations among these SNPs in comparison to what was expected in adipose and muscle. Among transcripts differentially expressed (FDR < 0.05) between muscle or adipose cells of insulin-sensitive individuals and those of insulin-resistant individuals (matched on BMI), trans-regulated transcripts, in contrast to the cis-regulated ones, were enriched. Our research considers the efficiency of the work of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the area of international development. Specifically it asks the question of whether reducing the costs of gathering information on other NGO projects increases NGOs’ propensity to coordinate among each other. We predict that decreasing information costs associated with communication gives greater incentive to pursue coordination. To test this hypothesis, we conduct a randomized field experiment in which we invite randomly assigned NGOs to use an online mapping tool providing information about NGO activities across Uganda and India. We have determined the angular diameters of two metal-poor stars, HD 122563 and Gmb 1830, using CHARA and Palomar Testbed Interferometer observations. For the giant star HD 122563, we derive an angular diameter θ3D = 0.940 ± 0.011 milliarcseconds (mas) using limb-darkening from 3D convection simulations and for the dwarf star Gmb 1830 (HD 103095) we obtain a 1D limb-darkened angular diameter θ1D = 0.679 ± 0.007 mas. Coupling the angular diameters with photometry yields effective temperatures with precisions better than 55 K (Teff = 4598 ± 41 K and 4818 ± 54 K - for the giant and the …

Adults who remain single after the age society deems appropriate have faced considerable social stigma and discrimination throughout history and negative attitudes toward singles appear to persist. Research examining the experiences of single adults has been limited, focusing on the reflections of older singles, and largely heterosexual samples. To this end, the current study Will examine attitudes toward singlehood among heterosexual men and women and gay men and lesbian women within the context of participants' life role preferences for career choices and parenting. Results indicate women endorse more positive attitudes toward current singlehood, the possibility of future singlehood, and single …
