Accuracy Of Self-Reported Sun Exposure And Sun Protection Behavior, Joel J. Hillhouse, Robert Turrisi, James Jaccard, June K. Robinson Oct 2012

Accuracy Of Self-Reported Sun Exposure And Sun Protection Behavior, Joel J. Hillhouse, Robert Turrisi, James Jaccard, June K. Robinson

ETSU Faculty Works

The objective of this study was to compare the accuracy of self-reported skin cancer risk outcome measures proposed as standards by prevention experts to aggregated estimates of behavior from weekly diaries. Weekly electronic diaries of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) behaviors, initially validated by comparison with daily electronic diaries, were used to assess the accuracy of commonly used end-of-summer self-reported measures among 250 adults. Results revealed low biases, and good correspondence between simple open-ended self-reported estimates of days outside, hours outside, sunbathing days and hours, and days outside when not protected by either sunscreen, long-sleeved shirts, hats, or shade. Rating scale measures …

A Rare Cause Of Cardiac Tamponade: Hypereosinophilic Syndrome, Kwok-Leung Wu, Kin-Lam Tsui, Ka-Lai Lee, Sung-Yu Liu

Journal of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology

We describe a male adult patient who presented with chest discomfort and shortness of breath. A diagnosis of cardiac tamponade was made by transthoracic echocardiogram. Urgent pericardiocentesis was performed and analysis of pericardial fluid showed presence of eosinophil. Complete blood picture showed peripheral eosinphilia as well. Subsequent work up for eosinophilia showed ova of Clonorchis sinesis from the stool thus a course of praziquantel was given. Transient clinical improvement and lowering of eosinophil count were observed but two weeks later he developed acute coronary syndrome. Urgent coronary angiogram showed coronary vasospasm. Endomyocardial biopsy was performed afterwards which showed marked eosinophilic …

Planning For Sea Level Rise In Portland, Maine Using Robust Decision Making As A Guide, Sadie Lloyd Oct 2012

Planning For Sea Level Rise In Portland, Maine Using Robust Decision Making As A Guide, Sadie Lloyd

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

This paper evaluates the potential for Robust Decision Making (RDM) to guide communities preparing for the impacts of climate change, using sea level rise planning in Portland, Maine as a case study. RDM is a problem solving process that considers multiple outcomes and an uncertain future, and focuses on decisions that provide benefits regardless of which future scenarios develop, allowing for the adjustment of decisions over time to accommodate changes in the future. The flexibility of RDM makes it an appropriate model for decision makers and stakeholders unsure how to address impacts of climate change, an issue complicated by numerous …

Unmanned Signatures, Brian Macaskill Oct 2012

Unmanned Signatures, Brian Macaskill

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

UNMANNED SIGNATURES? In addition to its more common significations, “unmanned” is used also in the ‘sport’ of falconry, where it means “not broken in”; the term will in falconry be applied to a hawk or kestrel not (yet?) broken into obedience. “Unwomanned” is similarly linked to deviation from control and controlled norms, but is more likely to appear as a reflexive verb (“to unwoman [herself]”) than as an adjective, and is more likely to be tightly tied in gendered fashion to ‘degeneracy.’ As phrase, title and incipit, “Unmanned Signatures” is in all sorts of ways an oddly descended, perhaps even …

Returning Counselor Education Doctoral Students: Issues Of Retention, Attrition, And Perceived Experiences, David Burkholder Oct 2012

Returning Counselor Education Doctoral Students: Issues Of Retention, Attrition, And Perceived Experiences, David Burkholder

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

A phenomenological research design was utilized to illuminate the experiences of counselor education doctoral students who had voluntarily departed from study and successfully returned. No studies exist in the counselor education literature examining this phenomenon. Themes derived from the data suggest a common experience across participants, including the salient nature of leaving and returning to study, the importance of faculty-student interactions, and that departure is informed by personal factors and academic culture. The findings have implications for student retention and attrition, as well as counseling departments, counseling faculty, and counselor education doctoral students.

Increasing Academic Achievement And College-Going Rates For Latina/O English Language Learners: A Survey Of School Counselor Interventions, Amy Cook, Rachelle Pérusse, Eliana D. Rojas

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This study was conducted to identify the extent to which school counselors use various intervention strategies to promote college attendance for Latina/o English Language Learners (ELLs). Specifically, school counselors across the Northeast (n = 198) were asked to identify activities they implement on behalf of Latina/o ELLs to increase college-going rates. The results suggested the importance of the following: collaborating with multiple school and community stakeholders, addressing the inadequacy of resources through advocacy and leadership, and keeping track of dropout, graduation, and college-acceptance data for Latina/o ELLs to ensure equitable access to educational opportunities.

