Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen Oct 2012

Optimization Of Biodiesel Production Plants, Nghi T. Nguyen

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

A conventional biodiesel plant utilizing two distillation columns to purify unreacted reactants and products is considered in this study. Thermodynamic analyses are used to assess the performance of the existing distillation columns, and reduce the costs of operation by appropriate retrofits in a biodiesel production plant. After the retrofits, the overall exergy loss for the two columns has decreased from 2430.87 kW to 1674.12 kW.

A reactive distillation is developed for esterification of lauric acid with methanol using equilibrium and nonequilibrium models. Equilibrium modeling dominated during last few decades due to their straightforward mathematical modeling. In reality, separation depends on …

On An Iterative Method For Basis Pursuit With Application To Echo Cancellation With Sparse Impulse Responses, Pratik Shah, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty Oct 2012

On An Iterative Method For Basis Pursuit With Application To Echo Cancellation With Sparse Impulse Responses, Pratik Shah, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Basis pursuit has been shown to be an effective method of solving inverse problems with a small amount of data when the system to be determined has a sparse representation. Adaptive filters fall under this general category of problems. Here, we use the echo cancellation context to introduce a method of solving the basis pursuit problem with an iterative method based on the proportionate normalized affine projection algorithm (PAPA). Earlier, it has been shown that PAPA can be derived from a basis pursuit perspective. Here we refine the assumptions made in those derivations and show that an iterative form of …

Near-Field 3-D Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Via Compressed Sensing, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper successfully implements compressed sensing (CS) to a near-field wideband 3-D synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging system. SAR data are measured at a low percentage of random-selected positions on a uniform grid of planar aperture in the strip map mode. the near-field 3-D range migration algorithm (RMA) is used in combination with the CS principle to reconstruct the 3-D image via l 1 regularized least-square approach. Experiments were performed with Q-band stepped-frequency monostatic strip map SAR imaging system on a blue foam embedded with eight rubber pads and one copper square chip. the results of the experiments show near-field …

Clean Energy: The Economics Of Why And How, Adele C. Morris Oct 2012

Clean Energy: The Economics Of Why And How, Adele C. Morris

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

One rationale for large public investments in clean energy technology points to concerns that have not been addressed by other policies, most notably greenhouse gas emissions and energy security. Another inspiration for clean energy policy suggests that strategic government investments would increase domestic firms' market share of a growing industry and thus help domestic firms and workers. This lecture examines the economic case for clean energy policy in the United States and addresses the issues state and local governments confront in building a clean energy industry.

Stabillity Ball Sitting Elevates Peak Arm Ergometry Oxygen Consumption And Heart Rate, Charles R.C Marks, Leah Dupuie, Jennifer Patros

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 360-366, 2012. This study compared sitting on a stability ball (B) to sitting on a chair (C) during arm ergometry to determine the impact on peak VO2, peak heart rate (HR), and exercise intensity prescription. Open-circuit spirometer, blood pressure, and HR were monitored during rest and continuous graded exercise test to exhaustion using an arm ergometer. Twenty-seven apparently healthy adults exercised twice, once at B and the other trial C (order randomized), with 60 minutes of rest between trials. ANOVA for repeated measures (a < 0.05) and paired t testing using Holm's-sequential Bonferroni were used …

Decreases In Maximal Oxygen Uptake Among Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Cadets Following Three Months Without Mandatory Physical Training, Gary Liguori, Kassie Krebsbach, John Schuna Jr.

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 354-359, 2012. During the academic year, Army ROTC cadets are required to participate in mandatory physical training; however, during summer months training is not required. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a change in cadet VO2max after the summer when training is not mandatory. Participants completed a graded exercise treadmill test to determine their VO2max in late spring of 2010 and again in early fall of 2010. Results indicated that over a three-month break from mandatory physical training, a significant decrease in VO2max was seen …

Stroboscopic Training Enhances Anticipatory Timing, Trevor Q. Smith, Stephen R. Mitroff Oct 2012

Stroboscopic Training Enhances Anticipatory Timing, Trevor Q. Smith, Stephen R. Mitroff

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 344-353, 2012. The dynamic aspects of sports often place heavy demands on visual processing. As such, an important goal for sports training should be to enhance visual abilities. Recent research has suggested that training in a stroboscopic environment, where visual experiences alternate between visible and obscured, may provide a means of improving attentional and visual abilities. The current study explored whether stroboscopic training could impact anticipatory timing—the ability to predict where a moving stimulus will be at a specific point in time. Anticipatory timing is a critical skill for both sports and non-sports …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 5(4) : 334-343, 2012. Plyometric research in the upper extremity is limited, with the effects of open-chain plyometric exercises being studied most. Kinematic and ground reaction force data concerning closed-chain upper extremity plyometrics has yet to be examined. Twenty-one recreationally active male subjects performed four variations of plyometric push-ups in a counterbalanced order. These included box drop push-ups from 3.8 cm, 7.6 cm, 11.4 cm heights, and clap push-ups. Kinematics of the trunk, dominant extremity and both hands were collected to examine peak flight, elbow flexion at ground contact, elbow displacement, and hand separation. Additionally …

