Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The Arabidopsis mutant axr1 is defective in both auxin and jasmonic acid responses. A screen for axr1-24 suppressors yielded sar1-5, an allele of previously described mutants that partially correct the auxin response defects in axr1. The new allele partially suppresses defects in jasmonate response in axr1. The JA concentration required for 50% inhibition of seedling root growth was 5-10 µM for axr1-24 sar1-5. This was at least 10-fold less than that required for axr-24, but 5- to 10-fold higher than for WT. In the axr1-24 background sar1-5 also partially restored resistance to the soil fungus Pythium irregulare, a trait known …

Agricultural biomass is the world's largest, most sustainable, and most promising renewable energy source. This study investigated the potential of Karanja (Pongamia pinnata) oilseed residual waste (defatted kernel, hull, and their mixture) as a source of ethanol. The pretreatment of the finely ground samples was carried out using dilute sulfuric acid (0.5%) hydrolysis at a higher temperature of 121 °C and 15 psi pressure for 90 min. The pretreatment usually removes the lignin and facilitates the hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses. They were further hydrolyzed using 5% H_2SO_4 at 50 °C for 70 h. The analyses of hydrolyzed products have …
Liquid Sorption Properties And Structural Changes Of Metal-Organic Frameworks Of Cobalt Nitrate And 4,4'-Bipyridine, Kathryn Mauger-Sonnek
Liquid Sorption Properties And Structural Changes Of Metal-Organic Frameworks Of Cobalt Nitrate And 4,4'-Bipyridine, Kathryn Mauger-Sonnek
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Metal-organic frameworks consist of metal ions connected by organic ligands. When the metal ions and organic ligands link together in the right geometry, polymeric and infinite 1D chains or 2D and 3D networks are formed. Porous metal-organic frameworks were synthesized from the organic ligand 4,4′-bipyridine (bpy) and cobalt(II) nitrate. The metal-organic frameworks synthesized in this study grew into both a previously known 2D bilayer structure, [Co2(bpy)3(NO3)4]n, and a new, orange 1D chain structure, [Co(bpy)NO3)2(H2O)2]n, within ethanol. It was found that the presence of water was the main factor of causing formation of the orange 1D chain crystals. Drying the orange …

On May 20, 1862 Congress signed into effect the Homestead Act which provided 160 acres of surveyed government land to any citizen over the age of twenty-one and who was a head of household. One of the most historical aspects of this act was that it allowed single women the opportunity to own land. Not only were native-born women taking advantage of such a lucrative offer, but the women of Norway saw just the opening they needed to venture out on their own. They joined thousands of their countrymen across the Atlantic to find a bit of land where they …

A seroepidemiological survey of canine brucellosis was carried out in Beijing, China. Serum samples were taken from dogs admitted to the Beijing Companion Animal Hospital for immigration and emigration inspection, including dogs from 4 breeding farms and stray dogs (n = 1200, 14 districts), between January 2008 and April 2009. All of the sera were first tested and preselected by Rose Bengal plate agglutination test (RBAT), and the positive samples by RBAT were determined by tube agglutination test (TAT) again. Of the 1200 dogs studied, 60 (5%) were positive by RBAT, 21 (51.7%) of which were confirmed by TAT. The …

Thrombelastography (TEG, Haemoscope Corp., Niles, IL, USA) allows for a global evaluation of the hemostatic system; while conventional coagulation tests typically evaluate only one part of the coagulation system, TEG simultaneously examines the interaction between platelets, clotting factors, the fibrinolytic system, and clot retraction mechanisms. Since its development, TEG has been widely employed in human clinical medicine and research, but has only recently gained popularity in veterinary medicine. The purpose of this study was to establish TEG reference ranges in healthy cats using the citrated native technique. In this study, 31 clinically healthy cats were evaluated. We sampled healthy adult …

In the present work, the biocompatibility of orthodontic devices was tested by the propagation of human osteoblasts. A different methodological approach was applied. Since the materials used in human and veterinary orthodontics (not in implantology) had been tested, osteoblasts were not implanted on the surface of the biomaterial, but have been cultured in the medium containing the products of corrosion. In the present work, osteoblasts were propagated in the medium spiked with Ni(II) salt versus the control. Osteoblast cells (live, dead, and total) were counted under light microscope. The statistical significance of the differences between the experimental and control groups …

The aim of this study was to determine blood biochemical profile and selected hormone concentrations in bulls fed a diet limited in energy content. Bulls in the experimental group (I) over the 63 days prior to slaughter were provided with ration energy limited to 80% of the maintenance requirement. Animals in the control group (II) received a balanced ration. Blood samples from all of the animals were collected 3 times (A, B, C). The decrease in the ration energy level did not have a significant effect on the concentrations of glucose, total protein, total cholesterol, high-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, and the …