Turning Counseling Students Into Researchers: Enhancing Quantitative Research Courses With An Experiential Learning Activity, Mark C. Rehfuss, Dixie D. Meyer

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Research methods and application are crucial aspects of most counseling practitioners and scholars’ lives, yet practical experience with development and implementation of research projects is usually limited to doctoral level dissertations. This article describes an experiential research project that has been integrated into counseling research methods courses at both the master’s level and the doctoral level. In this mentored research activity, students move through the entire research process in one semester. They begin with a notion and finish with a submission for publication. Based on student responses, implementing this process in a research methodology course is recommended.

Scavenger Receptor Class A Plays A Central Role In Mediating Mortality And The Development Of The Pro-Inflammatory Phenotype In Polymicrobial Sepsis, Tammy R. Ozment, Tuanzhu Ha, Kevin F. Breuel, Tiffany R. Ford, Donald A. Ferguson, John Kalbfleisch, John B. Schweitzer, Jim L. Kelley, Chuanfu Li, David L. Williams

ETSU Faculty Works

Sepsis is a frequent complication in critical illness. The mechanisms that are involved in initiation and propagation of the disease are not well understood. Scavenger receptor A (SRA) is a membrane receptor that binds multiple polyanions such as oxidized LDL and endotoxin. Recent studies suggest that SRA acts as a pattern recognition receptor in the innate immune response. The goal of the present study was to determine the role of SRA in polymicrobial sepsis. SRA deficient (SRA-/-) and C57BL/6JB/6J (WT) male mice were subjected to cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) to induce polymicrobial sepsis. NFκB activity, myeloperoxidase activity, and co-association …

Statistical Measures For Workload Capacity Analysis, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend Oct 2012

Statistical Measures For Workload Capacity Analysis, Joseph W. Houpt, James T. Townsend

Psychology Faculty Publications

A critical component of how we understand a mental process is given by measuring the effect of varying the workload. The capacity coefficient (Townsend and Nozawa, 1995 and Townsend and Wenger, 2004) is a measure on response times for quantifying changes in performance due to workload. Despite its precise mathematical foundation, until now rigorous statistical tests have been lacking. In this paper, we demonstrate statistical properties of the components of the capacity measure and propose a significance test for comparing the capacity coefficient to a baseline measure or two capacity coefficients to each other.

Compelling Orthodoxy: Myth And Mystique In The Marketing Of Legal Education, Kenneth Lasson Oct 2012

Compelling Orthodoxy: Myth And Mystique In The Marketing Of Legal Education, Kenneth Lasson

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “In many ways, the story of modern legal education reads like a grim fairy tale, whose moral dénouement is no less compelling, and perhaps more consequential, than its fabulist forbearers. In this regard the marketing of legal education may aptly be illustrated by fable, such as that of The Trees and the Bramble Bush, which concerns the folly of electing a king. When some beautiful trees decide to look for a leader, they offer the throne to the olive, the fig and the vine; each in turn refuses, preferring to keep to its own fruitful role. The bramble steps …

Medical Nutrition Therapy Provided To Adult Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Patients, Mary G. Habschmidt, Cheryl A. Bacon, Mary B. Gregoire, Heather E. Rasmussen

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

This study explored the current medical nutrition therapy (MNT) provided to adult patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and examined the current and desired role of registered dietitians (RDs) in providing MNT. A total of 60 RDs (57% response rate) responded to an electronic questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and χ2 analyses (SPSS, version 18) were used. Results revealed the primary form of diet was oral, and for patients on nutrition support, parenteral nutrition (PN) was used more frequently (16%–31%) than enteral nutrition (EN) (5%–9%; P ≤ .05). Nutrition support decisions were based on patients’ individualized needs rather than established …

A Perspective On Livestock–Wolf Interactions On Western Rangelands, Stewart W. Breck, Patrick Clark, Larry Howery, Douglas Johnson, Bryan Kluever, Samuel Smallidge, Andres Cibils Oct 2012

A Perspective On Livestock–Wolf Interactions On Western Rangelands, Stewart W. Breck, Patrick Clark, Larry Howery, Douglas Johnson, Bryan Kluever, Samuel Smallidge, Andres Cibils

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The reintroduction of wolves into their historical ranges in the North American Rocky Mountains and areas of the southwestern United States is possibly one of the most ambitious ecosystem restoration efforts of the recent past. This initiative has been controversial and has stimulated considerable debate among concerned stakeholders about the feasibility of harmonizing multiple land-use demands when preservation of a large predator becomes a central management goal. In many areas, ranching has taken center stage of this debate as ranchers and land managers seek to develop sustainable ways to manage livestock on landscapes with wolves.

