Physics & Astronomy Faculty Works

We report the discovery of KELT-2Ab, a hot Jupiter transiting the bright (V = 8.77) primary star of the HD 42176 binary system. The host is a slightly evolved late F-star likely in the very short-lived "blue-hook" stage of evolution, with T-eff = 6148 +/- 48 K, log g = 4.030(-0.026)(+0.015) and [Fe/H] = 0.034 +/- 0.78. The inferred stellar mass is M-* = 1.314(-0.060)(+0.063) M-circle dot and the star has a relatively large radius of R-* = 1.836(-0.046)(+0.066) R-circle dot. The planet is a typical hot Jupiter with period 4.1137913 +/- 0.00001 days and a mass of M-P = …

Recent Advances In Integrating Owl And Rules, Matthias Knorr, David Carral Martinez, Pascal Hitzler, Adila A. Krisnadhi, Frederick Maier, Cong Wang

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

As part of the quest for a unifying logic for the Semantic Web Technology Stack, a central issue is finding suitable ways of integrating description logics based on the Web Ontology Language (OWL) with rule-based approaches based on logic programming. Such integration is difficult since naive approaches typically result in the violation of one or more desirable design principles. For example, while both OWL 2 DL and RIF Core (a dialect of the Rule Interchange Format RIF) are decidable, their naive union is not, unless carefully chosen syntactic restrictions are applied.

We report on recent advances and ongoing work by …

Hunting For Qr Codes: Linking Students To The Music Collection, Veronica A. Wells Sep 2012

Hunting For Qr Codes: Linking Students To The Music Collection, Veronica A. Wells

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Libraries are exploring the use of Quick Response (QR) codes, to market to and connect users with libraries' services. The University of the Pacific has been experimenting with QR codes in an innovative way: to introduce first-year music majors to the physical music library materials via a QR code scavenger hunt. This article discusses the library literature on QR codes and scavenger hunts, as well as the University of the Pacific's QR code scavenger hunt from creation to assessment. Additionally, recommendations are given for designing a similar pedagogical tool at your library.

Coupling Academia And Civic Responsibility: Impact Of Incorporating Service-Learning Into Selected Courses, Cheri James Sep 2012

Coupling Academia And Civic Responsibility: Impact Of Incorporating Service-Learning Into Selected Courses, Cheri James

Theses and Dissertations

The demand on universities across America to produce civic-minded students is ever increasing. These demands are necessary to answer the constantly evolving needs of society due to advancing technology, the economy, war, politics, and social media. Volunteerism and community engagement can offer students the opportunity for connecting to their university and the surrounding community by presenting a reciprocal approach to meeting students' needs for involvement, fulfilling the university mission statement, and providing valuable service to the local community. This study investigated the service-learning practices at Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ. The findings suggest there is a strong level of agreement between …

The Effectiveness Of Total Physical Response Storytelling For Language Learning With Special Education Students, Laura Holleny Sep 2012

The Effectiveness Of Total Physical Response Storytelling For Language Learning With Special Education Students, Laura Holleny

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory research was to ascertain the validity of the Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) language learning method in comparison with "traditional" language learning methods. The research focused on high school students (n= 44) in grades 9-12 with mild learning disabilities such as specific learning disorder, other health impairment, communication impairment, and multiple disabilities. Students varied greatly with the successes of both language learning methods. There were four classes that participated in the study and half of the classes performed better on assessments when taught through TPRS techniques. The other classes achieved higher scores when "traditional" language …

Effect Of Repeatedly Heated Palm Olein On Blood Pressure Regulating Enzymes Activity And Lipid Peroxidation In Rats, X.F. Leong, J. Salimon, Mohd Rais Mustafa, K. Jaarin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Background: Oxidative stress is associated with the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases. Deep-fat frying process of dietary cooking oil plays a role in the generation of free radicals. Palm olein heated to 180°C temperature was tested for its effect on the activity of blood pressure regulating enzymes and lipid peroxidation. Methods: Forty-two adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were equally assigned into six groups. First group was fed with normal rat chow as control group, and the subsequent groups were fed with rat chow fortified with 15% weight/weight of fresh palm olein, palm olein heated once, palm olein heated twice, palm olein heated …
