B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) is frequently associated with mutations or chromosomal translocations of genes encoding transcription factors. Conditional deletion of genes encoding the E26-transformation-specific transcription factors, PU.1 and Spi-B, in B cells (ΔPB mice) leads to B-ALL in mice at 100% incidence rate and with a median survival of 21 wk. We hypothesized that PU.1 and Spi-B may redundantly activate transcription of genes encoding tumor suppressors in the B cell lineage. Characterization of aging ΔPB mice showed that leukemia cells expressing IL-7R were found in enlarged thymuses. IL-7R-expressing B-ALL cells grew in culture in response to IL-7 and …

Why Multidisciplinary Clinics Should Be The Standard For Treating Chronic Kidney Disease, Guido Filler, Steven E. Lipshultz
Why Multidisciplinary Clinics Should Be The Standard For Treating Chronic Kidney Disease, Guido Filler, Steven E. Lipshultz
Paediatrics Publications
In adults, strong evidence indicates that slowing progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) requires an integrated, multidisciplinary approach. In children, however, this approach has not been studied. This editorial commentary to the study by Ajarmeh et al in this volume of Pediatric Nephrology highlights how a dedicated, multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dieticians, social workders and clinic data managers slowed the progression of CKD in children to a remarkable degree. We discuss the strengths and limitations of the study and its cost implications, as well as the issue of determining the optional complement of physicians and allied health care …

Paediatrics Publications
This qualitative study rooted in community-based participatory research principles utilized semi-structured interviews with 2 focus groups (n = 9) with female healthcare volunteers (FCVs) and 3 male key informants who were community leaders (MCLs). The study aimed to examine how a rural Honduran community defines and responds to intimate partner violence (IPV) in order to lay the foundation for future interventions. Based on grounded theory, the authors assessed for common themes across transcripts. Authors found that a number of participants denied the existence of IPV. Perspectives on the causes and definitions of IPV varied between FCVs and MCLs. All participants …

Background. School policies limiting the availability of sweetened beverages are often considered to be effective interventions for improving children's diet and weight-related health. This study was designed to examine the effectiveness of the Rhode Island Healthier Beverage Policy in reducing consumption of unhealthy beverages and in producing changes in children's weight status. Method. Students in 2 public middle schools in Rhode Island completed self-reported measures of dietary intake and were measured for height and weight prior to and 1 year following the implementation of a state-mandated healthier beverage policy. An inventory of beverages available in vending machines after the beverage …

Umbilical Cord Blood-Derived Aldehyde Dehydrogenase-Expressing Progenitor Cells Promote Recovery From Acute Ischemic Injury, David M. Putman, Kevin Y. Liu, Heather C. Broughton, Gillian I. Bell, David A. Hess
Paediatrics Publications
Umbilical cord blood (UCB) represents a readily available source of hematopoietic and endothelial precursors at early ontogeny. Understanding the proangiogenic functions of these somatic progenitor subtypes after transplantation is integral to the development of improved cell-based therapies to treat ischemic diseases. We used fluorescence-activated cell sorting to purify a rare (<0.5%) population of UCB cells with high aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDHhi) activity, a conserved stem/progenitor cell function. ALDHhicells were depleted of mature monocytes and T- and B-lymphocytes and were enriched for early myeloid (CD33) and stem cell-associated (CD34, CD133, and CD117) phenotypes. Although these cells were primarily hematopoietic in origin, UCB ALDHhi cells demonstrated a proangiogenic transcription profile and were highly enriched for both multipotent myeloid and endothelial colony-forming cells in vitro. Coculture of ALDHhi cells in hanging transwells promoted the survival of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) under growth factor-free and serum-free conditions. On growth factor depleted matrigel, ALDHhicells significantly increased tube-like cord formation by HUVEC. After induction of acute unilateral hind limb ischemia by femoral artery ligation, transplantation of ALDHhi cells significantly enhanced the recovery of perfusion in ischemic limbs. Despite transient engraftment in the ischemic hind limb, early recruitment of ALDHhi cells into ischemic muscle tissue correlated with increased murine von Willebrand factor blood vessel and CD31+ capillary densities. Thus, UCB ALDHhi cells represent a readily available population of proangiogenic progenitors that promote vascular regeneration. This work provides preclinical justification for the development of therapeutic strategies to treat ischemic diseases using UCB-derived ALDH hi mixed progenitor cells. © AlphaMed Press.
The Morning After A General Election: The Vice-Regal Perspective, Peter Neary
The Morning After A General Election: The Vice-Regal Perspective, Peter Neary
History Publications
Everywhere in Canada, election night now produces a television extravaganza, with the commentariat out in full force. The next day newspapers chime in with their reporting, as the country wakes up to further analysis of what has happened and what the future might bring. From the vice-regal perspective, however, the path to be followed after every election is always clear and always the same: the conventions of responsible government must be respected and politics eschewed. The vice-regal representative is the protector of the Constitution and not a political actor: the job is to follow convention, stay away from party strife, …

With the continuing growth of mobile phones outpacing that of desktops and laptops, mobile phones are the new personal computer. These devices started becoming increasingly sophisticated and extremely powerful. In addition to making phone calls it have the capabilities to perform variety functions, one of the most important functions using it as a classroom tool. However, mobile phone applications must be designed and developed with respect to different technologies skills, learning capabilities and language proficiency in order to be accepted by wide audiences (e.g., students, instructors). However, there is much work that has been done to measure the quality of …