The challenges associated with wolf …

Snapshot Of Non-Inclusive Growth: Evidence From Philippine Employment Trends In 2001-2009, Ronald U. Mendoza, Padmini Mahurkar Oct 2012

Snapshot Of Non-Inclusive Growth: Evidence From Philippine Employment Trends In 2001-2009, Ronald U. Mendoza, Padmini Mahurkar

Ateneo School of Government Publications

This article briefly examines the Philippines’ pattern of job creation during the period 2001-2009 in order to help explain why growth during this period failed to translate into poverty reduction. An analysis of disaggregated employment and sectoral output data provides a much more nuanced picture of the types and sectors of jobs created during the last decade. The empirical evidence suggests that employment creation was inadequate, and skewed in favor of high skilled workers even across industries. Based on these findings, promoting inclusive growth in the Philippines requires a robust job creation strategy in order to meet the growing labor …

Compliance With Surgical Care Improvement Project Blood Glucose--A Marker For Euglycemia, But Does It Put Our Patients At Risk?, Isaac R Whitman, Maura Murphy, Marta M Gilson, Amy Campfield, Michel Haddad, Elizabeth Moxey, Glenn J R Whitman

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

To improve outcomes in open heart surgery (OHS) patients, the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) requires 6 am postoperative day (POD) 1 and 2 blood glucose (BG) to be ≤200mg/dL. This study examined risk factors for SCIP noncompliance when using an insulin infusion protocol (IIP) and evaluated this SCIP metric as a surrogate for glycemic control. The authors divided 99 consecutive OHS patients, all subjected to 1 uniform IIP, into 2 groups: Group 1-SCIP compliant (n=79) and Group 2-SCIP noncompliant (n=20). They determined mean BG for the first 48 postoperative hours, percent of total time with hyperglycemia (% time BG …

"Rogue" Athlete Endorsers: Using Social Identity Theory To Assess Brand Fit, Jim Pokrywczynski, David L. Brinker Jr. Oct 2012

"Rogue" Athlete Endorsers: Using Social Identity Theory To Assess Brand Fit, Jim Pokrywczynski, David L. Brinker Jr.

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Athlete endorsement deals typically assume that the brand will benefit from an association with the celebrity athlete's public persona. When athletes find themselves in trouble with the law, spouses or frustrated fans, brands like Nike, Reebok, Buick, Wrangler and others must ask, 'Can these "rogue" sports celebrity endorsers resurrect their image and their endorsement power? Are there certain "rebellious" products that may be better suited for endorsement from such rogue celebrities? These are the key questions addressed in this research. Survey results asking respondents to assess real athlete endorsers with either a 'rebel' or benign brand show that matching rebel …

Use Of Barriers In Rural Open Road Conditions—A Synthesis Study, Erdong Chen, Jennifer Brown, Andrew Tarko Oct 2012

Use Of Barriers In Rural Open Road Conditions—A Synthesis Study, Erdong Chen, Jennifer Brown, Andrew Tarko

JTRP Technical Reports

The use of wide medians and clear zones that do not require median and roadside barriers is the current design practice for new and reconstructed rural highway facilities. Constructing or reconstructing roads with full-width medians and clear zones is much more expensive today compared to when the design standards were developed. Considerable costs can be accrued in additional overhead bridge length, earthwork and ROW in new construction projects, and widening of existing right–of-way and bridge structures in reconstruction projects.

This synthesis study focuses on the use of median barriers and roadside barriers and it identifies: (a) the current design practice …

Integrated Block Sharing: A Win–Win Strategy For Hospitals And Surgeons, Robert Watson Day, Robert Garfinkel, Steven M. Thompson Oct 2012

Integrated Block Sharing: A Win–Win Strategy For Hospitals And Surgeons, Robert Watson Day, Robert Garfinkel, Steven M. Thompson

Management Faculty Publications

We consider the problem of balancing two competing objectives in the pursuit of efficient management of operating rooms in a hospital: providing surgeons with predictable, reliable access to the operating room and maintaining high utilization of capacity. The common solution to the first problem (in practice) is to grant exclusive “block time,” in which a portion of the week in an operating room is designated to a particular surgeon, barring other surgeons from using this room/time. As a major improvement over this existing approach, we model the possibility of “shared” block time, which need only satisfy capacity constraints in expectation. …
