A Practical Study Of The Problems Of Current Internet Routing Tables, Arnav Ghosh
A Practical Study Of The Problems Of Current Internet Routing Tables, Arnav Ghosh
Theses
The phenomenal growth of the Internet seems to amaze even the creators of this worldwide network. Apart from the constantly changing data protocols and services which the Internet has to adapt to; the sheer volume of users has been one of the biggest challenges which the Internet is coping with. This thesis is directed towards the study of Internet scale routing tables in a lab environment to understand the dynamics of route processing by routers and the effect of increasing number of routing table entries on the overall performance of the network. This study is an effort to simulate an …

Decrease In Central Venous Catheter Placement And Complications Due To Utilization Of Ultrasound-Guided Peripheral Intravenous Catheters, Arthur K Au, Masashi Rotte, Robert Grzybowski, Bon Ku, Jason M. Fields
Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers
Poster presented at: American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) conference.
Introduction: -Up to 40% of ED visits include diagnostic blood tests and 26% result in administration of IV fluids necessitating successful peripheral intravenous (IV) catheter placement.1 -There is a subset of patients with difficult IV access (DIVA) in which traditional cannulation methods are unsuccessful resulting in central venous cannulation (CVC). -CVCs have a 5-15 percent complication rate2 and attributable costs per CVC related infection have been estimated at $34,508-$56,000.3 -Ultrasound-guided peripheral IV catheters (USGPIVs) provide a method of potentially decreasing the need for CVC placement, however due to poor durability …
The Tax Expenditure Budget Is A Zombie Accountant, Steven A. Dean
The Tax Expenditure Budget Is A Zombie Accountant, Steven A. Dean
Faculty Scholarship
Like a student blocking his access to the internet to help him study, governments across the globe rely on commitment devices to generate fiscal discipline. From the collapse of the Congressional Supercommittee in the United States to the near-cataclysmic failure of a mechanism designed to prevent the European Union debt crisis, the evidence suggests that faith in such commitment devices is misplaced. This Article focuses on one such device that stubbornly refuses to stay dead: the tax expenditure budget. Created to guard against abuse by publicizing the costs of tax subsidies then resurrected as a bean counter, the tax expenditure …

Bruce, The Multi-Function Robot, Terence Stewart
Theses
In our daily life. It has becoming really busy, perhaps more than ever. And trying to do thing at personal time is nearly impossible. You would need an extra person to assist doing things you won't have time for. Big issue is about trusting an extra person, we all need something we can easily trust. We could consider using robot that assist with several general chores, which we cannot cover while doing something else. This robot called, "Bruce". Bruce is a simple robot that does the basic idea of helping people with carrying, cleaning and other task people apply to …
Characterization Of Color, Gloss And Mechanical Performance Of 3d Printed Structures, Hrushikesh Godbole
Characterization Of Color, Gloss And Mechanical Performance Of 3d Printed Structures, Hrushikesh Godbole
Theses
The demand for customized products is on a rise. As such, there is a great need for methods to efficiently satisfy this need for customization. Rapid prototyping, also known as 3D printing, is a technology that enables economic production of customized low volume products and enables expedited product development cycles. Given the importance of color as a means to differentiate products generated through 3D printing processes, accurate color reproduction is essential for broad market acceptance. Color reproduction in 2D document printing is itself a complex science; achieving similar results in 3D printing will require significant research. This research work explores …
Truths We Must Tell Ourselves To Manage Climate Change, Robert H. Socolow
Truths We Must Tell Ourselves To Manage Climate Change, Robert H. Socolow
Vanderbilt Law Review
In 1958, Charles David Keeling began measuring the concentration of carbon dioxide (C02) in the atmosphere, at a site 11,000 feet above sea level near the top of Mauna Loa on the "big island" of Hawaii. The time series of monthly averages, the "Keeling Curve," is the iconic figure of climate change (see Figure 1). The curve oscillates and rises. The annual oscillations (whose details are seen in the Figure's inset) are the consequences of the seasonal breathing of the northern-hemisphere forests, which remove C02 from the atmosphere during their growing season and return C02 to the atmosphere as their …
Sustainable Consumption, Energy Policy, And Individual Well-Being, Daniel A. Farber
Sustainable Consumption, Energy Policy, And Individual Well-Being, Daniel A. Farber
Vanderbilt Law Review
The United States is an exceptional place in many ways, not least in its consumption. The United States consumes a disproportionate share of the world's energy and resources, with a correspondingly large environmental footprint. At present, although we have been successful in creating economic wealth, well-being has lagged behind. Could the United States shift to a more sustainable path? Would that require an unacceptable sacrifice of social welfare? This Article argues that a shift really is possible, and that many of the steps to sustainability would actually make people better off even apart from their environmental benefits.
At present, we …
Can We Regulate Our Way To Energy Efficiency? Product Standards As Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs
Can We Regulate Our Way To Energy Efficiency? Product Standards As Climate Policy, Noah M. Sachs
Vanderbilt Law Review
Alternative energy supplies get most of the attention in the climate change debate, but reducing energy demand should be the dominant strategy for cutting global greenhouse gas emissions. Dozens of technical studies have concluded that improving the efficiency of automobiles, furnaces, motors, consumer electronics, lighting, air conditioners, and other energy-using products is the cheapest and fastest way to achieve dramatic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.' In fact, avoiding catastrophic global heating largely depends on how fast energy efficient technology can be deployed over the next few decades.
Energy efficiency can be promoted through multiple policies, such as energy taxes, a …
Hydro Law And The Future Of Hydroelectric Power Generation In The United States, Dan Tarlock
Hydro Law And The Future Of Hydroelectric Power Generation In The United States, Dan Tarlock
Vanderbilt Law Review
Hydroelectric energy ("hydro") is the oldest major source of noncarbon, renewable energy in the United States. For three reasons, increased hydro generation should be a major element of any national climate change and energy-security policy designed to promote the greater use of renewables to help the country transition to the production of sustainable, i.e., noncarbon-based, energy. First, hydro is relatively clean because it does not cause air pollution or substantial greenhouse gas emissions.' Second, hydro is relatively reliable. Third, hydro can help wean the United States from its dependence on imported and often politically unstable hydrocarbon sources of energy, because …
Sickle Cell Pain: A Critical Reappraisal., Samir K. Ballas, Kalpna Gupta, Patricia Adams-Graves
Sickle Cell Pain: A Critical Reappraisal., Samir K. Ballas, Kalpna Gupta, Patricia Adams-Graves
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Sickle cell pain includes 3 types: acute recurrent painful crises, chronic pain syndromes, and neuropathic pain. The acute painful crisis is the hallmark of the disease and the most common cause of hospitalization and treatment in the emergency department. It evolves through 4 phases: prodromal, initial, established, and resolving. Each acute painful episode is associated with inflammation that worsens with recurrent episodes, often culminating in serious complications and organ damage, such as acute chest syndrome, multiorgan failure, and sudden death. Three pathophysiologic events operate in unison during the prodromal phase of the crisis: vaso-occlusion, inflammation, and nociception. Aborting the acute …

