Data and Test Instruments

Environews #1 is, hopefuly, the first of a series dealing with current issues of environmental concern. This issue discusses the possible role of climate change in the massive floods that followed hurricane sandy, depletion of the world's fish stocks, the possible role, bothe positive and negative, of aquaculture, and the trend to seek oil in increasingly environmentally dangerous venues.

Conformations Of Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Monomers In A Membrane Environment: Implications For Fibril Formation, Mojie Duan, Jue Fan, Shuanghong Huo Nov 2012

Conformations Of Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Monomers In A Membrane Environment: Implications For Fibril Formation, Mojie Duan, Jue Fan, Shuanghong Huo

Chemistry

The amyloid fibrils formed by islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) are associated with type II diabetes. One of the proposed mechanisms of the toxicity of IAPP is that it causes membrane damage. The fatal mutation of S20G human IAPP was reported to lead to early onset of type II diabetes and high tendency of amyloid formation in vitro. Characterizing the structural features of the S20G mutant in its monomeric state is experimentally difficult because of its unusually fast aggregation rate. Computational work complements experimental studies. We performed a series of molecular dynamics simulations of the monomeric state of human variants in …

Aplastic Anemia Post Liver Transplant Due To Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Ping Gong, Md, Jerald Z. Gong, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

Poster presented at: American society for clinical pathology (ASCP) conference 2012, Boston MA, USA.

Introduction:

The patient was a 64-year-old male presented with a 2 day history of increasing fevers and altered mental status. He underwent orthotopic liver transplant for cryptogenic cirrhosis, probably secondary to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis, 45 days before. The head and neck imaging showed pancytopenia with WBC 0.6 x 109 /L., hemoglobin 6.8 g/dl and platelet 29 x 109 /L.

Mechanism Of Action Studies On A New Class Of Anticancer Nucleosides, Megan E. Browning Nov 2012

Mechanism Of Action Studies On A New Class Of Anticancer Nucleosides, Megan E. Browning

Theses and Dissertations

We have completed mechanism of action studies on a new class of anticancer nucleosides typified by a novel nucleoside discovered in our lab, MAP-870. In order to study the mechanism of MAP-870, several experiments were completed on a colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line, HT-29, including trypan blue cell count, sulforhodamine B assays, flow cytometry of cell cycle, propidium iodide incorporation, and phosphatidylserine externalization, Caspase-Glo3/7 assays, DNA fragmentation gel, cyclophilin A release gel, PAMPA, and confocal imaging. Sulforhodamine B assays show that MAP-870 does indeed cause growth inhibition and cell death in the model tested. PAMPA assays show that MAP-870 does not …

Stimulation Of Escherichia Coli Dna Damage Inducible Dna Helicase Ding By The Single-Stranded Dna Binding Protein Ssb, Zishuo Cheng, Aimee Caillet, Binbin Ren, Huangen Ding Nov 2012

Stimulation Of Escherichia Coli Dna Damage Inducible Dna Helicase Ding By The Single-Stranded Dna Binding Protein Ssb, Zishuo Cheng, Aimee Caillet, Binbin Ren, Huangen Ding

Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli DNA damage inducible protein DinG is a superfamily II DNA helicase and is closely related to human DNA helicase XPD. Here, we report that E. coli single-stranded DNA binding protein (SSB) is able to form a stable protein complex with DinG and to stimulate the DinG DNA helicase activity. An SSB mutant that retains the single-stranded DNA binding activity but fails to form a protein complex with DinG becomes a potent inhibitor for the DinG DNA helicase, suggesting that E. coli wild-type SSB stimulates the DinG DNA helicase via specific protein-protein interaction. Structured summary of protein interactions: SSB …

Tug-Of-War In Motor Protein Ensembles Revealed With A Programmable Dna Origami Scaffold, N. D. Derr, B. S. Goodman, R. Jungmann, A. E. Leschziner, W. M. Shih, S. L. Reck-Peterson

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Cytoplasmic dynein and kinesin-1 are microtubule-based motors with opposite polarity that transport a wide variety of cargo in eukaryotic cells. Many cellular cargos demonstrate bidirectional movement due to the presence of ensembles of dynein and kinesin, but are ultimately sorted with spatial and temporal precision. To investigate the mechanisms that coordinate motor ensemble behavior, we built a programmable synthetic cargo using three-dimensional DNA origami to which varying numbers of DNA oligonucleotide-linked motors could be attached, allowing for control of motor type, number, spacing, and orientation in vitro. In ensembles of one to seven identical-polarity motors, motor number had minimal affect …

Coastal Physical Vulnerability Of Surabaya And Its Surrounding Area To Sea Level Rise, Sayidah Sulma, Eko Kusratmoko, Ratna Saraswati Nov 2012

Coastal Physical Vulnerability Of Surabaya And Its Surrounding Area To Sea Level Rise, Sayidah Sulma, Eko Kusratmoko, Ratna Saraswati

Makara Journal of Technology

The study for coastal vulnerability to sea level rise was carried out in Surabaya and its surrounding area, it has focused on calculations of the physical vulnerability index were used coastal vulnerability index (CVI) methods. It was standardized by the multi criteria analysis (MCA) approach according to the study area. The score of each physical variable derived from remote sensing satellite data and the results of studies that have been done, such as modeling results and thematic maps, and then integrated into geographic information systems (GIS). Result of this study shows that the coastal areas of Gresik, Surabaya, and Sidoarjo …

The Effect Of Size And Crumb Rubber Composition As A Filler With Compatibilizer Pp-G-Ma In Polypropylene Blends And Sir-20 Compound On Mechanical And Thermal Properties, Erna Frida Nov 2012

The Effect Of Size And Crumb Rubber Composition As A Filler With Compatibilizer Pp-G-Ma In Polypropylene Blends And Sir-20 Compound On Mechanical And Thermal Properties, Erna Frida

Makara Journal of Technology

Having been researched the development of thermoplastic elastomer material of polypropylene and natural rubber SIR- 20 compound with Crumb Rubber as the filler. Reinforced polypropylene with size 60 mesh with 1 mm, and the composition of the Crumb rubber (30, 40, and 50) wt%. Observed mechanical properties are tensile strength, fracture elongation, Young's modulus, tear strength and impact strength. Thermal properties are analyzed by DSC and DTA/TGA. It is acquired that for the size of 60 mesh crumb rubber tensile strength, fracture elongation, Young’s modulus, tear strength and impact strength are bigger than 1mm size. The addition of 60 mesh …
