Perlecan Domain V Induces Vegf Secretion In Brain Endothelial Cells Through Integrin Α5Β1 And Erk-Dependent Signaling Pathways, Douglas N. Clarke, Abraham Al Ahmad, Boyeon Lee, Christi Parham, Lisa Auckland, Andrezj Fertala, Michael Kahle, Courtney S. Shaw, Jill Roberts, Gregory J. Bix Sep 2012

Perlecan Domain V Induces Vegf Secretion In Brain Endothelial Cells Through Integrin Α5Β1 And Erk-Dependent Signaling Pathways, Douglas N. Clarke, Abraham Al Ahmad, Boyeon Lee, Christi Parham, Lisa Auckland, Andrezj Fertala, Michael Kahle, Courtney S. Shaw, Jill Roberts, Gregory J. Bix

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications

Perlecan Domain V (DV) promotes brain angiogenesis by inducing VEGF release from brain endothelial cells (BECs) following stroke. In this study, we define the specific mechanism of DV interaction with the α(5)β(1) integrin, identify the downstream signal transduction pathway, and further investigate the functional significance of resultant VEGF release. Interestingly, we found that the LG3 portion of DV, which has been suggested to possess most of DV's angio-modulatory activity outside of the brain, binds poorly to α(5)β(1) and induces less BEC proliferation compared to full length DV. Additionally, we implicate DV's DGR sequence as an important element for the interaction …

Educational Salvation: Integrating Critical Spirituality In Educational Leadership, Carlos R. Mccray, Floyd D. Beachum, Christopher Yawn Sep 2012

Educational Salvation: Integrating Critical Spirituality In Educational Leadership, Carlos R. Mccray, Floyd D. Beachum, Christopher Yawn

Journal of Catholic Education

Improving education for students in K-12 urban settings remains a slow-paced and difficult task, with many successes in student learning being episodic at best. Disconnect between government mandates to improve schools and persistent societal issues of poverty and inequity act to increase stress on teachers and educational leaders working in urban schools. Drawing upon the strengths of the African-American community and its collective historical experiences, this study explores creative ways to integrate spirituality in the education of students in urban schools. The authors begin by addressing the contextual and structural issues facing urban schools. They then explain the benefits of …

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel Collopy, Connie Bowman, David A. Taylor Sep 2012

The Educational Achievement Gap As A Social Justice Issue For Teacher Educators, Rachel Collopy, Connie Bowman, David A. Taylor

Journal of Catholic Education

The educational achievement gap is a critical social justice issue. Catholic and Marianist conceptions of social justice in particular call people to work with others in their spheres of life to transform institutions in order to further human rights while promoting the common good. Drawing on key elements of Catholic teaching on social justice, we argue that the achievement gap constitutes a social injustice. We then offer a case illustrating collaboration between university-based teacher educators and school faculty to address the achievement gap through transforming the institutions of school and of teacher preparation. The Dayton Early College Academy (DECA), founded …

School Turnaround: Cristo Rey Boston High School Case Study, Jeffrey Thielman

Journal of Catholic Education

The mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind Law, including the threat of closing a school for underperformance, have led to multiple public school turnaround attempts. Because turnaround is a relatively new area of focus in education, there is limited research on what does and does not work, and even the definition of turnaround is a work in progress. The research that is available is almost exclusively from the public school sector. This article gives some history and context for school turnarounds currently taking place in the United States and describes the turnaround of a Catholic, inner-city high school …

Clarificative Evaluation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Heart Failure Clinic, Jennifer Mccaffery Sep 2012

Clarificative Evaluation Of A Nurse Practitioner-Led Heart Failure Clinic, Jennifer Mccaffery

DNP and Student Works

Nationally, heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of disability, hospitalizations, and death among veterans. Health care providers continue to struggle to maximize the quality of life and functional status of their patients. A significant amount of research is available on the topic of HF clinics; however, the unique patient population and staffing issues at this facility have made prior attempts to implement national recommendations unsuccessful. A nurse practitioner (NP)-led HF clinic was created in 2009 without any formal planning, treatment criteria, or outcome measures. Intuitively, the clinic seemed to be decreasing hospitalizations and improving symptom management. However, no data …

Effects Of Haptic And 3d Audio Feedback On Pilot Performance And Workload For Quadrotor Uavs In Indoor Environments, Robert Mark Philbrick Sep 2012

Effects Of Haptic And 3d Audio Feedback On Pilot Performance And Workload For Quadrotor Uavs In Indoor Environments, Robert Mark Philbrick

Theses and Dissertations

Indoor flight of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has many applications in environments in which it is undesirable or dangerous for humans to be, such as military reconnaissance or searching for trapped victims in a collapsed building. However, limited visual feedback makes it difficult to pilot UAVs in cluttered and enclosed spaces. Haptic feedback combined with visual feedback has shown to reduce the number of collisions of UAVs in indoor environments; however, it has increased the mental workload of the operator. This thesis investigates the potential of combining novel haptic and 3D audio feedback to provide additional information to operators of …

N-Terminal Domain Of Vacuolar Snare Vam7p Promotes Trans-Snare Complex Assembly, Hao Xu, William T. Wickner Sep 2012

N-Terminal Domain Of Vacuolar Snare Vam7p Promotes Trans-Snare Complex Assembly, Hao Xu, William T. Wickner

Dartmouth Scholarship

SNARE-dependent membrane fusion in eukaryotic cells requires that the heptad-repeat SNARE domains from R- and Q-SNAREs, anchored to apposed membranes, assemble into four-helix coiled-coil bundles. In addition to their SNARE and transmembrane domains, most SNAREs have N-terminal domains (N-domains), although their functions are unclear. The N-domain of the yeast vacuolar Qc-SNARE Vam7p is a binding partner for the homotypic fusion and vacuole protein sorting complex (a master regulator of vacuole fusion) and has Phox homology, providing a phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI3P)-specific membrane anchor. We now report that this Vam7p N-domain has yet another role, one that does not depend on its …

The Differential Effects Of Maternal Age, Race/Ethnicity And Insurance On Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Admission Rates., Beatriz E De Jongh, Robert Locke, David A Paul, Matthew Hoffman

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Maternal race/ethnicity, age, and socioeconomic status (SES) are important factors determining birth outcome. Previous studies have demonstrated that, teenagers, and mothers with advanced maternal age (AMA), and Black/Non-Hispanic race/ethnicity can independently increase the risk for a poor pregnancy outcome. Similarly, public insurance has been associated with suboptimal health outcomes. The interaction and impact on the risk of a pregnancy resulting in a NICU admission has not been studied. Our aim was, to analyze the simultaneous interactions of teen/advanced maternal age (AMA), race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status on the odds of NICU admission.

METHODS: The Consortium of Safe Labor Database (subset …

Primordial Black Hole Evaporation And Spontaneous Dimensional Reduction, Jonas R. Mureika Sep 2012

Primordial Black Hole Evaporation And Spontaneous Dimensional Reduction, Jonas R. Mureika

Physics Faculty Works

Several different approaches to quantum gravity suggest the effective dimension of spacetime reduces from four to two near the Planck scale. In light of such evidence, this Letter re-examines the thermodynamics of primordial black holes (PBHs) in specific lower-dimensional gravitational models. Unlike in four dimensions, (1 + 1)-D black holes radiate with power P ∼ M2BH, while it is known no (2+1)-D (BTZ) black holes can exist in a non-anti-de Sitter universe. This has important relevance to the PBH population size and distribution, and consequently on cosmological evolution scenarios. The number of PBHs that have evaporated to …
