Harry Harlow’S Nature Of Love (1958), Jonathan B. Santo Apr 2025

Harry Harlow’S Nature Of Love (1958), Jonathan B. Santo

Essays in Developmental Psychology

In Harold Harlow’s 1958 address of the American Psychological Association, he hoped to tackle a concept he felt was too often avoided by the psychologists of his time, the nature of love. His work on the behavior of macaques when reared without their mothers makes a compelling argument about the limits of viewing psychology (and by extension development) as simply the reduction of “primary drives” like hunger, thirst and avoidance of pain.

Fictional Failures And Real-World Lessons: Ethical Speculation Through Design Fiction On Emotional Support Conversational Ai, Fayle Kollig, Jessica Pater, Fayika Farhat Nova, Casey Fiesler

Health Services and Informatics Research

Conversational artificial intelligence (CAI), which replicates human-to-human interaction as human-to-machine, is increasingly developed to address insufficient access to healthcare. In this paper, we use design fiction methods to speculate on ethical consequences of CAI that offers emotional support to complement or replace mental healthcare. Through a near-future news article about a fictional, failed CAI, we explore safety and privacy concerns associated with mismatches between what an emotional support CAI is advertised to do, what it technically can do, and how it is likely to be used. We pose the following questions to researchers, regulators, and developers: How might we jointly …

“I Don’T Tend That Part Of My Garden”: The Self-Archiving Practices Of Arts And Humanities Scholars, Lindsey Skaggs, Colby Cilento, Rachel Scott

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In this session, we will report on interviews conducted with scholars in the arts and humanities that explored participants’ approaches to open access publishing, self-archiving, and dissemination of research and creative work, focusing on their engagement with institutional repositories (IR). While depositing activities ranged considerably among participants, most expressed confusion about copyright and had little motivation for navigating “clunky” IR systems. We will share scholars’ considerations, frustrations, and misconceptions about self-archiving their work in IRs, how it compares to their dissemination practices in disciplinary repositories and academic social networks (ASN), and what librarians can take away from their experiences to …

Frequent Failure Of Nutrients To Increase Plant Biomass Supports The Need For Precision Fertilization In Agriculture, Oliver H. Carroll, Eric W. Seabloom, Elizabeth T. Borer, W. Stanley Harpole, Peter Wilfahrt, Carlos A. Arnillas, Erika Hersh-Green, Et. Al.

Michigan Tech Publications

Implementing precision fertilization to maximize crop yield while minimizing economic and environmental impacts has become critical for agriculture. Variability in biomass response to fertilization within fields, among regions, and over time creates simultaneous risks of under-yielding and overfertilization. We quantify factors determining fertilization responsiveness (i.e., biomass increases with fertilization) up to 15 years in 61 unfertilized rangelands on six continents. We demonstrate widespread multi-year variability in responsiveness, with fertilization increasing average yield by 43% but failing to improve biomass 26% of the time. All sites were responsive at least once, but only four of 61 responded in all plots and …

Intelligence In Adulthood, Shehroo B. Pudumjee, Nathan C. Weed Apr 2025

Intelligence In Adulthood, Shehroo B. Pudumjee, Nathan C. Weed

Essays in Developmental Psychology

The construct of intelligence has been extensively debated and ascribed many definitions. A typical example, provided by David Wechsler, defines intelligence as “the aggregate or global capacity of the individual to act purposefully, to think rationally, and to deal effectively with [one’s] environment.” While most intelligence theorists agree upon the existence of a “general intelligence” (often symbolized g), and agree upon the existence of narrower abilities, there is a great deal of disagreement about the nature and number of the narrower abilities. For example, Cattell proposed a model including crystallized intelligence, the ability to employ acquired skills and knowledge, and …

Love (Components), Zahra Sattaur, Lisa K. Lashley, Charles J. Golden

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Several theories have emerged over the years to explain love. These theories have emerged in order to understand the nature of one’s experience of love in daily life. The two dominating theories on love are those proposed by John Alan Lee and Robert Sternberg. Lee’s model suggested a model which includes six styles of love, three which are primary, and three that are considered secondary. The primary styles of love are Eros or passionate love, Ludus or game-playing love, and Storge which is friendship-based love. The secondary styles of love are Pragma or practical love, Mania which is possessive love, …

Infant Speech Perception And Babbling, Brian Schanding

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Much work in the study of early life speech perception centers on an infant’s ability to discriminate sounds. Studies rely on an infant’s reactions to spoken language, measured by various physical and biometric responses, as evidence of an infant’s ability to perceive distinct spoken sounds. Studies have identified a number of characteristics of human speech, termed cues, which infants have demonstrated they can recognize.

Charles Darwin, Michaela J. Santo, Jonathan B. Santo

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Charles Robert Darwin was born February 12th, 1809 in Shropshire England, the fifth child of six to Robert and Susannah Darwin. Although Darwin is best known for his work as a naturalist, he had an early interest in medicine working with his father treating the poor in the village of his birth. Though he enrolled in medical school, he found the study of taxidermy more engaging than his medical studies. His interest soon shifted towards natural history, to the cataloging of beetles and eventually geology. He subsequently dropped the pursuit of medicine to finishing his coursework to become an Anglican …

Parenting Dimensions, Pamela C. Sheffler, Ceclia S. Cheung Apr 2025

Parenting Dimensions, Pamela C. Sheffler, Ceclia S. Cheung

Essays in Developmental Psychology

Parenting is the process of supporting the development of a child from infancy through adulthood. This support encompasses not only the child’s physical development, but his or her social, emotional, and financial development as well. Although children are most often raised by their biological parents, parenting refers to a process that is separate from its biological definition. Thus, siblings, grandparents, and legal guardians may also parent. For example, in the Kipsigis community of Kenya, after a child reaches the age of two it is common practice for older siblings to take on the role of parent while the mother is …