Elastic Deformations Of The Rotary Double Motor Of Single F(O)F(1)-Atp Synthases Detected In Real Time By Förster Resonance Energy Transfer., Stefan Ernst, Monika G Düser, Nawid Zarrabi, Stanley D Dunn, Michael Börsch
Biochemistry Publications
Elastic conformational changes of the protein backbone are essential for catalytic activities of enzymes. To follow relative movements within the protein, Förster-type resonance energy transfer (FRET) between two specifically attached fluorophores can be applied. FRET provides a precise ruler between 3 and 8nm with subnanometer resolution. Corresponding submillisecond time resolution is sufficient to identify conformational changes in FRET time trajectories. Analyzing single enzymes circumvents the need for synchronization of various conformations. F(O)F(1)-ATP synthase is a rotary double motor which catalyzes the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). A proton-driven 10-stepped rotary F(O) motor in the Escherichia coli enzyme is connected to …

Current research suggests a role for biomedical knowledge in learning and retaining concepts related to medical diagnosis. However, learning may be influenced by other, non-biomedical knowledge. We explored this idea using an experimental design and examined the effects of causal knowledge on the learning, retention, and interpretation of medical information. Participants studied a handout about several respiratory disorders and how to interpret respiratory exam findings. The control group received the information in standard "textbook" format and the experimental group was presented with the same information as well as a causal explanation about how sound travels through lungs in both the …

Vocational Rehabilitation Service Delivery Using Telecommunication, Rebecca Goe, Catherine Ipsen, University Of Montana Rural Institute
Employment
Telecommunication offers a low cost solution to increasing client and counselor contact during the vocational rehabilitation (VR) process, particularly for clients at a distance from the VR office. Despite the advantage telecommunication provides, however, counselors report using email with fewer rural as compared to urban clients (Ipsen, Rigles, Arnold, & Seekins, 2012). In part, this may relate to counselor perceptions that rural clients have less Internet access than their urban counterparts (Ipsen et al., 2012). This disparity may be diminishing, however. Government incentives and public access in libraries and community centers are improving telecommunication infrastructure across the country, especially in …

The Effects Of Writing Pedagogy Education On Graduate Teaching Assistants’ Approaches To Teaching Composition, E. Shelley Reid, Heidi Estrem, Marcia Belcheir
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors report the initial results from a three-year, two-site, multimodal study of the relationship between formal pedagogy education and teaching practices for graduate teaching assistants (TAs) in first-year writing. Quantitative and qualitative analysis of data from 88 multiple-choice and short-answer surveys and 41 semi-structured interviews demonstrates uneven integration of key composition pedagogy principles into TAs’ views of teaching writing; additional analysis reveals very few differences between first- and beyond-first-year TAs or between TAs at the two sites. The authors recommend that on a national level, TA writing pedagogy education be routinely and robustly extended into at least the second …

The direct incorporation of citizens into complex policymaking processes is the most significant innovation of the "third wave" of democratization in the developing world. Participatory governance (PG) institutions are part of a new institutional architecture that increases the connections among citizens and government officials. This article draws from a single case of participatory governance to explore how its particular mechanisms work to transform representative democracy. In the cases examine here, PG institutions are grafted onto representative democracy and existing state institutions. These are state-sanctioned venues that require the intense involvement of citizens and government officials, without which the programs would …

Multi-Temporal Analysis Of Crop Biomass Using Selected Environmental Variables And Remote Sensing Derived Indices, Nwakaku M. Ajaere
Multi-Temporal Analysis Of Crop Biomass Using Selected Environmental Variables And Remote Sensing Derived Indices, Nwakaku M. Ajaere
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Measuring biomass in crops is important for yield prediction, nutrient management and analysis of carbon sequestration. Studying crop phenology via biomass can also provide insight into not only the state of the ecosystem but also environmental factors which may affect crop growth. Remote sensing techniques, as an alternative to traditional in-situ sampling methods for biomass assessment, provide potentially more efficient data acquisition and cost-effective procedures. Numerous vegetation indices (VI) have been developed which use spectral reflectance data to measure plant biophysical characteristics. The first objective of this research was to examine the correlation between crop biomass and selected environmental variables …

Dispositional Depression And Hostility Are Associated With Inflammatory Markers Of Cardiovascular Disease In African Americans, Michael Lipscomb
Department of Biology Faculty Publications
Prior research has demonstrated that state depressive symptoms and hostility can modulate inflammatory immune responses and directly contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) onset and development. Previous studies have not considered the contribution of dispositional depressive symptoms to the inflammatory process. They have also largely excluded African Americans, despite their disproportionate risk for CVD. The first aim of the study was to examine the impact of state and dispositional depression and hostility on CVD-associated inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in an African American sample. The second aim was to examine synergistic influences of hostility and state and dispositional …

A Geospatial Modeling Framework For Assessing Biofuels-Related Land-Use And Land-Cover Change, Ruopu Li, Qingfeng (Gene) Guan, James W. Merchant
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
With the increasing biofuel demands in recent years, the cultivated lands for biofuel crops, i.e., corn and soybeans, the major sources of ethanol and biodiesel, have been greatly expanding in the northern Great Plains states of the United States. Simulating the spatio-temporal dynamics of biofuel croplands can provide critical information required for assessing the impacts of land-use change on wildlife conservation and water quality. But, yearly agricultural practices such as crop rotations often complicate the spatially explicit modeling of specific crops’ expansion. Our research focused on developing a geospatial modeling framework that is able to distinguish long-term, regional changes in …
