Gibbons (Hylobatidae) shared a common ancestor with the other hominoids only 15-18 million years ago. Nevertheless, gibbons show very distinctive features that include heavily rearranged chromosomes. Previous observations indicate that this phenomenon may be linked to the attenuated epigenetic repression of transposable elements (TEs) in gibbon species. Here we describe the massive expansion of a repeat in almost all the centromeres of the eastern hoolock gibbon (Hoolock leuconedys). We discovered that this repeat is a new composite TE originating from the combination of portions of three other elements (L1ME5, AluSz6, and SVA-A) and thus named it LAVA. We determined that …

The horn fly, Haematobia irritans, is one of the most economically important pests of cattle. Insecticides have been a major element of horn fly management programs. Growing concerns with insecticide resistance, insecticide residues on farm products, and non-availability of new generation insecticides, are serious issues for the livestock industry. Alternative horn fly control methods offer the promise to decrease the use of insecticides and reduce the amount of insecticide residues on livestock products and give an impetus to the organic livestock farming segment. The horn fly, an obligatory blood feeder, requires the help of microflora to supply additional nutrients and …

Gwu Honors Students Participate In Nc Big Sweep, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

One of the oldest rivers in the world recently received a helping hand from Gardner-Webb University honors students as they participated in an annual environmental clean up event. Over 60 students, faculty members, and volunteers took part in the annual New River clean up day, held Sept. 8 in Ashe County, N.C. The initiative is coordinated by North Carolina Big Sweep, an organization whose purpose is to rid the environment of litter by promoting environmental education and organizing annual statewide cleanup efforts of waterways and other areas.

Writing To Learn: Benefits And Limitations, Sara Winstead Fry, Amanda Villagomez Sep 2012

Writing To Learn: Benefits And Limitations, Sara Winstead Fry, Amanda Villagomez

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Writing to learn (WTL) is the act of making a subject or topic clear to oneself by reasoning through it in writing; it is a pedagogical approach that uses writing to facilitate learning (Zinsser 1988). Some researchers have reported favorable results associated with the approach (Balgopal and Wallace 2009; Bullock 2006; Hand, Hand, Gunel, and Ulu 2009). However, others have indicated that studies supporting WTL pedagogy tend to lack comparison groups, pre/posttest data, or the rich description that contributes to a rigorous qualitative study (Hübner, Nückles, and Renkl 2010; Kieft, Rijlaarsdam, and van den Bergh 2006; Klein 1999). Thus, existing …

Weight Gain, Metabolic Syndrome, And Breast Cancer Recurrence: Are Dietary Recommendations Supported By The Data?, Colin E Champ, Jeff S Volek, Joshua Siglin, Lianjin Jin, Nicole L Simone

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Metabolic syndrome, which can include weight gain and central obesity, elevated serum insulin and glucose, and insulin resistance, has been strongly associated with breast cancer recurrence and worse outcomes after treatment. Epidemiologic and prospective data do not show conclusive evidence as to which dietary factors may be responsible for these results. Current strategies employ low-fat diets which emphasize supplementing calories with increased intake of fruit, grain, and vegetable carbohydrate sources. Although results thus far have been inconclusive, recent randomized trials employing markedly different dietary strategies in noncancer patients may hold the key to reducing multiple risk factors in metabolic syndrome …

Compact Slit-Based Couplers For Metal-Dielectric-Metal Plasmonic Waveguides, Yin Huang, Changjun Min, Georgios Veronis Sep 2012

Compact Slit-Based Couplers For Metal-Dielectric-Metal Plasmonic Waveguides, Yin Huang, Changjun Min, Georgios Veronis

Faculty Publications

We introduce compact wavelength-scale slit-based structures for coupling free space light into metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) subwave-length plasmonic waveguides. We first show that for a single slit structure the coupling efficiency is limited by a trade-off between the light power coupled into the slit, and the transmission of the slit-MDM waveguide junction. We next consider a two-section slit structure, and show that for such a structure the upper slit section enhances the coupling of the incident light into the lower slit section. The optimized two-section slit structure results in ∼ 2.3 times enhancement of the coupling into the MDM plasmonic waveguide compared …

An Exploratory Investigation Of Public School Teachers' Perceptions Of Bullying, Devon Punchello Sep 2012

An Exploratory Investigation Of Public School Teachers' Perceptions Of Bullying, Devon Punchello

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to (1) examine teachers' attitudes and perceptions regarding harassment, intimidation, and bullying, (HIB) behaviors displayed by public school students, (2) determine changes in teachers attitudes and perceptions regarding HIB as a result of specific training and, (3) identify the subsequent impact on their views and opinions of HIB. A survey was distributed to certified teachers to collect data. Both regular and special education teachers' perceptions regarding HIB before and after the training took place was measured. The results indicated that most teachers felt that the training was effective in creating awareness of what determines …