Bandemia With Normal White Blood Cell Counts Associated With Infection., Marci Drees, Narrani Kanapathippillai, Marc T Zubrow
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVE: Measuring immature white blood cell forms ("bands") has been considered clinically unnecessary. We performed this study to determine whether elevated band counts, with normal total white blood cells on admission, were associated with infection or in-hospital death.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study including all patients admitted to the Christiana Care Health System 2-hospital, 1100-bed community-based academic health system in 2009 with normal white blood cells (3800-10,800 per mm(3)) on admission who had manual differentials performed. We defined our band groups as normal (≤10% bands and other immature cells), moderate (11%-19%), or high (≥20%). Via chart review, we …

The role of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression is well established, however the regulatory mechanisms modulating this phenomenon remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate that transcription factor glioma-associated oncogene 1 (GLI1) modulates EMT through direct up-regulation of SNAI1 and serves as a downstream effector of the transforming growth factor-b1 (TGFb1) pathway, a well-known regulator of EMT in cancer cells. Overexpression of GLI1 increased proliferation, viability, migration, invasion, and colony formation by HCC cells. Conversely, GLI1 knockdown led to a decrease in all the above-mentioned cancer-associated phenotypes in HCC cells. Further analysis of GLI1 regulated cellular functions showed …
Analysis Of Travel Time Reliability For Freight Corridors Connecting The Pacific Northwest, Miguel A. Figliozzi
Analysis Of Travel Time Reliability For Freight Corridors Connecting The Pacific Northwest, Miguel A. Figliozzi
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A new methodology and algorithms were developed to combine diverse data sources and to estimate the impacts of recurrent and non-recurrent congestion on freight movements’ reliability and delays, costs, and emissions. The results suggest that traditional traffic sensor data tend to underestimate the impacts of congestion on commercial vehicles travel times and variability. This research also shows that congestion is not only detrimental for carriers and shippers costs but also for the planet due to major increases in GHG emissions and for the local community due to large increases in NOx, PM, and other harmful pollutants.
The methodologies developed throughout …

