The Strategic Implications Of China's Rare Earths Policy, Shane Bilsborough Oct 2012

The Strategic Implications Of China's Rare Earths Policy, Shane Bilsborough

Journal of Strategic Security

Drawing on literature in China studies, strategic theory, and expert interviews, this article analyzes the possibility of "rare earths" being leveraged by the People's Republic of China (PRC) in a crisis. The evidence suggests China's position in the rare earths market could constitute a significant security liability for the United States. It also seems that even if coercion fails to materialize, China's rare earths policies have the potential to intensify security dilemmas in Sino-American relations.

“What Need Is There Of Words?” The Rhetoric Of Lű'S Annals (Lűshi Chunqiu), Mary M. Garrett Oct 2012

“What Need Is There Of Words?” The Rhetoric Of Lű'S Annals (Lűshi Chunqiu), Mary M. Garrett

Communication Faculty Research Publications

This essay introduces Lű's Annals (Lűshi chunqiu), a classical Chinese text with a wealth of material on rhetoric. Not only does the text evaluate numerous examples of persuasion and sophistry, it also lays out a system of rhetorical precepts grounded in a distinctive ontology, that of correlative cosmology. After outlining the cosmology, epistemology, and theory of language of Lű's Annals, I trace how these shape its rhetorical theory and practices. I then consider how the text itself works as a persuasive artifact in the light of its own strictures. The essay closes with some reflections on why this valuable resource …

Increasing Responsiveness Through The Firm-Lsp Relationship Structure: A Behavioral Perspective, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb Oct 2012

Increasing Responsiveness Through The Firm-Lsp Relationship Structure: A Behavioral Perspective, David M. Gligor, Mary C. Holcomb

Journal of Transportation Management

This study investigates the behavioral aspects of the firm-logistics service provider (LSP) relationship in order to better understand the avenues through which LSP responsiveness to changing customer needs can be enhanced. Because the research examining the behavioral aspects of the firm- LSP relationship is sparse, a dyadic qualitative research approach was taken to explore the development of a relationship structure that will facilitate the level of responsiveness that the firm desires. This study revealed that the key to enhancing LSP responsiveness lays in the structure of the firm-LSP relationship. Specifically, it was found that the level of cooperation, coordination, communication, …

Conflicting Perspectives On The Government Mandate For The Use Of Electronic On-Board Recording Devices In Commercial Motor Vehicles: A Case Study, Helen Maclennan Oct 2012

Conflicting Perspectives On The Government Mandate For The Use Of Electronic On-Board Recording Devices In Commercial Motor Vehicles: A Case Study, Helen Maclennan

Journal of Transportation Management

In July of 2012, the President signed into law the bill, “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century” or MAP21, also known as the Surface Transportation Act. The Act instructs the Secretary of Transportation to promulgate regulations requiring the use of electronic on-board recording devices (EOBRs) to verify hours of service compliance by commercial motor vehicle drivers. The mandate has drawn opposition from many drivers and trade organizations, while simultaneously drawing support from government, union organizations and other trade organizations. Consequently, it appears that the EOBR mandate will continue to be a source of potential conflict for management and …

Dreaming In Analog: The Marriage Of Vintage Photographic Process And The Contemporary World., Lynn M. Lee Oct 2012

Dreaming In Analog: The Marriage Of Vintage Photographic Process And The Contemporary World., Lynn M. Lee

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

"Dreaming in Analog: the marriage of vintage photographic process and the contemporary world" discusses a choice in the photographic arts. That choice is, by many contemporary artists, to take a step back. Slow down. Revisit analog photography as it was originally used. However, because of the fast-paced world in which we live, even these slow, lovely processes are able to be created, completed and shared globally via digital technology and the Internet.

Female Flesh And Medieval Practice In The Later Middle Ages, Megan E. Marzec Oct 2012

Female Flesh And Medieval Practice In The Later Middle Ages, Megan E. Marzec

Mid-America College Art Association Conference 2012 Digital Publications

My work explores the importance and presence of the female body in medieval religious practice as exemplified in medieval art, religious texts and hagiographies. My research shows that while the reasoning behind female imagery and imagery of the nude is disputed, the prevalence of mandorla-like images, images of the female nude, and images displaying the femininity of Christ suggest the meaningfulness to the medieval viewer. I discuss extensively Julia Kristeva’s writing on the woman as abject and the artistic experience as an element of religiosity. For this research I analyzed works by various artists including Robert Campin, Jan Gossaert and …

Roles And Responsibilities Of Nonprofit Boards: The Peace Case, Patrick Kennelly Oct 2012

Roles And Responsibilities Of Nonprofit Boards: The Peace Case, Patrick Kennelly

Professional Projects

This exploratory study identifies the levels of importance and fulfillment of board roles and responsibilities by nonprofit peacemaking organization board members and executive directors. It suggests a three-component framework for understanding board governance. By employing purposive non-probability sampling, this study used board governance instruments, developed by Inglis, Alexander, and Weaver’s (1999), to identify a three-component framework: strategic activities, resource planning, and evaluations for nonprofit organizations whose mission is peacemaking. It examines the relevance of the framework suggested by Inglis, Alexander, and Weaver’s (1999) for nonprofit peacemaking organizations. The results of this study can be used by nonprofit peacemaking organizations to …

English Education 2.0: An Analysis Of Websites That Contain Videos Of English Teaching, Michael Sherry, Robert Tremmel Oct 2012

English Education 2.0: An Analysis Of Websites That Contain Videos Of English Teaching, Michael Sherry, Robert Tremmel

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

In this article, we address how websites intended for ELA teachers encourage user participation and what kinds of English education these sites promote or exclude. We selected sites based on assumptions drawn from interactional sociolinguistics as well as additional criteria that developed during our search. Our analysis focuseson the George Lucas Foundation’s Edutopia.org as a central example, as well as five other sites with various similar features. Together, these sites promote a progressive, situated, project-based vision of English teaching, and they may serve as both venues and models for how English teacher educators who share that vision can reach a …

American Men’S And Women’S Beliefs About Gender Discrimination: For Men, It’S Not Quite A Zerosum Game, Jennifer K. Bosson, Joseph A. Vandello, Kenneth S. Michniewicz, Joshua G. Lenes Oct 2012

American Men’S And Women’S Beliefs About Gender Discrimination: For Men, It’S Not Quite A Zerosum Game, Jennifer K. Bosson, Joseph A. Vandello, Kenneth S. Michniewicz, Joshua G. Lenes

Psychology Faculty Publications

We surveyed Americans regarding their beliefs about gender discrimination over the past several decades. Men and women agreed that women faced much more discrimination than men in the past, and they agreed that the discrimination gap between men and women has narrowed in recent years. However, men perceived the gap as narrower than women did at all time periods, and reported that there is little difference today in the amount of gender discrimination women and men face. Political ideology moderated these beliefs such that conservative men were most likely to report that anti-Man bias now equals or exceeds anti-Woman bias. …
