Genitourinary Syndrome Of Menopause And Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms: A Primary Care Approach, Michelle Johnson
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
This literature synthesis reviewed current evidence on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM)-related lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in postmenopausal persons, with implications for primary care. GSM is a chronic, progressive condition caused by estrogen deficiency affecting vaginal, urethral, and bladder tissues. An estimated 50% to 70% of postmenopausal persons experience symptoms, including urinary urgency, frequency, incontinence, and recurrent urinary tract infections. Despite its prevalence and effect on quality of life, GSM remains substantially underdiagnosed: fewer than half of symptomatic persons seek treatment, and clinicians often fail to screen proactively. Dengue: A Global And Emerging Health Challenge, Christopher Artigas

Dengue virus, a rapidly expanding tropical arbovirus with four distinct serotypes, poses a growing global public health threat—particularly in regions where healthcare systems are ill-equipped to diagnose, treat, and manage its severe manifestations. Transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, dengue typically manifests as an acute febrile illness characterized by severe myalgias ("bone-breaking fever"), arthralgias, gastrointestinal distress, and hemorrhagic tendencies. In severe cases, the infection can progress to life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS). Because definitive antiviral therapeutics remain in development, supportive clinical care, with a critical focus on timely intravenous fluid resuscitation, is the cornerstone of management. …

Continuity Beyond Delivery: A Family Medicine Approach To Racial And Ethnic Equity In Postpartum Care, Dominique J. Tarrant
Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science
This narrative review examines interventions to improve postpartum care continuity, reduce disparities, and advance maternal health equity, emphasizing structured follow-up, care coordination, and family medicine integration. The postpartum period, often called the “fourth trimester,” should connect recovery with lifelong health. However, many women, particularly those from racially and ethnically minoritized populations, encounter missed screenings, inadequate support, and structural barriers that increase their risk of adverse maternal outcomes. Electronic searches of PubMed and Google Scholar were conducted from October 27 through November 7, 2025, using combinations of “postpartum care,” “family medicine integration,” “racial and ethnic disparities,” “health equity,” and “fourth trimester.” …

Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is an increasingly common orthopedic procedure, yet postoperative pain management continues to rely heavily on opioid analgesics. Although multimodal analgesia (MMA) has become the standard of care in total hip and knee arthroplasty, consensus regarding the optimal multimodal approach for TSA remains limited. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Following screening with inclusion and exclusion criteria, 42 articles were selected for review and synthesized. Current evidence supports MMA pathways incorporating regional anesthesia, non-opioid pharmacologic agents, perioperative corticosteroids, cryotherapy, and patient education to reduce postoperative opioid requirements without …

The purpose of this paper is to synthesize current evidence on sedation minimization, early mobility, and multicomponent care bundles for the prevention of intensive care unit (ICU) delirium in critically ill adults. ICU delirium is a common and serious complication associated with increased mortality, prolonged mechanical ventilation, extended ICU and hospital length of stay, and long-term cognitive impairment, making it a significant safety and quality-of-care concern. This talk introduces some basic concepts in several complex variables and explains the role of pseudo convexity through two fundamental topics: Hartog’s' extension phenomenon and the Levi problem. A stronger property than pseudo convexity is the existence of a plurisubharmonic defining function. Such defining functions play an important role in the study of analytic objects associated with a domain, including the regularity of the d-bar Neumann operator and the Bergman projection. The main question of this talk is whether a pseudo convex domain admits a plurisubharmonic defining function. We approach this question in two steps. First, we establish a necessary …

Recent Case: Executive Power - The Supreme Court Relies On Historical Context To Protect The Federal Reserve's Independence In Trump V. Cook, Charles Britton

The Supreme Court in Trump v Cook carved out an exception for the Federal Reserve Bank to the unfettered right of the president to terminate administrative employees at will, a right it established the same day in Trump v. Slaughter. Rather than entirely eliminating the need for “cause,” the Court maintained the requirement in the bank context and defined it as something more than just a reason to dispose of a political adversary. The Court relied on historical and traditional support for insulating the Federal Reserve and pragmatism to protect against national economic turmoil. This Note explains how the …

This Recent Case Note analyzes the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in West Virginia v. B.P.J. (2026) in which the Court upheld state laws banning transgender women and girls from competing on women’s and girls’ sports teams. By holding that the state bans were justified by concerns with physical safety and fair competition, the Court rejected a claim that the bans violated the Equal Protection Clause and applied an arguably less demanding heightened scrutiny standard than its prior cases seemingly required. This short story narrates the lived experience of a young, rural, Tunisian student confronting the intersecting oppressions of class, gender, and regional marginalization in her pursuit of higher education. Positioned as an arbiya—a term loaded with regionalist and classist disdain—the protagonist is marked as inferior within the urban academic milieu. Her daily struggles with poverty, hunger, and moral scrutiny reveal the precarious conditions under which many women students from rural backgrounds must survive. The dormitory space, far from being a refuge, exposes her to exploitation, judgment, and social surveillance. The story reaches its emotional apex when her lover’s urban bourgeois …

Affirmative Action For Women In Higher Education And Stem: A Policy Framework To Transform India’S Scientific Landscape, Dileep Verma, Pushpender Yadav, Shashikant Nishant Sharma

This brief proposes an outcomes-oriented affirmative-action framework to accelerate women’s participation and leadership across India’s higher education and STEM pipeline, aligning national priorities for a “Self-reliant India” (Atmanirbhar Bharat) with the United Nation’s SDG-5 (gender equality). Near-parity in overall HE enrolment contrasts with women’s underrepresentation in engineering/technology programmes, research roles, and senior faculty positions as revealed by the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) (Department of Science & Technology, n.d.-a; Ministry of Education, 2020; Sahay, 2022). Towards Equitable Protection: The Legal And Societal Invisibility Of Unmarried Relationships And Dating Violence In India, Annet Shaju, Aditi Padiyar
Journal of International Women's Studies
In India, unmarried romantic relationships, and especially cohabitation, are cultural taboos for which women unequivocally bear the brunt of societal stigma and moral scrutiny. Although India’s Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDV) explicitly includes women in unmarried relationships, deeply entrenched socio-cultural bias permeates institutional mechanisms, impeding support, legal assistance, and protection for unmarried women. The 2025 state mandate to register unmarried relationships involving cohabitation signals a shift towards increased moral policing and infringement of privacy and autonomy. Such repressive rules risk being counterproductive; there is a need for regulations that prioritize women’s empowerment and broader societal changes …

This narrative poem explores the embodied experience of childbirth in a foreign land. Set within the unfamiliar environment of a hospital far from the speaker’s linguistic roots, the poem traces the physical and emotional landscape of labor as one profoundly shaped by displacement and disconnection. Through sensory imagery and fragmented memory, it portrays how giving birth in an unfamiliar context amid the absence of familiar support systems and linguistic comfort creates a profound sense of bodily estrangement. Gender-Based Violence, Legal Protection, And Intersecting Narratives: A Conversation With Flavia Agnes, Barnana Baidya, Partha Bhattacharjee
Journal of International Women's Studies
Flavia Agnes is a leading advocate for gender justice because of her legal expertise in marital law, divorce, and property law and her activism as an Indian women’s rights lawyer. Her scholarly work on systemic and legal gender-based oppression has appeared in the journals Subaltern Studies, Economic and Political Weekly, and Manushi. Her book, My Story...Our Story of Rebuilding Broken Lives, released by her non-profit organization named Majlis, depicts how Agnes battled domestic violence while addressing the law’s restrictive abilities to offer protection.
