Scalpels V. Hammers: Mitgating Exempt Well Impacts, Nathan S. Bracken Sep 2012

Scalpels V. Hammers: Mitgating Exempt Well Impacts, Nathan S. Bracken

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Most western states allow landowners to withdraw certain amounts of groundwater for specified purposes without obtaining a water right permit. As water demands increase in the West, some developers are using exempt wells to supply water to residential developments without acquiring the permits and water rights needed to build public water supply systems. This has led to concerns that the cumulative impact of these wells could impair senior water rights, create environmental problems, and threaten water quality in some areas. This article explores the considerations associated with mitigating exempt well impacts and argues that surgical approaches focused on specific issues …

Role Of Propionates In Substrate Binding To Heme Oxygenase From Neisseria Meningitidis: A Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study, Dungeng Peng, Li Hua Ma, Kevin M. Smith, Xuhong Zhang, Michihiko Sato, Gerd N. La Mar

Faculty Publications

Heme oxygenase (HO) cleaves hemin into biliverdin, iron, and CO. For mammalian HOs, both native hemin propionates are required for substrate binding and activity. The HO from the pathogenic bacterium Neisseria meningitidis (NmHO) possesses a crystallographically undetected C-terminal fragment that by solution 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is found to fold and interact with the active site. One of the substrate propionates has been proposed to form a salt bridge to the C-terminus rather than to the conventional buried cationic side chain in other HOs. Moreover, the C-terminal dipeptide Arg208His209 cleaves spontaneously over ∼24 h at a rate dependent on …

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman Sep 2012

Time-Dependent Statistical And Correlation Properties Of Neural Signals During Handwriting, Valery I. Rupasov, Mikhail A. Lebedev, Joseph S. Erlichman, Stephen L. Lee, James C. Leiter, Michael Linderman

Dartmouth Scholarship

To elucidate the cortical control of handwriting, we examined time-dependent statistical and correlational properties of simultaneously recorded 64-channel electroencephalograms (EEGs) and electromyograms (EMGs) of intrinsic hand muscles. We introduced a statistical method, which offered advantages compared to conventional coherence methods. In contrast to coherence methods, which operate in the frequency domain, our method enabled us to study the functional association between different neural regions in the time domain. In our experiments, subjects performed about 400 stereotypical trials during which they wrote a single character. These trials provided time-dependent EMG and EEG data capturing different handwriting epochs. The set of trials …

Fabrication Of Zno Nanorod-Based Hydrogen Gas Nanosensor, Lee Chow, Guangyu Chia, Oleg Lupan Sep 2012

Fabrication Of Zno Nanorod-Based Hydrogen Gas Nanosensor, Lee Chow, Guangyu Chia, Oleg Lupan

UCF Patents

The nanofabrication of a hydrogen nanosensor from single ZnO branched nanorods using in-situ lift-out technique, performed in the chamber of a focused ion beam (FIB) system is disclosed. A self-assembled ZnO branched nanorod has been grown by a cost-effective and fast synthesis route using an aqueous solution deposition method and rapid thermal processing. The properties of the ZnO nanorod structures were analyzed by X-ray difhction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersion X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and micro-Raman spectroscopy. High quality ZnO nanorods were obtained with a 90% success rate for building nanodevices. The fabricated nanosensor can gauge 150 ppm hydrogen …
