Queensland Health is responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services within Queensland. Queensland is the second largest state in Australia covering 700,000 square miles (2/12; times the size of Texas, USA)1. Some health professionals, particularly in rural / remote areas, providing maternal and neonatal health care do not have access to specialist nurse education resources. The Queensland Maternity and Neonatal Clinical Guidelines Program trialled an education package to increase clinician knowledge of clinical guideline content. The package was available as a self directed learning tool or sessions facilitated by a local champion. As a result of positive feedback …
Examining Tobacco Cessation Among Healthcare Providers Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Victoria H. Bierman
Examining Tobacco Cessation Among Healthcare Providers Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior, Victoria H. Bierman
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Tobacco cessation is vital in reducing the health consequences associated with smoking. Personal tobacco use by healthcare providers creates a significant barrier to promoting smoking cessation. Although many acknowledge the health consequences of smoking, cessation is difficult with high relapse rates. Multiple barriers hinder smoking cessation and defense mechanisms are often engaged. The purpose of this study was to examine beliefs and predict intentions of healthcare providers to quit smoking using the theory of planned behavior (TPB).
Methods: The research was a descriptive correlational design using a survey method. The primary analyses included multiple linear regressions and path analysis. …

An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar
An Approach To Data Management And Evaluation For Evidence-Based Practice Projects, Martha Sylvia, Mary F. Terhaar
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Strong data management skills are essential for effective evaluation of evidence-based practice project implementation. Completion of a scholarly evidence-based project requires application of data management skills in order to understand and address a complex practice, process, or systems problem; develop, implement and monitor an innovative evidence-based intervention to address that problem; and evaluate the outcomes. In fact, EBP projects may require stronger data management skills than those required in traditional research because they often make use of data generated for direct care or administrative purposes that require sophisticated data cleansing and manipulation techniques. These projects commonly use observational study techniques …
Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres
Social Network Analysis As A Method For Nursing Research, Anne L. Ersig, Anthony Paik, Lioness Ayres
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Nursing research often relies on data obtained from individuals in an effort to understand human experiences of health and illness. These individual experiences do not occur in isolation; instead, they take place within larger contexts, such as families, social groups, and schools or communities. These organizations function as complex adaptive systems (CAS), which resist reduction into simple cause-and-effect relationships. Investigating such systems, including collection of data from multiple individuals, requires flexible and adaptable research methods. Social network analysis (SNA) facilitates data collection from multiple individuals in the same context (e.g., a family, an organization), examination of interactions among individuals, …

Effect Of Nurses Living Fit? Exercise And Nutrition Intervention On Body Mass Index In Nurses, Karen Gabel Speroni
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Overweight and obesity are increasing at alarming rates worldwide. In the healthcare setting, administrators are searching for evidence-based programs featuring interventions on healthy living to enable weight loss in overweight workers and maintenance of normal weight. This is especially true among professional nurses who often become "role models" for patients affected by illnesses induced by overweight status. The hospital-based Nurses Living Fit & trade; (NLF) intervention was developed and researched by nurses to decrease overweight in nurses.
Methods: This prospective, quasi-experimental, multi-center study evaluated changes in Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference between NLF and contrast nurse group …

Nursing Students' Perceptions Of Satisfaction And Self-Confidence With High Fidelity Simulation, Geraldine M. Berkvam
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Research has been conducted about the various features of simulation which contribute to successful learning experiences of students. However, there is little research about students' perceptions of their satisfaction and self-confidence in learning when simulation is used as a teaching strategy. This study was designed to determine if high fidelity clinical simulation provided nursing students with learning experiences which promoted satisfaction and self-confidence in their preparation for clinical practice. The theoretical framework for the design of this study was Alfred Bandura's Social Cognitive Learning Theory.
Methods: A questionnaire was administered to nursing students after completion of medical-surgical clinical simulation …

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: This paper explores clinical communication interventions for undergraduate nursing students with English as a second language (ESL) within a multicampus program at the University of Western Sydney. Students are expected to communicate effectively with patients, nurses, and other health care professionals. Limited oral communication skills in English can cause anxiety for ESL nursing students and this can negatively impact on learning in a clinical setting. In addition, students may experience difficulties in using nursing terminology and appropriate expressions for interactions in this setting. The development of communication skills that are adequate for clinical practice can take intensive instruction and …

Respiratory Monitoring Practices During Procedural Sedation And Analgesia In The Cardiac Catheterisation Lab Could Be Enhanced By Using Capnography To Assess Ventilation, Aaron W. Conway, John X. Rolley, Paul Fulbrook, Karen Page
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Capnography is very effective in detecting depressed respiration during procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) of non-ventilated patients. However, nurses do not routinely use this technology in the cardiac catheterisation lab (CCL). Accordingly, we sought to analyse current practices to ascertain the role that capnography may contribute to this setting.
Methods: Retrospective medical record audit of procedures performed in the CCL of one private hospital in May and June 2010.
Results: Nurses administered PSA during 154/397 (38.8%) procedures, consisting of: 53/211 (25.1%) coronary angiographies; 47/84 (56.0%) percutaneous coronary interventions; 7/15 (46.7%) electrophysiology study and radiofrequency ablations; 35/52 (%) cardiac pacemaker …

Long-Term Effect Of The Self-Management, Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program On Quality Of Life In Patients With Advanced Breast Cancer Treated With High Dose Chemotherapy, Fannie Gaston-Johansson
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Purpose: Due to treatment advances, women with breast cancer have improved survival rates. Longer survival has created a need for coping interventions to assist stress reduction and long term symptoms and improve quality of life (QOL). Prior coping research has been conducted during treatment with one to two coping strategies rather than a comprehensive coping self-management approach. The purpose of this study was to determine differences between QOL in a Comprehensive Coping Strategy Program (CCSP) treated and control group of breast cancer patients one year after treatment. The significance is that the CCSP is expected to reduce stress and improves …