Contextual Influences On Trip Generation, Kelly J. Clifton, Kristina Marie Currans, Christopher D. Muhs
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
There is national interest in building data that expands upon the existing Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) trip generation rates to include sites located in a multi-modal context. Current ITE rates represent travel behavior for development in single lots and uses, primarily measured in low-density suburban areas. Despite evidence that a more compact urban form, access to transit and a greater mix of uses generates fewer and shorter vehicle trips, local governments are often compelled to use current ITE trip generation rates to evaluate transportation impacts and calculate transportation system development charges (TSDCs). This is due to: a) the expense …
The Age Of Consequences, Matthew Murray
The Age Of Consequences, Matthew Murray
Theses
Photography has played a major role in documenting social shifts and preserving memories of people and places beyond their death. My thesis exhibit examines the loss of places that are central to our society's identity, left as abandoned husks in our midst. By creating a memorial to our own era, and eulogizing it as a time when our own actions began to have serious and long-lasting effects, we envision these sites as signifiers of the decline of America as an empire and a grim harbinger of things yet to come. While photography of modern abandonments has been derided as `ruin …
The Soulless Machine, Nathan Lomas
The Soulless Machine, Nathan Lomas
Theses
Since their creation, we have grown increasingly reliant on machines to aid us in our understanding and perceptions of the world - the camera is no exception. As an extension of the human eye, it allows us the opportunity to examine our environments from new perspectives, offering up views that we may not be able to witness on our own. Though in truth, the structure of the machine is ingrained in everything we know: from the natural world to our social patterns, actions are prescribed, parts move with united purpose, yet there is a certain comfort in the surrender of …

Twenty-Somethings In The Classroom And Counseling Office: Understanding Emerging Adult Counseling Students, Joel A. Lane
Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent trends in many counseling training programs have reflected a proliferation of students entering graduate school directly after completing an undergraduate program. This proliferation has resulted in an increase in the number of emerging adult counseling students. Emerging adulthood is the term used to describe the ages of 18-25, and is unique in that individuals in this age group identify subjectively with aspects of both adolescence and adulthood without fully identifying with either. Lacking a crystallized adult identity poses unique challenges for these students, particularly with regard to developing professional identity and self-efficacy. While many emerging adults view these challenges …

Changes in health behaviors (smoking, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and fruit and vegetable consumption) after diagnosis of chronic health conditions (heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory disease, and diabetes) were examined among Canadians aged 50 or older. Results from 12 years of longitudinal data from the Canadian National Population Health Survey indicated relatively modest changes in behavior. Although significant decreases in smoking were observed among all groups except those with respiratory disease, at least 75% of smokers did not quit. No significant changes emerged in the percentage meeting physical activity recommendations, except those with diabetes, or in excessive alcohol consumption, except …

Cities are vulnerable to a range of environmental hazards that are likely to be exacerbated by climate change: floods, droughts, poor air quality, and heat islands are a few examples. Assessments of this vulnerability often include an evaluation of a city’s adaptive capacity, or its potential to respond to changes in the frequency or severity of environmental hazards as well as its ability to take advantage of or mitigate these changes. For example, at the city (e.g., institutional) level, a common metric of adaptive capacity is the availability and effective use of information. In many cases, a city would receive …

The solar wind carves a bubble in the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM) known as the heliosphere. Charged interstellar dust grains (ISDG) encountering the heliosphere may be diverted around the heliopause or penetrate it depending on their charge-to-mass ratio. We present new calculations of trajectories of ISDG in the heliosphere, and the dust density distributions that result. We include up-to-date grain charging calculations using a realistic UV radiation field and full three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic fluid + kinetic models for the heliosphere. Models with two different (constant) polarities for the solar wind magnetic field (SWMF) are used, with the grain trajectory calculations done …

The genes encoding the cytochrome P450 2C9 enzyme (CYP2C9) and vitamin K-epoxide reductase complex unit 1 (VKORC1) are major determinants of anticoagulant response to warfarin. Together with patient demographics and clinical information, they account for approximately one-half of the warfarin dose variance in individuals of European descent. Recent prospective and randomized controlled trial data support pharmacogenetic guidance with their use in warfarin dose initiation and titration. Benefits from pharmacogenetics-guided warfarin dosing have been reported to extend beyond the period of initial dosing, with supportive data indicating benefits to at least 3 months. The genetic effects of VKORC1 and CYP2C9 in …

Experimental Tests And Numerical Analyses Of Steel Truss Bridge Gusset Connections, Christopher Higgins, Peter Dusicka, Michael Scott
TREC Final Reports
The collapse of the I-35W Bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota has raised questions regarding the performance and possibly safety of steel truss bridges. The failure investigation indicated that the collapse was due to a design error in the gusset plates used to connect the truss members. The findings also recommend that evaluation of truss connections will be needed, which is a deviation from past practice where only members were considered. Gusset plates connect individual steel truss bridge members together at a node. In 10% of the 200,000 steel bridges in US in 2008, failure of a single truss or connection could …
