Comparison Of Union And Non-Union Bids On Ohio School Facilities Commission Construction Projects, Alan Atalah Oct 2012

Comparison Of Union And Non-Union Bids On Ohio School Facilities Commission Construction Projects, Alan Atalah

Construction Management Faculty Publications

In 1997, the Ohio senate passed Senate Bill 102 which established the Ohio School Facilities Commission as a separate agency to oversee the rebuilding projects of the public schools in Ohio. To lower the construction cost, the bill exempted construction contractors from paying prevailing wages on these projects based on the hypothesis that this exemption would save the Ohio tax payer 10.7%. Many other studies concluded that these savings would range from 1.5 to 26%. The purpose of this research was to investigate this hypothesis through the statistical analysis of 8093 bids received for the schools’ construction from the years …

Three-Axis Stabilized Earth Orbiting Spacecraft Simulator, Alan F. Ma, Nikola N. Dominikovic Oct 2012

Three-Axis Stabilized Earth Orbiting Spacecraft Simulator, Alan F. Ma, Nikola N. Dominikovic

Aerospace Engineering

This report details the method and results of the program created for simulating an Earth orbiting spacecraft with control actuators and orbital perturbations. The control actuators modeled are reaction thrusters, reaction/momentum wheels, and control moment gyros (CMG). The perturbations modeled were gravity gradient, electromagnetic torques, solar radiation pressure, gravity gradients, third-body effects, Earth oblateness and atmospheric drag. This simulation allows for satellite control in all 6 degrees of freedom for any Earth orbiting spacecraft. Assumptions include rigid body dynamics, no sensor noise, constant spacecraft cross-sectional area, constant coefficient of drag and reflectivity, ignoring the effects due to the moon, moment …

Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy Oct 2012

Ecosystems Under Sail: Specimen Transport In The Eighteenth-Century French And British Atlantics, Christopher M. Parsons, Kate S. Murphy

History

The ocean was frequently as hostile an environment for plants and animals as it was for humankind in the eighteenth century. Existing methods of preserving the plants, fish, birds, and land animals that provided the raw materials for European science increasingly proved insufficient for the often long voyages that brought them from colonial and indigenous collectors; specimens arrived dead when they were needed alive, rotten and damaged when they were needed whole, and they frequently suffered as they encountered negligent and uninterested sailors, and rats and other shipboard pests that showed too much interest. This paper examines strategies of specimen …

Accretion Properties Of High- And Low-Excitation Young Radio Galaxies, Donghoon Son, Jong-Hak Woo, Sang Chul Kim, Hai Fu, Nozomu Kawakatu, Vardha N. Bennert, Tohru Nagao, Daeseong Park Oct 2012

Accretion Properties Of High- And Low-Excitation Young Radio Galaxies, Donghoon Son, Jong-Hak Woo, Sang Chul Kim, Hai Fu, Nozomu Kawakatu, Vardha N. Bennert, Tohru Nagao, Daeseong Park

Physics

Young radio galaxies (YRGs) provide an ideal laboratory to explore the connection between the accretion disk and radio jet thanks to their recent jet formation. We investigate the relationship between the emission-line properties, the black hole accretion rate, and the radio properties using a sample of 34 low-redshift (z < 0.4) YRGs. We classify YRGs as high-excitation galaxies (HEGs) and low-excitation galaxies (LEGs) based on the flux ratio of high-ionization to low-ionization emission lines. Using the Hα luminosities as a proxy of accretion rate, we find that HEGs in YRGs have ~1 dex higher Eddington ratios than LEGs in YRGs, suggesting that HEGs have a higher mass accretion rate or higher radiative efficiency than LEGs. In agreement with previous studies, we find that the luminosities of emission lines, in particular Hα, are correlated with radio core luminosity, suggesting that accretion and young radio activities are fundamentally connected.