Assessing Eli Broad's Assault On Public School System Leadership. A Response To "The Broad Challenge To Democratic Leadership: The Other Crisis In Education.", Fenwick W. English, Zan Crowder

Democracy & Education

Eli Broad’s approach to reforming urban public education does not recognize his own self-interest in promoting changes within such educational systems, a classic problem of misrecognition. The Broad agenda is an assault on the notion of the mission of public education as a service instead of a for-profit enterprise concerned with making money for the owners and stock holders. This article examines the backgrounds of the graduates of the Broad Superintendents Academy and raises critical issues such as how can Broad claim that graduate preparation in educational administration is unnecessary when at least half of his own graduates already have …

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell Oct 2012

Swimming In Deep Waters. A Response To "A Review Of Teaching As A Moral Practice", Deborah Schussler, Sharon Feiman-Nemser, Mary E. Diez, Peter Murrell

Democracy & Education

The authors respond to a review of their book, Teaching as a Moral Practice: Defining, Developing, and Assessing Dispositions. The authors emphasize a vision of shared commitments for quality teaching whereby teacher-educators instill and nurture the wisdom and virtue that a moral teacher must possess in order to teach in a variety of circumstances where clear-cut answers do not exist. In addition, teacher-educators help teachers discern how, in that context, they should enact particular knowledge, skills, and commitments to reach desired ends. The key to enact this vision of teaching as a shared, moral practice is critical colleagueship.

The rise of electronic publication has irrevocably transformed the ways we share research with colleagues. We are now able to share our research faster and more cheaply than ever before. However, although the electronic dissemination of research allows us to dispense with materials, printing, and distribution costs, the prices of many scholarly journals have skyrocketed. This situation creates barriers between your research and the researchers who need access to your work. Scholarly Communication Librarian, Andrew Wesolek, will explore the response to this crisis in scholarly communication; specifically, Open Access publication models. The presentation will cover the basics of Open Access, …

America’S Favorite Illiquid Investment: An Examination Of The Changing Social Perception Of Homeownership , Jeremiah J. Lee Oct 2012

America’S Favorite Illiquid Investment: An Examination Of The Changing Social Perception Of Homeownership , Jeremiah J. Lee

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

Purchasing a home is traditionally touted as one of the best investments an individual can make, but this advice may be simply too generic to be useful or applied too broadly to be good counsel. Social pressures encouraging homeownership in America have been fostered by decades of government programs. Modern uses of the family home as a financial investment, such as flipping homes or using a home equity line of credit to subsidize a higher standard of living, illustrate a perceptual shift in which many modern homeowners have come to consider the family home principally a tool for financial gain …

Hype And Hostility For Hybrid Companies: A Fourth Sector Case Study, Ryan J. Gaffney Oct 2012

Hype And Hostility For Hybrid Companies: A Fourth Sector Case Study, Ryan J. Gaffney

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

The traditional three-sector ownership model of society grows outmoded. The prevalence of quasi-governmental agencies, public-private partnerships, and government bailouts blurs the line between the public and private sectors. Of concern to this article, however, is the blurring between the private and nonprofit sectors. The cross-pollination is so widespread that a call stands to amend the existing model with an “emerging fourth sector.” The social entrepreneurs attempting to bridge the gap between sectors face limitations from the outset of their venture; legislators did not design traditional legal entities for a “double bottom line” that includes social impact as well as profit. …

Charitable Organizations And Commercial Activity: A New Era - Will The Social Entrepreneurship Movement Force Change?, Jaclyn Cherry Oct 2012

Charitable Organizations And Commercial Activity: A New Era - Will The Social Entrepreneurship Movement Force Change?, Jaclyn Cherry

The Journal of Business, Entrepreneurship & the Law

It is no longer a new trend for charitable organizations to become involved in commercial activities. Thousands of nonprofit organizations have embraced the social entrepreneurial concept and have either created “commercial” type ventures as part of their nonprofits, have created spin-off organizations or subsidiary organizations, or have moved into the new area of hybrid organizations. Because there are no clear rules or guidelines for dealing with this issue, the third sector finds itself with rogue components and a spin-off group of hybrid organizations being loosely termed “social entrepreneurs.” Though these groups have grown in numbers in recent years, they have …
